NFL  > Oakland Raiders  > Raiders Fans Forgot Or Just Don't Know the Legend Of Their Franchise
October 4, 2010, 01:28 PM
I guess the phrase that best applies to Raider founder/owner/gm/coach Al Davis of the struggling Oakland Raiders is "what have you done for me lately"? The young Raiders fans really should pick up a book and read about this incredible football guy. The fans who are old enough to have seen him in his glory years wonder why he can't turn this franchise around?
The Raiders came into the league with the Dallas Cowboys in 1960. It was Al Davis who coached the Raiders to their first winning campaign in just their fourth season. Davis coached the Raiders to their first winning season in 1963. He was coach for three years compiling a record of 23-16-1 .590. In 1966 he gained full control of Raider operations as owner and gm similiar to Jerry Jones. Obviously Davis was a success aside from being a coach to be able to purchase the Raiders. Al's Raiders ran neck to neck with the NFL powers like Pittsburgh, Dallas and San Franciscos of the following 40 years. His Raiders were winners in 28 of 43 years. Davis was 381-252-11 in those seasons. An incredible 129 games over .500. He walked off the field with his team admiring a Super Bowl trophy on three occasions. 1976* 1980* 1983*. His Raiders were playoff warriors 21 seasons with a record of 25-18 in cold January epic games. His slogans were "Just Win Baby!" and "Commitment to Excellence". His Raiders were a highlight reel of success.
However his epic franchise has fallen on hard times. After being the favorites to win
the Super Bowl following the 2002 season his Raiders were routed by the
Buccaneers in the biggest game. It was a shocking loss that has sent his Raiders into turmoil. It was as if the "Raiders' Mystique" was lost in the defeat? Davis has suffered seven straight seasons of 11 or more defeats. So used to setting records of greatness with so many great players and teams for years his Raiders are the only
team to suffer such a spell of losing. This season being Al Davis' 51st season his Raiders stand at 1-3 .250 once again showing no hopes of recovery. Way too close to their winning pct. in the last seven years. Now he is the object of scorn among the young fans who don't know the Al Davis that was. The fallen Raiders are an abysmal 30- 86 .256 since 03.
I recently saw Al Davis in a picture and he looks like a troubled man. He has given his life to the Raiders and anyone with a heart hopes Al Davis turns his team around to the glory years of the past.

86 .256.

This is a post I posted over a year ago, pretty much spells out the last 40 plus years.

1966 thry 1985 one the best teams ever, the numbers are staggering, but that was 23 years ago.

Last 23
11 Losing seasons
8 seasons with more than 10 losses, current streak of 6 (*11 loss Seasons) League record
5 (8-8) seasons
2 (9-7) seasons
*(Detroit Lions have 2 more wins in the last 6 seasons)

That is 16 out of 23 seasons they failed to win more than they lost. Add (2) mediocre 9-7 years and that is 18 out of 23 they were lame to say the least.

No playoffs in those 18 seasons.

5 seasons with 10 win or more (5 good seasons in 23 that's about 1 good season for every 5 bad seasons).

Playoff Games last 23 Years; 12, that's right 12 which is more than a few teams

Playoff Wins: 6
Playoff Losses: 6

3- AFC Championship games (in 2 they only managed a field goal, you spend the entire season trying to get to this game and all you put up is a field goal)

Lost to Buffalo 51-3*
Lost to Baltimore 16-3 in Oakland
Won against Tenn. 41-21

*Howie Long later said he knew they lost the day before the game because of the cold weather.

The only Superbowl they were they were losing by 31 points in the 3rd quarter, eventally losing by 28.

When Al Davis says they will get back to winning ways, he can't possibly think the last 23 years were winning.

Nice trip down memory lane. Been there all those years, done all that. What you also have to understand is that managing a franchise is a younger man's chore; no one can run it alone and certainly not someone Al's age. When we did have success we had a competent GM - it's sorely missing now.

I do feel for the younger fans who never had a chance to see/experience the Raiders of old because those characters were a wonder to behold.

