NFL  > Cleveland Browns  > New England vs. Cleveland - Monday Thoughts
November 8, 2010, 08:58 AM
I remember it like it was yesterday. I was sitting in the bleachers in Jacobs field in the early summer of 1994 when it hit me.... the Indians don't suck! I was there watching the young team of Carlos, Albert, Kenny and Manny play very compelling baseball, and a couple of friends and I started chanting "You Don't Suck!" - we actually got the whole bleacher section chanting it...

I also remember this next thing like it was yesterday... because it was. The Browns don't suck! In fact, much like the 94 Indians, they have some of the building blocks in place to really start contending. And I am not the only person who thinks this. Mike and Mike mentioned it on ESPN this morning in their good, bad and ugly segment. Get this Browns fans.... we weren't the bad OR the ugly... we were the GOOD (for those of you who struggle with multiple choice).

Here we go:

Colt McCoy - ok.... wow. He is doing a great job and I'll admit it, I am starting to run after this band wagon. My fear before was that he would get destroyed and lose his confidence. So I have to say that part of his success is that protection has been good, and when it has broken down he has done a GREAT job extending plays and looking downfield. This crow pie doesn't taste so bad. B+

Offense - Less trick plays this week, which is actually a very good sign! We stuck to our plan and executed. The run first style is awesome and Hillis is reminding me more of a certain Kevin Mack of yesteryear! I do want to give props to that trick play though... it was about close to being the 'ol "wrong ball" play... that play even had me scratching my head! - A

Defense - Very Good! Even Wright didn't suck! I love the confusing looks and the way the Defense seems to know something no one else does. It is, frankly, fun to watch! I still find myself knocking on wood every time a damn announcer says "and the Browns continue to hold Brady and crew to low yardage" - but the defense is really starting to show their stuff! B+

Coaching - Are you kidding me? Am I actually starting to like Mangini? Has hell frozen over? Did you all watch the staff? They are working together as a team, they are hella motivational to the guys.... they are planning the heck out of these games. Seriously.... I can't believe it.... I'm giving them an A+.

Special teams - Nothing crazy this week... but they did their job very well. SOLID SOLID SOLID. A-

Overall: A

Yes... A - This team is the real deal folks... they are starting to put it together and have some way to go. But we have probably found a QB and a RB.... it really is the best position we have been in in well over a decade!

Great to be a Browns fan today!

Congratulations BuckAye, and other Browns fans! It's good to see your team becoming competitive once again.

Thanks man... it is much more fun to be part of the league than the kicking boy of the league... that's for sure.

Good post again, BuckAye. I think that I am still a little shocked at how well they handled the Patriots on Sunday. I loved how offensive bodies were flying around slamming into defenders and creating huge running lanes. Vickers had a great game. Colt continues to look comfortable and poised in the pocket. These guys have bought into the system and are really executing well. It's gonna be hard to wipe the smile off my face all week.

This team is for real? Sorry hun, but it will take more than just 3 wins for you to be able to say that.

As a matter of fact, it will take more than just one winning season...and you'll have to pull a rabbit out of your hat for that.

The true measure of a team isn't one years success - the NFL is built for that. The worse you do, the easier they make it for you the next year through scheduling and higher draft picks.

The true measure is how a team performs over the long haul.

You've had two convincing wins over tough opponents this year - great job. It's also true that each of those teams had the Steelers coming up the next week and was probably overlooking you.

How will the Browns play when they're on everyone's radar and teams are putting in extra hours scheming for you?

There are but a handful of elite team in the NFL...teams that make the postseason just about every year. The Colts, Steelers, Pats, Ravens, Giants, Packers, etc. These teams are the best because these are the teams that other teams scheme for....they spend extra time in the film room and practice field trying to beat them.

The Browns had a couple good - no, great - games against elite opponents.

Did they surprise the Saints and Pats or were they for real? Only time will tell but you'll need to prove they're legit before I'll agree with you that they are.

What I like in particular here is that you missed the of my post entirely... and that you apparently don't know how to limit the amount of a post you choose to quote.

I never said we were elite or even great. There were two points of this post. #1 to grade our team in SUNDAY's effort. #2. To say that we are moving in the right direction (which is what I was referring to when I said we are the "real deal" In the context of Cleveland football (which is the category in which I was posting) - this team is the real deal compared to other relative false starts we have seen in the last decade. The Anderson year was a flash in the pan, the wins at the end of last season were the same.

My point is that the systems we are putting together, and a couple of the players are very positive steps in the right direction.

I just think it's funny that you (and whatever team you root for) are so bothered by my opinion anyway. News flash buddy... I did not say we were going to the playoffs. Get over yourself and let people be happy that there are some positive things happening in their town.

No she didn't. I believe that Rayne is a Steeler fan, and apparently she doesn't want to believe that Cleveland played a dominant game against a very good Patriots team, without thinking of excuses as to how that happened. Certainly the Browns couldn't do it on their own! *Laughs*

Real deal was (again) in reference to this Cleveland team against other Cleveland teams speaking in a Cleveland Browns forum... I guess I can see how that was misinterpreted.

But I appreciate your message. I can understand someone getting upset with me if I said "your team sucks and mine doesn't" But I clearly wasn't saying that....

Rayne;
You should try letting other people enjoy their teams when they win, especially when they haven't had many of those. That's the whole purpose of having hope. There was, at one time, and long before your time, when the Steelers were in the same position that the Browns have been in. The years before Chuck Noll. The Steelers weren't very good. They had to start somewhere, and they did. These Browns fans are finally having some hope that their team is starting to become a team, and there's not a damn thing wrong with having hope. I saw no evidence of any claims that the Browns were "elite", but I did see where there was hope.
You should not bust any balloons for these long suffering fans. They deserve better than that, as do any other teams fans who have waited and waited. I believe 10% of something is a lot better than 100% of nothing.

Ditto, ditto, and yes, ditto. Very good "points" to your post and I believe that "Blood Rayne" either doesn't understand the hell we ARE climbing up out of or chooses not to because as a Steelers fan, she is afraid of a renewed rivalry.

Always the gentleman, Bull! Some folks can't wait to try and pull the chair right out from under ya! Glad you're not one of those.

Congrats (?) kinda for Wade getting the boot...at least you get rid of a coach that lost control of the team (seemingly, anyway).

The barrel, I guess that is a nice way to put it. I've never been much of a Cowboys fan, but I wouldn't wish what the Browns fans went through on anybody. It's a little early in the season for a team to give up on their coach, maybe they will get it together.
