Idiots....would think they would do SOME research first...
Not idiots, just initial thoughts. And we'll take the "name" into consideration.
But seriously, I don't doubt they belong, just surprised like most. And if we are holding them to a higher standard than other polls, is that a bad thing if they are the #1 team? Shouldn't the best be held to a higher standard?
Not sure what standard you are talking about. They have played arguably the toughest schedule so far of all the unbeaten teams and have not lost. What more do you want?
The BCS? What's 'BCS?'
Oh, that's the opinion-computer-voter thing, right?
Bwahhhhahaahhahahh!!

Lou Holtz said last night on ESPN that OU should be #1 because they don't rely on just one player, they gave Fla. St. their only loss this year, and, overall, they have a very strong team. OU's second string is just as good as their first string. Their freshmen look like seniors. And two great quarterbacks = unstoppable on first down and in the red zone.If OU doesn't take the National Championship this year, I can only blame Bob Stoops, who, until this year, has looked like a one-hit wonder. Well, something amazing has happened to him recently. He's undergone a sea-change. OU will win out. And Boise St. is going down, just like Ohio State.
OU will not take the Championship. They may go into the game ranked #1 but Stoops has repeatedly shown a lack of focus heading into big games. I would take any of the top 10 BCS teams against OU in a bowl.
And you are 100% right, Bob Stoops will be to blame. He is the B12 version of Cooper at tOSU or Zook at Ill-great recruiter, average coach.

I think calling Zook an average coach is giving too much credit. He is a fine recruiter though.
I disagree about Stoops. He may have issues in bowl games, but it could just be circumstances lead to that appearance. In other big games he has been fine. I think Stoops is an excellent coach.

You are right-its just the bowls. Not sure why, but his teams repeatedly lack focus. If it were a one time thing I would agree, but his track record is considerable.
Let me put it this way-which top 10 team would you feel confident that OU would beat in a bowl if you had to place your life savings on the game? With MSU or Utah I could go either way, but the rest I would bet against OU in a heartbeat. Regular season wise though, I would take OU over everyone but Auburn, TCU, Bama, and BSU.
Life savings? Not on your life.
But I like OU over everyone but Ohio St. Oregon, TCU, Boise St., Alabama . It wouldn't matter to me whether it was a bowl game or not.

Nah.. I dont agree. I do believe they have as legit an argument as anyone AT THE MOMENT to be #1.
But their upcoming schedule suddenly looks a lot harder with Mizzou and OSU on the road. (OSU's offense is ridiculous.) And then either Neb or a repeat against Mizzou. And I want to see how this team does on the road. Typically, they DONT fare that well.
Don't get blinded by the ISU win. It WAS ISU. And at home. They looked sharp and consistent. First time this season outside the FSU win. Remember Utah St or Cincy? They have some great playmakers on both sides of the ball but their OLine and secondary can still be had.
If they play as well and as consistently this week as they did last, maybe I'll change my mind.
OU is #1 in the BCS because their opponents are a combined 23-16 and they have quality wins over Florida St., Texas, Cincinnati, and Air Force. Oregon's opponents are a combined 13-24 and their only quality win is over Stanford. We all love watching Oregon play but what they've accomplished to date doesn't compare to OU or even Auburn.

Not sure I agree with the part putting Auburn's accomplishments over Oregon's.
Oregon has thoroughly trounced most of their opponents including a 48-13 dismantling of a team from God's conference. Their average margin of victory is 38 points.
Auburn trounced a couple and squeaked by the rest. Their average margin of victory is 16 points. The Arkansas thriller is what happens when you put 2 teams together that don't play good defense.
IMO Oregon is where they deserve to be. If anything it's Auburn that doesn't deserve to be ranked as high.
I think the difference of opinion about Auburn's accomplishments depends upon whether you count margin of victory toward your definition of accomplishments. If you don't, Auburn's accomplishments are easily greater than Oregon's at this point in the season. However, Oregon seems to be the better team and is where they should be in the BCS at this point imo.

(Not that I would click the link, anyway. I have plenty of opinions of my own, and don't need to have someone else feed me their opinions on some new blog that's craving readers.)

I love watching Oregon's offense. It's impressive to say the least. That said, their 38 point average margin of victory includes victories over 5 teams that won't even be bowl eligible.
There's no doubt that Auburn is lacking on the defensive side of the ball and they have definitely squeaked out some wins. That said, they've beaten 3 teams currently ranked in the Top 25 and at least 4 if not 5 of their wins are against teams that will play in bowl games.
My point is simply that OU and Auburn have proved more at this point of the season. And even though Tennessee is a member of God's conference, this year they are god awful and will be lucky to win 4 games. Not what Oregon expected when they scheduled them but that's the reality.

The problem with Auburn is the same problem Michigan, Baylor, and to a degree tOSU have (and the Ducks had with Dixon). A running QB has to be pretty lucky to make it unhurt through the entire season. When healthy Pat White, Dixon, and the others were awe-inspiring, when not healthy any team built around one dude kinda falls apart.

It helps when that running QB is 6-5 245. In terms of durability, I'd compare Cam Newton to Tebow and VY, not Dennis Dixon or Pat White.
Aside from durability, you have a valid point that shutting down Newton goes a long way toward shutting down Auburn's offense. Not so with Tebow (at least when he had Demps in the huddle). My shrink forbids me to think about the '05 Texas team. Oregon's offense is not just about a mobile QB: LaMichael James is a solid RB.
I think Auburn's bigger question mark (and Oregon's too for that matter) is a swiss cheese defense.

Ok start bad mouthing my team and I have to say something. One the correct statement is Auburn doesn't play good pass defense. They play fairly strong run defense so far this year. We saw what they can do when they actually play 4 good quarters of football Saturday against Arkansas instead of just one good half of football like they have done virtually every other game of the Chizik era. I'm not saying they should be 1 at all, but they are where they deserve to be at this point.