But why has he lost his ability to judge talent? Bey is an awful receiver? Wasn't Crabtree there? Crabtree is struggling a bit now too but he was a better talent in college then Bey? A guy who is a brilliant football guy struggling like this? This man coached for three years? Hes probably one of the smartest football guys around? Shocking. McClain looks like a player but Russell was awful. Lets hope he gets it together. I feel for the guy. Hes got it in him.

Yeah the days of the Snake, Kick'em, Branch, Biletnikoff, LaMonica, Upshaw, Otto, Old man Willie Brown, van Eeghen, Banaszak, Villapiano, Plunkett, Allen, Alzado (once a Bronco but will allows be remembered as a Raider) Lester the Molester I could go on and on.
The down fall started with Marc Wilson, Gruden stopped the slide but 'go long' Al would have none of the dink and dunk stuff.

Buddy! you remember the games! The 70s those cold winter weekends with the Raiders, Vikings, Steelers, Rams and the Dolphins there every year? Epic games! The Raiders with the Stabler td pass against the Dolphins with defenders climbing him, the " Immaculant Reception" by the Steelers, the Hail Mary, the td when Casper kept pushing the ball forward to finally recover it for a td? That causing a rule change? Those were the days! So many great games! lol
Yea Davis needs to get someone to help him. Obviously he doesn't have a son? Luckily Jerry Jones has a couple to help him. Gotta feel for the guy.

People started calling him a "football genius" back in 1985 after they won 3 SB's in 7 years. It went to his head and he became an egotistical tyrant and still is to this day, everyone in the organization does not argue anything or they are unemployed.

He got into that spat with Kiffen and stuck by JaMarcus and no one had the kahoonies to tell him he that JaMarcus stunk, Kiffen did not want to draft him.
The players are just there for a paycheck, until they retire him the franchise is doomed.

Yea but through the hate this guy deserves the utmost respect. Hes a guy I'd love to sit down with and hear some stories about his Raiders in their great years. I'd be in paradise.

Wow sorry to hear you say that. I'd lean towards what another poster said, hes gotten older. Many Cowboys fans dislike Jones but I can't forget the three rings. I certainly don't compare Jones to Davis in terms of winning seasons but he plays a owner/gm role as well. Maybe a spell like the Raiders and I will change my mind. Davis seems to have sputtered since his "Just Win Baby" statement after the 83 SB win? Wonder if that just put a bigger target on his back showing arrogance.

Yeah like a said, nice trip down memory lane (not named kiffin). Tons of great games, players on both sides of the balls - Old Man Willie is why I wear #24. Al's son Mark Davis doesn't have any football related interest that's been made public; I can't remember the last time I saw a picture of the guy.

Someone asked me the other day who would take over when Al passes, my response was: Al Davis is protected from up high by the Dark Lord himself but should he get the call to come home, the paperwork left behind is SO convoluted the organization could be in court for 20 yrs sorting it all out. Probably the way Al would want it to be.

October 4, 2010  04:00 PM ET

I miss the old Raiders. They were such a rough, smash mouth football team. I love the fans and the black hole and I love the tradition and I wish they would get back to that.

October 4, 2010  04:01 PM ET

Raider fans haven't forgotten. We've just come to the conclusion that Davis needs to release the reigns and get a qualified GM with knowledge of today's NFL. The power is shifting, but it's a little slow for some fans. It's been a loooong 7 years already.

Oh. My. God.

Please don't let that happen.

I don't believe the crazy outfits were around in the great years. They are a bit much. lol How about shelving the leather iron and let them start kicking butt on the field again? Yea thats it!

Well crap. I already take a liking to scotch. What's the big boy uppance from there?!? Ugh.

That is all true. I am old enough to know the history of the RAIDERS and their glory years. Believe me they were great. My question is this. Is firing Tom Cable or as I learned tonight the releasing, basically, of 21 the answer? NO it is not.

January 9, 2011  11:23 PM ET

I am a long time RAIDERS fan. Believe me I have seen and endured a lot over the past few years. All those losing seasons, god that hurts. Just when I thought we were headed in the right direction, the road to glory, here goes Al again. Firing Tom Cable. Now I hear he voided the contract of in my opinion the best CB in the league, Number 21. Just when we start to turn things around he tears them apart.
