November 8, 2010, 04:33 PM
During a recent interview, Washington???s Athletic Director Scott Woodward didn???t have the kindest of things to say about the University of Oregon???s athletic department, saying this: ???It???s an embarrassment what their academic institution is.???

You don???t really have to read too far between the lines to figure out what Woodward is saying here.....

He's saying that Oregon kicked UDub's behind on the football field once again.

Reminds me of the college football argument flowchart. When all other arguments about why you lost are exhausted, you have to fall back to academic reputation.

jealous just a wee bit Scott?

So Oregon isn't all that great of a school?

Not sure it matters as long as you get the paper when you graduate, after 2 or 3 years you settle in based on ability anyway, and at a big school like Oregon it seems like you should be able to make plenty of connections.

That's a low blow.

The Pac-10 is notorious for being the best academic conference in the nation (with of course the exception of the ivy league).

I've had the pleasure of working with quite a few folks from UO, and I assure you it's a fine school. Like most schools (including UW, where I work) the kids get out of it what they put into it.

I have no idea what the UW AD is implying but he really needs to be careful. Pots and kettles are kind of the same thing you know...

I think Oregon is a decent school. UDub just hates all things Oregon. Since Washington lost on the field, they can't point to that scoreboard, so the AD tried to point to a different scoreboard.

I will likely be going to U of O next year. It's definetly one of my top 3 choices. I will concede it's probably in the bottom half academically in the Pac-10, but there is no shame in that given the quality of education throughout the Pac-10.

Now if this were the Big 12, than yea, I'd be slightly embrassed.

Interesting that "other" conferences that aren't quite as good, football-wise, as other, always bring up the "quality of education" of the Big XII(10) or SEC....Hmmmmm....kind of like the little guy who buys the Porsche or the big 4X4 Pickup Truck....compensating????

I always wondered about the guys who buy a 4x4 Porsche like the Cayenne--they must really feel insecure.

I'm sure you've heard it... "That's alright, that's ok, you're going to work for us someday". Chanted through many a 1- 10 season...

But seriously, it is possible to have both. USC and UW have national championships in the fairly recent past. Go back far enough and you can find other Pac 10 schools that have them as well. Oregon might pick up one this year. I'm not sure compensating is the right way to characterize it. Displacement maybe? ;-)

Guys? Every one of these I've seen has been driven by a soccer mom.

I disagree. The Pac-10 doesn't need to compensate, they are the conference of champions after all. The Ivy league? Yes, they need to compensate.

And I wouldn't diss an SEC education. Florida and Vanderbilt in particular are great academically.

The Big 12, well, they aren't as good as the Pac-10 at football or sports in general, and the education is 'lacking'.

I don't know about that either. I think it's just for people who've always wanted a porsche, but because they have a family, they can't buy one unless it has room for more than just 2 people. But, how can it really feel like a porsche when it's a 4x4?

I disagree on both counts, OM.

The Pac10 is about .500 against the Big XII over the past 5 and 10 years. Pretty evenly matched.

As for schools, I've graduated from both Buffalo (ranked 121 in US News rankings and below most of the Big XII schools) and USC (ranked 26). The biggest difference I saw was the price tag.

Yea the truth is, there really isn't a way to 'rank' colleges. The fact of the matter is, different things work for different people. Or 'different strokes for different folks'.

But I am very proud to live in an area where the education is of such a high quality.

Rabbit, I can always count on you to back up the things I say with facts. I think I need to do as much research as you so that I don't look like a total idiot when I talk sometimes.

I usually know what I'm talking about, but I don't always have the actual numbers to back it up.

And some other notables:
(UC = University of California)

35. UC - San Diego
38. UC - Davis
39. UC - Santa Barbara
40. UC - Irvine

You do know what you are talking about, and most of us understand the gist of your comments - whether you state facts or not.

Unfortunately, there are some homers that will argue with any comments they don't like - esp if those comments threaten their 'core beliefs'.

So, sometimes, I just point out a few facts.

Then, others can argue all they want but they are forced to use their own facts instead of blurting out an explosion of opinions.

And other times, I opt to blurt out my own opinions!
Bwahhahahahah!!
