NFL  > General NFL  > Is TO a Hall of Famer?
October 29, 2010, 08:40 PM
Now, a reflex reaction might be "YES! Look at the records"!

And they are impressive...

15K yards and counting, second only to Jerry Rice.

But his assault on the record books is second only to his assault on the teams he played for.

The 49ers, the Eagles, The Cowboys, The Bills and now the Bengals.

The first three of those he hurt more than he helped. With regard to the Bills he wasn't that great (800 yards with 5 TD's) and he seems to be playing great on the Bengals but they're 2-4.

Remember, it's the Hall of FAME not the Hall of STATS.

There are plenty of men that put up great numbers and didn't get in. (Ken Anderson of the Bengals comes to mind) because it's not about sheer numbers - it takes something extra.

Working against TO is the fact that he's decimated the 49ers, Eagles and 'Boys.

He pulled outrageous stunts and made himself look like a jerk by holding out and doing things like performing situps in his driveway. At times he seems to do everything he can to stir up controversy and hurt the team. From fighting with team mate Hugh Douglas to spitting in the face of DeAngelo Hall to saying he'd rather have Brett Favre than Donovan McNabb as his QB and let's not forget the 'accidental' overdose of Hydrocodone.

Yes, he's statistically a great player but it seems to come at the cost of his own team.

Men like that don't get into Canton unless they buy a ticket.

To the people that put you in Canton, it's not how well you played the game but how much honor you had while doing it. What kind of an impact did you have on your team? Did you help or hurt them? HoFers have to have a certain quality to them because of the men that you're enshrined with.

When you put someone in the HoF you're saying that, "You're just as good or better than these men". They look at you, not just as a player, but as a man.

I don't think he'll get in.

Yes but not first ballot due to his shennagins.

Stat wise yes, character wise no, I guess we will see when the time comes.

Not only has T.O always played at a high level he hasnt declined much with age including his season on the bills because that was a result of qb play. Many great wrs like Harrison and Bruce who TO has or will surpassed fell off a lot more on the end, making T.O. deserve much more credit.

If he is not a first ballot hall of famer...then there is not one...

Lack of a championship plus his character will be detriments but I think eventually he'll get in.

Agree. I think the latter will keep him out first ballot. But he will get in eventually.

The amount of wrs who get in 1st ballot is 5 to the 21. With a log jam of talent like Brown, Reed, Carter, and other explosive wrs like Bruce and Harrison quickly becoming elgible will further complicate the logjam.

I picture T.O. probably having to wait 2-4 yrs depending on how many other superstars are 1st elgible that year.

Good post, Rayne. If it was up to me, and having to judge him on his ability and talent alone, then yes, he'd make it. He is a tremendous athlete. But, he KNOWS it, much like some super models KNOW that they are good looking, and it comes out in their personality, or some actors, who's life has to be a stage. I bet Owens turns to acting when his playing career is over......lol

Being detrimental to his team and selfishness may just come into play in regards to whoever does the voting. If you could cull out the bad parts, then Owens would indeed be a first timer, but he has a lot going against him in those other regards (in my opinion, but there are those who think nothing of how he acts, or acted).

Actions speak a lot louder than words, but in this case, he may be louder than his actions. Time will tell.

His pure number of TD catches puts him in day one...

If T.O. makes it to the HOF do you think we can make it through his induction speech without barfing?

October 30, 2010  10:09 AM ET

He is a tool and a HOF'r

October 30, 2010  10:23 AM ET

Unquestionably.

absolutely, he is!!!

I just thought of another point....

If the HoF committee lets him in, they're saying to future players (including kids) that his ego-centric, drama to a diva level behavior is ok.

They're endorsing, if not encouraging, future generations of players to behave however they want so long as they put up good numbers.

I'm not sure the HoF gods are ready to make that statement.

On the other hand, if they keep him out they're telling future generations that it's not all about the numbers. That sounds more like a message they want to send.

I know what you are saying Rayne, but they are not inducted for that stuff , they are inducted for what they do on the field and they start bringing this stuff in to consideration, then they would hve to remove the ones that have had off field issues and are in the hall as well.

and I will make my point... Lawerance Taylor had several off field issues and is in the hall of fame and deserves to be there. Because no one can say he wasnt a beast on the field.

Roger Goodouche made this point this offseason that they should be voted in by character not just on the field performances.

So is he and you are saying Greats like Ray Lewis, Brett Farve, Randy Moss, Ben Roethlisberger, because they had some issues. I dont think so . They will be remembered as greats IMO .

A player is voted in because of what they do on the field and us as parents have to teach our kids what they do off the field is not acceptable and they should not be idolized for that.

And I think TO deserves to be in the hall, I do not like the guy but no one can argue what he does on the field and that is what they are put in there for not all this other crap.
