My team has played in some great games down the years, but I still consider the '71 OU-Neb matchup the best game ever. That said, we just have to move on when all the traditions you mentioned die off (or are killed).
Traditions speak to the past while budgets speak to the future. A team changes conferences because bean counters convince the AD the extra revenue could budget a lacrosse team, or finance a new baseball stadium. Even if they kill off the BCS, I don't think that will change whether we go back to the old way or go forward to a playoff. Darwin had a theory for all these changes, and if he was right, there'll be no going back to the good 'ol days.
IMHO NEB fans were probably better off in the Big 8. The school gets a lot more money now, but the games people grew up with are gone. In particular I grew up in Murray, NEB for a few years and every year from 5th to 7th grade I loved watching the OU/NEB game.
New traditions will be good in the B10, but you have to wonder how long the conference that can't count will stay at 12 and NEB fans will then get an even newer set of traditions.....
i grew up in Texas and New Mexico...and my team has always been Oklahoma. I too remember the great OU/Neb, TU/Ark games...those were some doozies. Hated it when Ark went to the SEC, but glad now.. :)
Agree Huskertom.
IMO money is sucking the life out of CFB.
Game tickets are outrageous. Apparel is sky high. The TV money is ridiculous. We used to have a TV station we could rely on 24 hours a day for sports reporting and information (ESPN) -- but now it's impossible for them to be objective because of the money they've committed.
The OU/Neb rivalry is gone. TX/Arkansas rivalry is gone. Penn State/Pitt rivalry is gone. Man, I miss those games.
I miss the old New Year's Day bowls played for all the marbles. I miss the Gator Bowl, the Independence Bowl and the Citrus Bowl too. The Meineke Car Care Bowl? Where is that? Does anyone care? The Cotton Bowl used to be a New year's Day bowl now it's a 2nd tier bowl played on a Thursday in November or something.
I will miss Nebraska and Colorado in the Big 12.
Like TtT says...71 Okla-Neb...may have been greatest game every played...that I watched anyway
Watched the 69 Ark-Texas...Game of the Century while onboard a naval ship in 69.
Grea memories. Like Dr. B-f-G says, money has changed so much and I miss the past with all the New Years Day bowls.
I'm sort of an old guy, and like most old guys I wish for things past and am not as fond and somewhat jaded about the way things are in most sports these days. Mythical national champions were fine by me.
I still like college football the best and I do feel some attachment to the past. But so much has changed.
The past, the older one gets, looks brighter and brighter, while the future looks darker and darker. This is a result of perception and really no indicator of things getting "worse" per se. New generations watching the game today do not remember the things you guys do. To them, this is the status quo. When they get to be your age, I'm sure they will pine for the past the same way. It is the way of things. Don't think too much about it. Focus on the present.
Trust me, I'm a Notre Dame fan. We know ALL ABOUT pining for the old days.
Dr B-F-G, the Gator Bowl still exists, but it has a different name; as does the Citrus Bowl. The Meineke Car Care Bowl has a new sponsor. A lot of bowls have changed names and moved around. There's a website that tracks which bowls used to have a different moniker and which were created out of the blue recently. I forget the name, but if you Google: "College Football Bowl Games" you might find it.
I will say that while I miss the days of the Big 8 and SWC, OU/Neb and TU/Arky, I have never been more involved in CFB than I am now.
Of course a lot of that can be blamed on my getting on this website and meeting all of you....at least that is how my wife sees it. LOL

I'll give you a fist bump but Norka probably wants a hug.
I look at it this way, when Penn St came to the Big10 it was different, but now the tOSU/PSu game is a great rivalry game, and speaking from a competitive stand point has been better than the UM rivalry game.
Nebraska may lose some great old rivalry games, but maybe 10-15 years down the road we will be talking the annual slug fest between Ohio State/Nebraska or Penn St/Nebraska...
Sometimes change can be painful and unwanted, but in the end it works out better than before...

We don't need clear, sensible reasoning here....we need passionate, one-sided empathy!!!!!

Not a husker fan myself but I would imagine the big difference here is frequency. PSU shifted once. NEB went from B8 to B12 to B10 and might have to shift divisions with a few years in the B10 if they expand to 16. There may be a certain sense of being adrift for some fans.

...then have you for dinner, and not as a guest.....hi Norka!

Yep - great rivalries have come and gone and new ones will be created. My football life passed before my eyes last night on ESPN2 with Abilene and Midland Lee. Only Texans may remember district 5-4A, THE Little Southwest Conference. Odessa Permian, Midland Lee, Abilene Cooper, San Angelo, Abilene, Midland, Odessa High. Dozens of state titles among them all, some of the best HS football ever played- Permian vs Wichata Falls Rider in the playoffs year after year, the caravans of hundreds of cars from Odessa to Abilene or wherever for the playoffs. Christ, I feel almost as old as JRM.

No. College football is still the best.
But fannation is getting the life sucked out of it by spam. C'mon moderators. Do your job.

Yeah, Mods. Stop posting this spam.
Sorry but I can't bring myself to watch college football. There are way too many blowouts particularly the out of conference games and too many bowl games that don't mean anything.
