NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Joe Paterno retires
December 9, 2010, 08:19 AM
In a stunning move, Joe Paterno announced his retirement today, retracting earlier announcements saying he would return in 2011.

"Urban Meyer thinks he can gain sympathy by quitting before our game." Paterno responded at his weekly press conference.

"He cannot quit. I'm retiring. All of the ESPN segments will have to be about me. The team.. I've only asked them to win over 400 for themselves... they have to win one more for me. They have to want to win one for me more than Florida wants to win one for Urban."

Paterno fielded numerous questions about what he would do during his retirement.

"I don't know what I'll do. I have no hobbies other than football. I don't play golf. Sue doesn't want me in the kitchen." (reporters laugh)

"I think I may move into a consulting position, focus on recruiting... look at position battles for next year... tell Jay Paterno to make a Quarterback good for once. Look at that Auburn kid... #2... He was just McGloins size last year. He's now what, six six? Find out what they're doing in Auburn. I might call some plays and stay on the sidelines. Yell at a few people. It's fun. It's fun for the kids."

When asked if he would spend time with his family like Urban Meyer, Paterno responded... "I've been truly blessed. I have five wonderful kids and seventeen grandchildren. Holidays at my house have 40-50 people over for dinner. I'm not going anywhere near that. I might take up fishing. Put up holiday decorations or something."

Joe, I believe I speak for all of Penn State... we wish you well in your retirement and look forward to seeing you on the sideline next year anyway.

That's funny stuff. Todd Blackledge was a recruit in 1979 and Penn State's competitors on the recruiting trail were already nudging recruits and saying, "you know, Joe won't be there forever..."

JoePa retiring would be like Pontiac, Plymouth, Oldsmobile or Mercury to stop making cars.

Preposterous.

I confess that I did go to various news sites to verify this after reading the first paragraph. Nicely done Grue.

Yea. Meyer is 46; the same years that JoePa has been HC @ PSU!
