Soccer  > General Soccer  > Qatar picked for 2022 World Cup, Russia gets 2018
December 2, 2010, 11:43 AM
ZURICH, Switzerland - Qatar was chosen as the host of the 2022 World Cup and Russia as the site of the 2018 tournament on Thursday.

The decision denied the return of the World Cup to the United States for the first time since 1994. The Americans had bid against Qatar along with Japan, South Korea, and Australia.

Russia was picked over bids from England, Netherlands/Belgium and Portugal/Spain.

The announcements were made by FIFA President Sepp Blatter before an audience at FIFA's headquarters and a worldwide television audience.

The vote was taken by a 22-member executive committee, which was without suspended members Amos Adamu of Nigeria and Reynald Temaril of Tahiti. The pair were barred after being accused - in essence - of a willingness to sell their vote in the selection process to undercover newspaper reporters.
