NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Big Ten Breakdown

The Monkey does a quick breakdown of the Big Ten or Eleven or whatever they are as they open league play.

Northwestern (4-0) at Minnesota (1-3): The Gophers have a beautiful stadium. There, I said something nice about Tim Brewster's squad. Northwestern wins this one 38-12. How long does Fitzpatrick stay in Evanston?

Wisconsin (4-0) at Michigan St. (4-0): Wisconsin too big, too strong for Sparty. MSU does get their coach back and that could provide a lift early, but that fades quickly as the Badgers go big time smash mouth on 'em. Wisky takes it 34-14

Penn St (3-1) at Iowa (3-1): Captain Kirk owns JoPa. Look it up if you don't believe me. Iowa 27-10

Michigan (4-0) at Indiana (3-0): Sure to be entertaining, it all comes down to which team can play at least one series of defense. The Monkey says Meatchicken prevails 105-103.

Ohio St. (4-0) at Illinois (2-1): Being a Buckeye fan, The Monkey rarely speaks of the Bucks unless asked. Tries to keep it as unbiased as possible. All he can say for this game is Illinois starts a redshirt freshman at QB.

Last but not least....Purdue does not lose this weekend. GUARANTEED.

I once used the pejorative Meatchicken as a substitute for M*ch*g*n and got railed by veteran poster over the course of two or three days of angry posts (by both him and me). Here's hoping that doesn't happen with you.

I think Pat stays with Northwestern for awhile. It's his alma mater, he is loyal to it for obvious reasons. The school and the atmosphere are both very cool (I grew up in Evanston). Because they are not perennial champions and their standards increase the degree of difficulty with recruiting high level skill positions players, their victories are so much sweeter every time they earn the win; all part of the culture there. I think he stays.

Although, I'm picturing a scenario where Harbaugh gets offered M*ch*g*n and Fitz gets Stanford; just a crazy thought.

Breaking it down for the opening week is nice. I enjoyed your comments.

I'd be interested to hear what everyone thinks of the Big11Ten race as a whole. Wolverines starting strong. Will they maintain? It feels like they can. Not sure how their speed plays against the muscle of Wisky, Iowa and the Buckeyes. It'll be fun to see how that plays out.

Iowa's early season, tough loss to AZ; does that better galvanize them for a serious run over Wisky and tOSU?

And several other compelling dark horse scenarios could pan out as well.

It's still the Buckeyes championship to lose, at this point. And, after witnessing Tressel's new stance on running a score up as practice getting in the endzone (10 TD's in one game), I believe the Bucks are out for blood; vindication by way of a solo Big11Ten championship and a victorious fourth trip to the BCS NCG in the last 9 seasons. I'd love to see them come away 2-2 in NCG's.

That might stifle some of the lingering Buckeye PR problems nationally (especially if it is Alabama we need to beat to earn the championship).

Total Buckeye homer...I know.

Yeah, interesting that he hangs 73 on a nobody and takes a knee to keep the margin at 12 against Miami. I wonder if the Michigan ties had anything to do with it?

If Meatchicken angers anybody, I might consider not using it, but I only do so with the utmost respect. The Big House is still my favorite place to have seen a game.

Not sure that was the determining factor. He kept the 1's in on offense for longer than I expected, but the last several scores were by non-starters. Guiton, Berry, Hall, etc were 3rd (and 4th) string players.

Although they were from Up North and the Coach came from tSUN could have had something to do with it.

September 28, 2010  01:25 PM ET

well, that is true and they were the subs, but he knew...he knew...and remember Ron English was brought in as the stopper for UM to get over that hump against tOSU with his zone defense schemes and all that junk...

I had a fella call me out on my blog site about the Wisky/Sparty game. He says MSU takes it. Anybody else think Sparty wins this one?

I actually do think Sparty gets this one...

Fitzgerald is the face of Northwestern. He has molded that team into his own. Not that different of the teams he played for in the mid 90's. Having met him and talking with him I understand his committment to NU and his desire to make his team competitive week in and week out. He is a great person and a damn good coach.

He has done well enough that I rarely use "pretty good, for Northwestern" when talking about the teams accomplishments. I believe he stays at NU for as long as he coaches, but I wonder if he ever gets the itch to move on to a title contender. He turns 36 in December. Still a baby as far as coaches go.

I along with every Buckeye fan have been waiting for Tressel to unleash his offense without remorse for sometime. I hope this wasn't a one time thing and he should destroy every Big Ten opponent scoring as often as possible. Can't help thinking Denard Robinson had something to do with unleashing Pryor on an all out offensive assault.

I think part of the reason the score got to be what it was was due to the fact the EMU guys were going for Pryor's legs, and especially the hit put on Corey Brown on the punt.

I did not watch the game the EMU vs Ohio State but:

Why would a tackler not go for Pryor's legs? 6'6" with a great stiff arm and plenty of speed means only one chance to tackle him. The best chance to tackle Pryor is low tackles.

Going low for a tackle..and going low for someone's knee two different things...

I believe the hit referred to here is the one that came on a touchdown pass early in the game (made it 14-0, I believe. So, like 30 seconds in). Pryor was hit at the knees in the pocket just after he had released the ball.

Defender had released from the O-line and had an unrestricted run straight forward into Pryor's face. Pryor stepped in and made the throw while the rusher appears to have made a conscious choice to dive low instead of sticking his helmet into Terelle's chest. Rusher may have just fallen forward into a pseudo dive from the momentum of being released by offensive lineman. Tough to tell for sure. That's football for you.

It's close enough that the whole of ESPN and every other pundit around the country would be absolutely railing the kid from EMU as useless and dirty had he ended Pryor's season (or career) with a severe knee injury. We'd all be talking about the BS of a heisman possible losing the year (possibly more) while tOSU toys with EMU (an insignificant game) instead of a playing more worthy opponent (another team out of big 6 conferences AQ). I'm reminded of getting our heads crushed by USC a few years back right after losing Beanie Wells to injury in an early "scrimmage" game aginst Troy or Kent State or something.

But, these games serve their purpose as full speed action meant to sharpen and ready the team for conference play. So, you just play 'em and try to stay as healthy as possible. That's football for you.

As for the shot on Corey Brown...I missed it and haven't seen a replay.

September 29, 2010  09:42 AM ET

Okay, I looked at the replay again. Rusher was basically let go by Adams (who was supposed to be a stud LT, but has really never materialized).

One second, Adams is blocking him...the next he just takes an inside move and Mike stands still, watching him go by unimpeded into Terelle's legs.

I stand corrected...ESPN would be railing BOTH the EMU kid and Mike Adams non stop. I'd be interested to see how Adams graded out for his performance in the EMU game. Not a week ago I saw no less than two stories dedicated to how Adams has finally turned the corner; about how he is becoming the stud he was recruited to be. Imagine how Adams must have felt in that moment watching Pryor go down oddly on the hit to his knees.

Hopefully, it becomes a teaching memory for him. He's starting to feel like a repeat of Alex Boone; looks like the prototype, dominating LT, but never plays like it. Let's see how Illinois game pans out. Maybe he improves to an every down player.

I could handle a 105-103 game
