QUOTE:
I could not believe the referees in Saturdays game in Columbus calling two excessive celebration penalties against the Buckeyes because two players made a block O gesture to the student section after TD'S. They are slowly draining the fun out of the game. Players should be free to interact with the students who support them. Excessive showboating for individual glory should be punished but not for a quick salute to the home crowd.
The Fairley celebration call in the Auburn- Bama game was ridiculous.

Man, you beat me to it, BSB. Fairley did nothing I haven't seen other players do a thousand times. I hate it when the referees behave as though they were never young or making big plays in big games. (the last part of that sentence is probably true: they never were very good at playing the game)
I was watching the OSU-Michigan game with my Michigan-fan relatives and they were in complete agreement: the flags against Ohio State were completely unwarranted.

Yep...and McElroy celebrated almost the same way when they scored. The announcers were wondering if the ref's had been "warned" about Fairly and were out to make an example?
After the crap he pulled in the Georgia game, Fairley was lucky to be playing at all.

Agree with all these posts... The refs are jacking it up.
Here is the rule from the NCAA rule book.

SECTION 2. Unsportsmanlike Conduct Fouls
No player, substitute, coach or other person subject to the rules shall use abusive, threatening or obscene language or gestures, or engage in such acts that provoke ill will or are demeaning to an opponent, to game officials or to the image of the game, including but not limited
to:
...
(c) Inciting an opponent or spectators in any other way, such as simulating the firing of a weapon or placing a hand by the ear to request recognition.
(d) Any delayed, excessive, prolonged or choreographed act by which a player (or players) attempts to focus attention upon himself (or themselves).

Fairley is a black man. And McElroy is a white Rhodes Scholar. Which one is going to draw the penalty?

I don't think making a block-o with one's hands is "choreographed" any more than a Texas player showing the horns is. Bunch of schlock.

Jeez, it's not like any of this is new or anything. The rules have been enforced for two full seasons now. Locker getting called playing BYU, AJ Green against LSU, and Bama's Marcell Dareus in the NCG come to mind from last season.
So you've seen Texas players make the Hook 'Em sign to the crowd after scoring touchdowns this year, or are you just speculating?

I don't think anyone saw a lot of Texas players scoring touchdowns this year.

I just choked on my wine.
But I have to agree with UB. Part of the reason the Rose Bowl made me so mad with PSU and USC. Sanchez was basically LEADING celebrations by the band and the crowd and the sidelines and not ONE TIME was a penalty called, and it should've been.
Rules is rules, baby!
Celebrations don't belong in college. Not the way the pros do it. Part of the reason I don't watch the NFL much is because of the showmanship.
" Next time you make a touchdown, act like you've been there before" Vince Lombardi.

Excessive celebration is one thing. I just don't think making a small O with one's hands and gesturing at your own student section is excessive. They're young players, they're excited, let them have some fun when they make a play.

But it's against the rules, no? So we can speculate all we want to "what it was" or "what it wasn't". UB posted the rule. And yes, it is against the rules.

If it's against the rules, it's agaisnt the rule. And it's not necessarily that it is excessive so much as it's showboating. Something tells me that if it wasn't tOSU, you wouldn't be making a huff.

Fun is jumping up and down, in joy. It's high fives. It's not "LOOK AT ME!! LOOK AT ME!!"
That is what the problem is.

No, I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of when the flag is thrown for celebration, it's just the first time in recent memory I was watching a game where the refs were calling penalties on something that is seemingly innocuous.
And I don't think the rule is enforced evenly. I also don't know when the rule was adopted, but it was apparently after this, and I believe this is now referred to as an "iconic" image.

Agreed. Didn't look like much of a celebration to me. That call changed a 4th-and-long into a first down that led directly to a Bama TD. If Auburn had lost, the controversy of that call would have been a lot bigger deal than it turned out. After the AJ Green fiasco, the SEC refs dodged a bullet on this one.
Damned changes to the html usage. I still can't figure it out. Anyhow, the image would be Desmond Howard striking a certain pose.
