I played in and watched soccer games ever since I was in first grade. I have notice when it comes to who are the best players, it is all about the offence. I can remember playing socore as a youth and a team I was on won all the games. When the trophies were handed out the coach gave out reasons for most of the players getting trophies, like best player, most improved player or some short story of him remembering a player play soccer. When it came to me, the player that was always fullback and never let a single ball pass or let a goal attempt to be made on my side of the field, the coach not did not say anything about my playing abilities or skills. Usually in my years of playing soccer everyone got a trophy just for playing. In this case it seemed that is the only reason I got one. I played fullback untill my 5th year of soccer playing when I played other to play position as well as fullback. During my 5 years of playing soccer I never had a player get an oppertunity to score let alone get the ball pass me, but they tried. Durning my days of playing soccer the only weekness in defensive the teams I played on was the other player(s) playing fullback (they let the opposing team score on them) but there was never a season when I played soccer that a non scoring player was called a great player. So I ask, is scoring all we care about in soccer or does playing deffense matter?
