NFL > Dallas Cowboys > Panini Has 25 New Americas Team Cards Out
November 29, 2010, 10:42 AM
For those of you who are still child like with collecting cards like myself Panini has a new insert set of Dallas Cowboys cards with the infamous nickname on the card. Twenty five players of the past and present are in this insert set. Some are autographs, threads and regulars. The set is called "Limited" because there are any where between 10-100 cards of each type of card. This is the fourth set of Americas Team cards from card giants. Upper Deck was the first with a 15 card set in 93, Topps had a 4 card set in 05, Upper Deck once again with a 100 card set last year and now Panini. The company also has a tribute to the 50 year anninversary season but the other cards don't don the nickname. The total of 127 different Americas Team cards in circulation shows the card companies reverence to the Dallas Cowboys despite 15 years of mediocrity.

I noticed you weren't here for that Cowboy's losing streak most of the year. You talked a lot of trash in the preseason, then vanished.

November 29, 2010 10:54 AM ET

Yeah, I was also wondering about that. This board reminds me of another fan I once knew who disappeared.............America's Team Advocate........

November 29, 2010 10:54 AM ET

And from NY too.

I came here around when they were 1-3 but I did talk trash in preseason. Do you think the media trashed the Cowboys when they said a million times how many years they hadn't won a playoff game? Pretty much every time the Cowboys were spoken of? Do Bears fans have to hear that the Bears have only won one championship since 1963? Do Packer fans have to hear a million times that the Packers have only won one championship since 1967? Do the Vikings have to hear that they can't win the big one and have lost 26 times in the playoffs? But.. in 70 the Cowboy fans had to hear that after losing only five times in the playoffs. Dallas was openly called the "Team That Can't Win the Big One" in the newspapers after valiantly taking the mighty Packers to the wire twice as a young team? Instead of praise they got criticized and called chokers which was classless. Amazing how Cowboy fans can't suffer with their teams failures without the a_ _h_les in the media announcing their failures but not for other teams. Be a Cowboy fan and you'd see the cr_p we put up with. My problem was I forget that not all fans hate the Cowboys.

The Cowboys take more heat than other teams when they lose? Probably, but that's what you get for calling yourself "America's Team". It puts a big target on your back every year. EVERYONE wants to beat Dallas regardless of your record. You put yourselves in the spotlight and this is the price you pay.

That's one of the reasons why Tom Landry didn't like it.

November 29, 2010 11:46 AM ET

so where can I get those 25 Panini Steeler cards?

So its fine with you that Dallas fans get mistreated? Thats exactly why I want the nickname. To annoy the hell out of the haters and they can deny it all they want but its true. Most fans root against Dallas. There is a double standard with Cowboys fans as opposed to other teams fans in the media. Period. It was going on before the nickname started also.

Gee there are 127 different Cowboys cards in circulation with the nickname "Americas Team" written on them? Check facebook, ebay, youtube, espn message boards and Dallas is the most popular team. The last four annual Harris polls have the Cowboys as the most popular team even with the Steelers two SB championships.

I was around back then...People hated the 'Boys because they were arrogant. People like Cliff Harris and Henderson running their mouths all the time. They came across as braggarts. They thought they were inherently better than everyone else.

Had the 'America's team' label not came along, I'm sure that would have faded as that current batch of Cowboys started to retire.

When you're a fan of a club you accept all the stuff that goes along with it - from Lombardi's to baggage. I didn't like having to answer for what Holmes or Ben did, but it goes with being a Steeler fan...as does getting to gloat about 6 Lombardi's, etc.

I'll telll you honestly that I cheer against Dallas specifially because of the 'America's Team' label. I find it self righteous and being hated is the price you pay for that.

You seem to take pride in that label, but don't like the baggage it carries - that Dallas fans are mistreated. It comes with the turf. If you want the nickname, then don't complain about the lightning it draws.

The main reason the Cowboys are hated is because of the amount of fans they have. It annoys the home state fans and I can't blame them. My friend who used to live in Dallas told me there are alot of Skin fans there and I hated hearing that. As far as the players, people are people, there were alot of stand up guys on that 70s Cowboys team too. There are alot of Cowboy fans around, some good others front runners but they are there more then any other team. The Steelers are very popular but not as popular as the haters in the media want to give the impression.

And yet the Steeler fans are the ones known for taking over other people's houses. Remember when we played in Texas Stadium in 2004? Over 20K black and gold in your house. When you played in Hines field four years later, you didn't return the favor.

You're not hated because of the amount of fans you have because we have just as many, if not more. I think the same can be said of the Pats right now as well. You're hated because of the label of 'America's team'.

There were stand up guys on the Cowboys from the 70's? Absolutely. Staubach comes to mind. But the arrogance of Harris and Hollywood negated what everyone else was doing. Crying about losing SB XIII didn't help them, either.

I've been a Cowboys fan for 40 something years, ATF. Not many people here have mistreated me in any way, shape, form, or fashion, and I've been in FN for 3 years. There has been a few who want to start mouthing, but guess what? They have a right to their opinion about the Cowboys, and it does not cause me to lose sleep, money, or whatever. I won't play into their hands when they do that, because they want you to make a sarcastic remark. They sit there and laugh because it's "so much fun". So, why give them the pleasure of riling you?..
So, I choose not to let them control me. Besides, how can I control anything the Cowboys do or don't do? Or, for that matter, the so called haters? I can't, but I can control myself.

Bull,
it's a lesson one learns after many years. You and I have logged those hours. That sort of calm and serenity comes after you see one's kids walk out the door, they take up the mantle of being noisy and full of bluster. Just my 2 cents

November 29, 2010 07:15 PM ET

Glad to see ATF back, he was quite fiery when he arrived but after a few tries he became quite friendly and much more engaging. A good thing for all.

It also comes from learning how to accept what the Cowboys will and will not give you too.........lol....Our expectations sometimes exceed their ability to provide, so I've learned to "go with the flow", take what they will give me, and go on.

From the Wall Street Journal:

In a first-of-its-kind study performed this summer, Nielsen Co., the media-research firm, developed a system for ranking the popularity of NFL teams based on each team???s local and national TV rankings, how often they???re mentioned on the Internet and how many visitors they attract to their official websites. The report, dubbed the Nielsen Sports Media Exposure Index, is the company???s first attempt to classify pro-football teams in this manner.

The Nielsen report uses one year of data, but separate research from the past two decades has shown similar results. Harris Interactive, a New York market-research firm, has been asking respondents to name their favorite NFL team annually since 1992. The Cowboys came out No. 1 on 11 occasions in that poll and were never lower than No. 4. The Rams, since they moved to St. Louis in 1995, were in the bottom five on five occasions. The only teams that fared worse than the Rams were the Bengals and the Jaguars. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished next-to-last in the Nielsen study.

So it appears that the Dallas Cowboys are indeed ???America???s Team.??? The Cowboys did have help from the NFL, who gave the Cowboys a league-leading six national appearances, which equates to a colossal 117 million viewers. But it???s not just television where the Cowboys are getting all of their exposure. Dallas was helped in the study by the immense amount of traffic their website draws???nearly 50% more monthly unique visitors than the second-place Steelers. Overall the Dallas Cowboys were an astounding 23% more popular than the the No. 2 team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. The New York Giants were the third most popular team, followed by three of the four teams in the NFC???s North division: the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings.

It appears that Cowboys fans can legitimately call their team, ???America???s Team.???

Yes....we are. Moreso probably.

If not, you need to be ashamed of yourselves for letting us take over your house like that.
