NFL  > Cleveland Browns  > QB of the future?
October 20, 2010, 10:20 PM
So Colt McCoy looked pretty good for his first career start.. im just worried that everyone is jumping on this bandwagon to quickly. There are going to be some very good quarterbacks in this year's draft, and im concerned that people are going to fall in love with McCoy, and we might pass up on one of these guys in the draft who could be a real franchise qb.

This isn't a knock on McCoy.. just a skeptical fan who has seen this movie before and hoping that we stick with McCoy if he's the right guy.. but if hes not then we need to consider one of the guys in the draft.

PS this is a BROWNS blog.. the last thing i want are steeler fans who've been sniffing fumes from the steel mills commenting in here.

in my opinion the only way to really get an idea of this is to let colt play the remainder of the season.. or at least another 4-5 games. But it sounds like when wallace/delhomme are ready they are going back in..

ps anybody know how the browns are doing as far as cap space? we could porbably use that 7 million giong to delhomme on someone else after this year

This year's uncapped.

Brownsfan, there is no way any one can determine who will be a franchise QB for the most part. It has to play out and coaches have to be patient. Look at Alex Smith of the 49'ers and Aaron Rodgers of the Packers. Smith was the overall number 1 pick with Rodgers dropping to 24th of the first round. Now, who's the better QB of the two? You never know. Another case in point......Ryan Leaf.

Why did the Browns trade away Brady Quinn? He was a top pick, was he not? You have to let these QB's have the time to develop, or your team will always be on a QB carousel. The grass is NOT always greener on the other side of the fence..

Hey Bull, good post. Cleveland fans are beyond desperate for stability at the QB position. I agree that it is hard to judge who will be the next Aaron Rogers, or who will end up the next Ryan Leaf. And Browns fans have a blood thirst for backing the QB that could save the franchise, and are all too ready to crown any QB on the roster as that messiah if the current one at the helm is struggling. Patience is running thin, but I think that that is all that we can really rally around in order to develop that next great QB in Cleveland. Colt looked really good, for the most part against the Steelers. We'll see how he does in New Orleans this weekend. But Cleveland fans want to see the Browns win, and they want it NOW. Patience is harder and harder to come by in NE Ohio.

BrownsFan, there are quite a few Steeler fans on this site that are really good posters, and don't bash the Browns for the sake of bashing them. They want to see the rivalry renewed as much as we do.

Yes, I know they are, and I can't say that I blame them. Like a good parent, you have to be patient with your kids. But, you also have to let them learn on their own at times. Coaching is not much different than being a parent. The coaches catch it from the owners, who are of the mindset of "instant gratification", (for the most part anyway) and most notably with the Cowboys, who are "supposed" to win.
If Holmgren is smart, he'll have patience with the entire kit and kaboodle, from coach on down, and although I'm not all that sold on Mangini, they should have patience with him as well. Good luck with your team....:-)

October 22, 2010  10:20 AM ET

I agree that I'm not entirely sold on Mangini, but I think that he needs a few more years to see this thing through. He took a lot of hits last year with the media, as they painted him to be the dictator in Cleveland. Holmgren was a coach, obviously, and knows that it takes more than a year or two to build a lasting team, one that won't win now for one season and fade into rebuilding the next. I like what is going on in Cleveland; they just need some more pieces to the puzzle. Good luck to your Cowboys, too. I can't believe that they have not turned the corner yet. A lot of behind the scenes stuff going on in the locker room?

Dude, then post somewhere else if you do not like the thread. No need to scream about it. Start a thread that you would like to talk about instead of beating down the person that started this one. believe it or not, there are Browns fans, and football fans alike, that like to talk about what is going on in Cleveland. If you don't like it, that's fine.

Too bad there are no owners who were once coaches. They'd have a better understanding of what it takes to field a good team. Well, Jerry Jones is a wannabe coach, but he's the closest any owner comes to that.

As far as the Cowboys......I don't know. We'll see what happens Monday night with the Giants.

Aaaaawwwwwwww. Was my comment offensive to the Brownie faithful?? All 2 of them?

October 22, 2010  05:35 PM ET

If Colt McCoy can maintain his 70% completion rate and 8.5 yads per attempt, then the pressure is on Mangini and particularly Brian Daboll. I've been very critical of this offense, but the QB position has been in flux. If McCoy proves to be real deal and early signs are very encouraging it becomes now or never for Daboll. If the offense continues to struggle with McCoy and Hillis then something is wrong at the coaching level. I'm already suspicious because the o line has been under performing and it's the one spot that has lots of talent.

wow... wish the thread followed your post more...

So, I agree theres some good QB talent coming up for the draft. However, it seems like we are developing a very run first offense that doesn't require a amazing QB to win. I would rather see us spend draft picks on WR's and a few more defensive players. I think between Seneca and Colt we can get a QB that can manage the game well and get the ball down the field when necessary... we just need a couple downfield threats to make our running game more effective.

I am oviously not a Colt McCoy enthusiast, but I think he can be a good QB eventually. Might not be sexy, but I think our picks are better spent on something other than a QB.
