NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > Star Studded Players in Dallas Are A Thing of the Past.
December 6, 2010, 12:36 PM
Wow its something how far the Cowboys have fallen the last fifteeen years. To witness the Landry and Johnson years was to enjoy top quality players at alot of positions and budding players warming the bench? It sure was an awesome experience. Now I look at this team and I see alot of overpaid players? Ware isn't doing much at all. He isn't one of the better players in this league. Anyone who watched Terrell Suggs last nite saw a dominant player. When has Ware dominated a game like that? Ratliff is another whose play has dwindled since his wallet got fatter. Terrence Newman is the second highest paid cornerback in Cowboys history while five former Cowboy safeties had more interceptions in their careers. Waters, Harris, Downs, Thurman and Cornell Green had more then 24 ints. Former players must cringe when they see their salaries. How many players on this awful defense could've started on the 77 Cowboys? The only one is Ware. And thats a maybe. That Stuartner defense played a 4/3? Ware is strictly a pass rusher. Is he more of a de.? He isn't big enough or strong enough to play end. Is he a better all around player then Ed Jones or Harvey Martin were? lol Absolutely not. Those players help make a dominant defense. These players of 2010 are duds payed like studs. The only chance of winning a championship in Dallas is if we get a defensive coordinator to work wonders. If I am one of those players on that defense being paid millons I'd be embarrassed to face Jones... I'd slip out the back if Jerry came in the locker room, I really would. Its a disgrace.

ATF, agree with you the defense stinks! Dallas needs a Safety and players to replace Olshansky and Spencer and Jenkins. That would be a start.

December 6, 2010  01:10 PM ET

B.S. Flag on this one. Romo is a top caliber QB, Dez Bryant will be shinning WR/ST player for years to come. Witten is a top TE in the league.

D Ware? Never take over a game? You're kidding me right? Dude has had 10+ sack seasons since his rookie year. And has way better stats and posted numbers to prove this than Suggs.

Funny, this team was the exact same last year, and I didn't see a blog like this. Dallas has the players, and the talent, no doubt. moneypaid is well paid, b/c the production is there. If you are complaining about the playoffs and SB, i'd say coaching may have more to do with it.

I don't follow the Cowboys very well, but from what i've seen the players highlighted, produce very well for what they are paid. I cannot speak much for the defense other than Ware.

I'd like to give Jenkins some time because I can't figure out for the life of me how Jenkins shut down the Eagle receivers in three games last year? He actually did a nice job vs Andre Johnson as well. But this year hes been toast. Wayne chewed him up and spit him out yesterday.

I'm curious to know who has left the team since the beginning of the season when you were certain that it would take a team made of Greek Gods to defeat them.

Shhhhh....ATF is just waiting to pounce on Dallas haters. ;)

I think we have a few good players on offense. Romo and Witten are quality players. Austin looks to be a good second receiver. I love Dez but what the hells with the injuries? Please Dez lets hope this year is just a fluke because Dez gets dinged up an awful lot. Lets hope the ankle heals. Hell he sat the whole six weeks and it still was bothering him this year. As far as our offensive line?.... Where were they this year? Free looked pretty bad yesterday. I know Freeney is one of the best but he still looked bad vs the Giants as well. As far as the rest.... we saw them try to run the ball from inside the five with the game on the line like five times and failed to score a td in the closing minutes? Wasn't for the Witten td we settle for a fg. You ban have Kosier, Columbo, Gerode and Davis. Why didn't they pass block for Romo like this? Hmm gotta wonder?

You be in NY and hearing negatives about your team for 15 years, you'd be gloating too after they went 11-5 and won a playoff game. Yea I thought they were a good team but in this league 11-5 means absoltutely nothing. Ask the Steelers who in their last two SB championships failed to make the playoffs the following year? Its a weak league. The Raiders might make the playoffs!? lol

December 6, 2010  01:45 PM ET

money paid is money well spent because the production is there?????? who are you watching? dallas has the highest payroll in the NFL and we were eliminated from the playoffs a mth ago. dallas has some quality players, but nothing like the teams under jimmy johnson or landry that won multiple SBs. this team has lots of problems... including a GM that gives players bloated salaries when that much excessive money is not warranted or earned. i love the cowboys.... have for 35 yrs. but i am not blind to the fact that this generation of players lacks the heart of the players like stabuch or aikman. and to say romo is a top caliber QB... he has not earned this label. top caliber QBs LEAD their teams to the playoffs year after year. romo has yet to even come close to doing this... he's just another player with a monster salary that has yet to prove himself..... sorry if this offends, but it's just how this fan sees it!

December 6, 2010  01:45 PM ET

Mike Ditka - who actually WAS a Dallas Cowboy - said something.

"It's like the players today want the glory, but they want someone else to do all the dirty work for them".

Yeah, that about sums it up.

Ware not doing much???

You must not be watching the same games I guess dude...Ware has 9.5 sacks this season to Suggs 9 and that is after his "big" game last night. Ware has more sacks than ANY player in the NFL over the last 3 seasons...40.5 to be exact...Suggs has 21.5, so they are not even in the same zipcode.

