1st has to be Impact Receiver to streach out the defense, and allow Gore more room to work. They dont honor the receivers we have, and put 8 in the Box every week to stop Gore.
2nd O-Line must be a priority. Sims needs to be waived and the Niners need to place emphasis in improving a very mediocre o line
#1 Game Breaking Wide Receiver with SPEED. Too many times Gore has worked with 8 and 9 in the box because our receivers get no respect.
#2 O-Line needs to be revamped. Better to get free agent linemen and draft later rounds for talent. They need to waive Sims, as he is a tackling dummy/Blocking Sled...
#3 QB - Hill will be servicable for 2-3 years, why not resign Smith to a WAY lower contract and bring in young talent from 2 or 3rd round to compete and groom a young qb to perhaps take over the position in 2-3 years
#4 DL - We still need an Impact player on the D-Line to rush the QB. the Pressure just isnt there most games and without that stud pass rusher, we cant move forward as a playoff contender.
I hope the Niners keep Singletary, but bring in Holmgren as the GM. The DORKS need to spend money on this team. They have gone on the cheap for long enough, and it is time they stepped up and paid the price to field a winner
It is safe to say the Niners need to upgrade their Offensive and Defensive Lines either through the draft or free agency, draft a young stud safety (Mays from USC?), and nab an impact wide receiver (trade, draft, or free agency). Obviously, they need to give the QB time to scan the field instead of alluding a strong pass rush. The pass rush can be improve with an upgrade of personnel or improved defensive backfield coverage (the Niners lack this). Lastly, there needs to be continuity with the Offensive Coordinator position, so bring back Coach Martz (he is a good game day coach) or pick up Norv Turner after he is fired in San Diego.
I think it comes down to the managerial situation. New GM would be a good place to start. Someone who isnt afraid of York. They need to hold on to one offenseive strategy. I think they will do all that they can to bring in Matt Cassel. Ive watched this kid play all year out here and he is the real deal.
1st rd-RT
2nd rd-Speed WR
3rd-pass rushing DE
4th rd-MLB to at least help willis/or a safety
5th rd-guard for depth
6th rd- speed corner
7th rd- a kick returner...we've seen what a stud returner can bring and rossum is a one year guy.
Taylor Maze. No doubt about it. Mark Roman is trash...we need to improve that secondary and this Maze kid is a freak of nature.
I agree with Sundevil. Watching Mark Roman look like one of my high school players in the Cover 2 each week sure does take a toll on me. He is a non-factor (unless you count him being on the other team's WRs' hi-lite reels). I think the pick should be Mays from USC or the safety from Bama', Johnson. Another one to think of is Curry, the LB from Wake. He would be a nice pass rusher at OLB for us. No need for a QB early........Cassel anyone?????

I haven't seen any mock drafts yet .. but over the last few years its been QBs, D line, Linebackers and O line at the top of the list each year. After the debacle that was Alex Smith I don't see them drafting a QB that high. I would probably pick D-Line or Linebacker first round .. then go O line second round.
So many holes, so little draft positions. On offense - qb, rb, and wr. On defense - stud de, nt, ilb, but these may be resolved with the return of base 4-3 next season as practice makes perfect. QB - Need to resolve this with either two picks in any round that provides an upgrade and backup to Hill, assuming a release or trade of Smith and O'Sullivan (sorry but either are NOT NFL ready for 49ers). A stud rb to backup to Gore is a must. A wr is also a must. Those three should be drafted. All other needs may be available in the fa market. Most important, replacement for McClueless is also required.
the first round looks to be top heavy in premiere ot's, so pairing one with joe staley for 8 years looks good to me.jason hill and josh morgan are coming on so i would spend the 2nd on another sideline to sideline mld to pair with patrick willis(assuming we stay with the 3-4). after that add depth up and soen the roster. it is too earley to tell exactly which players will be availible when we pick so i'm sorry but i dont have any specifics for my comment.
oh yah and
BRING SINGLETARY BACK !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a three year deal would be fair.

i forgot to add to above
the qb position could be adressed by checking in on the much lowered asking price of derek anderson in cleveland or bringing in the soon to be free agent and california native matt cassel to compete with shaun hill (who just may be the answer himself).

Making Singletary as coach is a good frist step. Forcing out Martz is a bad step, need an experienced OC to help make that draft day and future qb decision and McClueless is NOT capable (He being the guy that Nolan hired initially). Once that is settled (Martz as OC), then the real first question is what to do with Smith. Smith needs to go as he is too expensive as a backup and has yet to prove he is a franchise. The same goes for JTO, he isn't even a good backup. Once these are decided, it's clear a QB or two is a priority, one to groom and another as backup. Free agency qb? The second part is a backup/replacement for Gore. The Niners took a hit when Gore was out. Need a capable replacement and, likely, another for backup. A first round or second round choice makes sense here. After this, then it's the lines, especially another defensive rushing end or tackle in a 4-3 mode.

