NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > ...and this is why Dallas needs new coaches
October 10, 2010, 05:15 PM
Phillips was known for his defensive coaching. Well, one needs look no further than the horrid defensive penalties. Phillips has instilled NO discipline.

The offense is single dimension. Austin Miles. If he gets injured, their offense is dead in the water. Occasionally, another player will get a call (and maybe even make a catch.) Garrett's play calling has not successfully spread out the ball or even stumped many defenses.

Some continue to think that Dallas is going to pull the hat trick and actually pull out a Super Bowl appearance this year. It's not going to happen. The coaching staff needs to be replaced. Now. The year is over.

---

Then again, maybe what Dallas really needs is an owner who stays out of the coaching business.

I'd be very happy if they lose right now....lol

i think the season is over for dallas.... and after only 4 games. but, this team is not tough mentally. they have no real leader to "call on" or look to when the game is on the line. romo is ok... not great, but ok. he makes some impressive throws and then follows them up with poor ones. 3 INTs today. no chance JJ stays out of his team's decisions, but he could hire a real coach that can lead, motivate and provide direction - something we been missing for a long time.

They came out flat. Again. Against a dangerous team.

There is no sense of urgency with these guys.

October 10, 2010  08:44 PM ET

Sadly, I agree with the previous two postings. There is no real leader and there is no sense of urgency. I think both of these can be attributed to a lack of leadership from the coaching staff. Throughout the game, all camera cuts to Phillips showed no emotion. I'm not comparing these stone face expressions to that of our esteemed coach, the great Tom Landry. No, Phillips facial expressions showed a lack of caring what was happening on the field.

I don't think any excuses can explain away what is happening with our team. This season is over. It's time to begin cleaning up this mess and trying to position this team for next season.

What he said...and the next two posts as well.

Coaches need to step up....

Hello Ripper, I'm on the east coast but what say we meet in the middle of the country and beat one another senseless with foam-wiffle bats, maybe we'll feel better!

I submit you're wrong about "...quitting your team...". Garrett took over the offense four years ago. How many times in the past four years have the Cowboys won in the playoffs? Over the time Phillips has been head coach, in contrast, how many plain dumb penalties have the Cowboys committed?

Seriously. I've been a Cowboy fan since I was a kid (I'm 44 now). I've been through the highs and lows. The single point of failure "now" is the coaching. No discipline. No good offensive play calling. No accountability demanded by the coaching staff.

If you've been watching the Cowboys, what is your analysis and how do you see the Cowboys turn this season around?

Don't think that will happen... Jerry Jones seed will be in full control for 100 years!!!

This BS about "being in the SB in their home stadium" is just that.......BS. Just another distraction amongst many, created by the owner, he of the "even bad publicity is good for the Cowboys". The coaches need to go, especially Wade and the RHG, Garrett. With next year uncertain, Jones wants his SB win this year, but it appears it's not going to happen.

But, as long as Jones is alive and well, I don't expect anything other than him being a puppet master. The problems start at the top. This team has a lot of talent but it's being wasted. After 20 years, you'd think he'd would learn something.

I've been a fan of the Cowboys since I was a kid......probably 45 years. Or since Meredith was the QB. Since Jones has been the owner, he got his 3 SB's early, and then he's lost his mind. Until he lets his coaches do their thing as happened with Jimmy Johnson, then I doubt Jones will see another trophy.

I never have understood that concept. If the NFL didn't share merchandise revenues and cap salaries it might make sense. But television ratings don't equal on field success.

The NFC East is a mess right now. So it's tough to say ant team is out of the picture. But Wade Phillips isn't the man for a postseason run.

October 11, 2010  07:18 AM ET

I know a lot of guys are pointing at the penalties. And that's a showing of poor discipline, which falls back on the coaching staff, so I won't disagree.

But here's the thing that caught my attention yesterday...

Dallas was
1. Coming off a bye week
2. Playing at home
3. Down 3-17 early.

The Cowboys should have been better prepared walking into that game. Dallas would have won this game if they had entered with a better game plan. That goes on the coaching staff.

+40, you're on...it's safer than slitting wrists or stringing myself up on the shower head, too. Some guys are just not born or learned winners. I see Wade that way. Better off as a role player, like a D coordinator. And re Norv, I've been on the fence...I thought he was a loser when he was hired, and then he had some success and I started giving him a chance... but then, slowly I watched him lose important games, usually for weird reasons. You can try to rationalize those L's and explain them away to bad luck, but they all boil down to lack of execution somewhere....not always the same place, but always somewhere. Maybe when they win, it's despite having Norv, as opposed to because of him. I dunno. Seems like the same BS....every year listening to Berman explaining how talented they are, but but but.... but they can't consistently execute and win. Winners win. Losers find ways to lose. Doesn't matter how. It will always be SOMETHING. Well, Norv's getting creative this season. What next? Maybe pick up a fumble and run the wrong way with it? Hook and ladder ala Dolphins? Statue of Liberty? hahaha. Let's see, +40....where exacyly is the middle of the country? I'm sitting pretty close to dead center California right now....so maybe Topeka, Kansas? Where in the heck is THAT? I'll get my wiffle bat out. We used to have some hella wiffleball games back in the day.

Ripper, mind if I take your post and replace "norv" with "wade" and vice versa....? Works for either team. IT is about execution and attention to detail.

I laugh b/c last ten days all the practices at Valley Ranch....have been "crisp"! WTF does that mean when you come out and have 16 penalties! And I don't blame Colombo for the loss BTW--stupid penalty call by the No Fun League.