How about talking what the Cowboys are doing right now under Garrett???

They are a Roy Williams fumble at the Saints 2yd line on Thanksgiving from being 4-0 since JG took over.

They have now beaten the Giants AND the Colts on the road. The beat up a Detroit team by a wide margin and came back from 17 down vs the Saints to almost win vs the SuperBowl champs.

This team has ZERO to play for right now....they can all collect their game check and go through the motions.

Instead, Garrett has them playing fired up football.

Watching them right now gives me a LOT of hope for next season.

For 1, Dallas will get a great draft pick....#2, they will play an easier schedule because of their record. And, with Romo and Dez healthy and hopefully this team will have moved on from Marion Barber, they will be even more explosive.

Overall, I am proud to watch Dallas gut it out...sad to think had they not held in the Skins game and lost Romo in the Giant game where we could be right now.

All in all....I am pleased with what could be.

December 6, 2010  02:10 PM ET

You can count the players on this team living up to their contracts on 1 hand. Which is sad. And until that number gets over about 18 ... we will be mediocre at best ... no matter who the coach is.

agree totally. and as far as "they can all collect their game check and go through the motions" it is nice to see them play well and actually earn there checks like most of us do, but the first part of the season... that's exactly what they did. so, yes the is something to build on for next season, but more changes are needed if this team is to achieve its ultimate goal.

Dude, the Cowboys have lost what six games by seven or less points? On those drives in the closing minutes of 4th quarters where was Ware? Stats are misleading. Where was he in the Saint game on the final drive? Where was he yesterday when the Colts drove for the final score? I've seen him get blocked by big tightends? He isn't a great player. Hes an inconsistant very good player. If we stay with this guy Pascharelli we might has well try to trade him a #1. Seriously have you seen how many points we've given up this year? Who cares? Hes a non factor. Hell like four touchdowns every game? How many fumbles Ware cause? Sorry hes just not that good.

Roy Williams caught a first down pass yesterday, saw a guy coming and he steps out of bounds without getting an trading two yards for a hit? After an interception last week Sensobaugh gets an int, sees a tackler coming and steps out of bounds? We have to hope Garrett gets the players who give their all. How about 53 Irvins?

December 6, 2010  03:12 PM ET

Or 53 Romos, Wittens, Aikmans, Emmitts, Waters, Woodsens, ... etc ... this team is a bunch of soft players allowed to stay soft by the owner making excuses for heir play. JJ always says how much talent is on this team. Show it to me. Players are all "show me the money ..." ... show me the talent. put up or shut up.

Cowboys had the 28th lowest payroll in NFL in 2009 and due to an uncapped year, it shot through the roof. With the caliber players they have, i'd say it is a pretty good production for what they are receiving from the players. Like I already said, playoffs and SB is a coaching element. Their W/L is pretty clear from their old coach, as to why it was so lopsided. Under their new HC, they have been pretty well oiled. Players play the games, but you gotta be well coached come end of DEC, beginning of Jan to even think about making a run. Dallas hasn't been.

Actually if you look at Wares stats for the 4th quarter (splits), there is little to no difference in production throughout the other 3. iN fact it is better than the 3rd quarters, and pretty much identical to 1st, and 2nd ones. Even his 3rd down stats are pretty well rounded. You can say, where was the guy on this crucial play or that one, but you could also say the same thing for any other LB that doesn't make a play on every gleaming/crucial play.

You're speaking of a DIFFERENT team, a DIFFERENT era, DIFFERENT coaches and DIFFERENT players. Not to mention DIFFERENT rules. The Cowboys no longer use the Flex or any of Landry's innovations.

"Ware isn't doing much at all".... They could have drafted Shawn Merriman....would you have liked him better? Let me ask you this......do you focus your entire attention on what Ware does? Of course not. Most people are watching the offense, regardless of team. Their eyes are following the ball, not the O or the D lines. How can you say that? Ware is a beast, and chances are, he gets double teamed a lot of times. Same with Ratliff. Ware also drops off in coverage too.

If you aren't happy with the Cowboys, then by golly, feel free to root for one in NY. Simple as that........sheeesh. As for me, I'll stick with what I get, and although sometimes I don't agree with what Jerry Jones does or says, or how the team plays, the Cowboys ARE, and WILL ALWAYS be my team. And not because I'm in the 'home state'.

Reggie Wayne is one of the best, and has one of the best QB's throwing to him. The receiver always has the advantage of going against any corner, because HE KNOWS what he's going to do, and where he's going. The corner and secondary do NOT. They have to guess for the most part.
Wayne chews up and spits out a lot of corners, not just Jenkins.

December 6, 2010  04:14 PM ET

Cowboys fans .. step right up ... take a look at your starting secondary ....

CB Mike "toast" Jenkins
CB Terrance "old man river" Newman
FS Alan "whos my guy" Ball
SS Gerald "stone hand" Sensabaugh

Maybe the worst starting secondary in the league
