What is considered a dirty hit, what is the standard...Is getting your bell rung considered a concussion?

The Meriweather hit against Heap was dirty, I have to agree

Chung helmet to helmet hit with Ward...this is a very very close call

Umenyiora helmet to helmet hit with Cutler...no flag, no fine, Umenyiora lead with his head and hit Cutler so hard that the Orange QB speaker in Cutler's helmet came out of the helmet through the ear hole. (had to get the homer hit in there...lol)

Any of the James Harrison hits...I say no, when you are on the move and aiming for a moving target with your shoulder to stop the play, and then you get penalized because the ball carrier ducks...go play Chess then...I prefer the NFL

I understand that their has to be safety in all sports, but taking away the bone crushing hits of the NFL, is like taking away wrecks from NASCAR, and knock outs out of boxing. These athletes make great sums of money and know the risks of participating in sports...If the NFL wants to make changes, they need to make changes to the helmet and facemask if they want to help out with safety.

One could even argue that just because a hit is legal, it can still be dirty.

The only ones I consider dirty are the ones that are blatently leading with the helmet or breaking another rule - like hitting a defenseless receiver, etc.

But there's a grey area there, as you were saying, where the target lowers his own target zone. That's not dirty because the hitter didn't tried to hit within the rules.

Like you, I agree that these men accept a certain amount of risk just by playing the game.

Ma'am,Hines got hit clean or there would have been repercussions from the NFL,So why bother defending a lost cause?

I never said the hit on Hines was dirty.

BGD: Good point regarding the change in NFL stance on hits to the helmet. By the NEW definition, Ward was a defenseless receiver as he was already in the grasp and his forward momentum was stopped. The second hit was high and delivered a helmet-to-helmet blow. Pretty straightforward, you would think? FLAG, FINE....just like James Harrison has received for a far less "cheap" shot this year.....But wait! As far as I know, the NFL has made NO COMMENT on Chung's hit to Ward, causing a concussion ( ie HEAD INJURY ). Let's be REAL here....Why is it OK to fine and penalize CERTAIN TEAMS/PLAYERS but not so when THAT TEAM is on the other end of the equation?

I know EZ will be right back with his Ward-hating response. My pre-emptive reply is that the NFL actually enacted a RULE specifically to address Mr. Ward's style of play....the HINES WARD RULE...remember? I don't see any actions aimed at protecting Hines, so enough of the "dirty player" garbage. Fact is, most teams would LOVE to have a hard-nosed, enthusiastic, team-oriented WR like Hines....the ANTI-OCHO/ANTI-T.O......

If they enforced the rules then like they do today, Ward would have been fined heavily and possibly suspended for this one.

Harrison leads with his head, goes helmet to helmet and gets up to celebrate.

Yeah, he's a dirty player and proud of it.

I remember that hit, and it was one of the worst I have ever seen in my life time, it is damn lucky he didn't kill the guy. it hurts me to watch it. thanks for posting...often we forget those if it is not our own team.

Yeah, I don't care who the player is or the team is, no player has the right to try and scramble the brains of another player.

It's unbelievable to me how little respect some players have for other players.

Pro Football is a collision sport with many bang, bang, plays. These type of hits are quite common in the NFL and tough to enforce fairly.

To me, it comes down to respect. Today's players don't seem to respect each other, at all.

Of course, Cribbs said it wasn't dirty. he probably has a pretty good perspective.

Anytime you lead with your helmet with the intention of a helmet to helmet hit, that's a dirty hit.
