ANTIGUA, Guatemala -- Honduras scored a goal in each half and defeated Guatemala 2-0 Sunday in a Central American Football Union under-17 qualifying match at Estadio Pensativo.

The victory clinched first place for Honduras in the three-team Group 2 on goal difference over Panama. As a result, both teams advanced to next February's CONCACAF Under-17 Championship in Jamaica.

Last-place Guatemala must enter into a two-leg playoff with Nicaragua later this month for the last Central American berth.

Though the Hondurans needed a victory to avoid the playoff, both teams started quickly in what proved to be an entertaining game. Within two minutes of the opening whistle, Honduras had a shot blocked and Christopher Ramirez came close for the hosts.

The visitors took a 22nd minute lead, when Julio Moncada headed a corner kick past goalkeeper Johnny Navarro.

Guatemala, which needed only a tie to qualify automatically for the CONCACAF finals, displayed a renewed sense of purpose. Hristopher Robles hit the post, Ramirez missed on another opportunity and Albert Barrientos had an attempt saved.

After the interval, Guatemala continued to push forward as the influential Barrientos missed with a medium-range shot.

Shortly afterwards, as the game opened further, Moncada put the Guatemalan defense under pressure, but Navarro was able to divert his pass before any damage could be done.

An unmarked Manuel Mejia would make it 2-0 in the 77th minute, finishing a splendid Moncada pass.

To their credit, the Guatemalans refused to give up and forced Honduran goalkeeper Allan Torres into two outstanding saves late.
Honduras finished the game with 10 players following the ejection of Carlos Andrade.