Can't believe I'm on a Niners thread, but I like what Singletary has done, and given quality players, Mike Martz is a brilliant OC. That being said, fire them both. LOL
Alright I understand what everyone is saying on here about getting a receiver. We don't need one. Bruce will keep going and if re resign Bryant Johnson he is not bad either. Morgan just needs to stay healthy and he will be a beast. We need to focus on our defense. Look at the Ravens, they built an elite defense and it got them a super bowl. Our biggest needs are safety(I'm tired of watching at least one long pass play a game), a huge NT, and some pass rush help which will be hard to find. And some more offensive linemen. If we can trade back in the first round that is what we should do and try to get Taylor Mays from USC. He is a freak.
Give me the GM job,
Correct, Taylor Mays needs to be the first round pick, there will be many linebackers in the 3rd round that could start for the niners and with Patrick Willis at his side, he will be guaranteed AT LEAST 100 tackles making this defense a smash, a hope for me is the receiver from North Carolina to slip to the second round which will give the niners the hands and size to help Gore and Bruce.
Earlier, somebody was mad at the letting go of the Mike Martz. I don't want them to be a throwing team, we need Gore to be used CORRECTLY, I believe Mangini should swallow his head coaching pride and be the 49ers OC.
With Mangini's Patriot roots, I believe Matt Cassel can make a nice transition and maybe even continue on his 4 TD a game average.
O-lineman should be drafted and not signed in free agency because if signed they bring other habits that we may not need for our team, but if they are drafted they can be told to forget everything they were taught in college if they want to be successful in the pros.
Nate Clements just needs to mesh with the D and he will be back to top form.
Taylor Mays from USC in the 1st round. /end conversation
There won't be any 1st round linemen left at the 10 spot. take Mays and get the linemen later. don't forget that Balmer will be in his sophomore year and may show some solid improvement.
Tebow, Pat White,Nate Robinson ( Bradford not avail. by this time ) should be focus of 1st pick. Plenty of good speed burners at WR for 2nd pick. Wells or Shonn Green would be a good fit to start grooming behind Gore. Maybe Mays in the def. backfield? Then move on.
It really depends on who is left at the 10 spot for the first round. If by some miracle you see crabtree, stafford, andre smith, or maybe, just maybe malcom jenkins falls to the ten spot, I think you'll see the niners take taylor mays from USC. I think the likes of Ed Reed have shown what a true ball hawking safety can do for a D, and not only is mays a ball hawk, but hits like a linebacker. I'm pretty sure Mays is the pick. In the second round, I think you'll see an offensive lineman or defensive lineman. Herman Johnson from LSU, George Selvie from USF, BJ Raji from BC at DT, or Phil Loadholt from OK. In the third round, it really depends on who they've taken in the 1st and second. Two buckeyes are a possibility, Alex Boone or Brian Robiskie at Wr, or maybe Andy Kemp from Wisc. Larry English from Northern Ill would be a possibility. I don't think they'll take a QB...if they do I see it being a flyer on a project...maybe someone like graham harrell or brett rhomar if you're looking big schools, or Mike Reilly from Central Washington from a small school. I don't think you'll see that happen until rounds 5 or 6 if it happens at all.
Unless by some miracle Stafford, Crabtree, or Andre Smith falls to the niners at 10, I think they'll take Mays from USC. Ed Reed has shown the importance of a ball hawking safety, and not only is he a ball hawk, but he hits like a linebacker. 3 other OTs are also a possibility I suppose, Michael Oher from Miss, or Eugene Monroe from VA. Malcom Jenkins as well.
In the second round, if they do take Mays, I think the focus needs to be on O-line or D-line. Greg Hardy from Ole Miss, Phil Loadholt from OK for a tackle, BJ Raji at NT from BC, George Selvie from USF, or maybe even a Brian Cushing. Matt Shaughnessy maybe also a possibility from Wisc.
Third round really depends on what they didn't get in the second round, so again, D-line or O-line help, or possibly a WR. Two OSU Buckeyes would be a possibility, Alex Boone or Brian Robiskie (I find Robiskie to be the type of WR they need personally. With two burners in Morgan and Hill, they need a brandon stokely type; someone with good hands and solid route runner). I could also see them taking Larry English from Northern Ill in this spot, Deangelo Smith from UC, or Andy Levitre from Oregon State.
In terms of QB, if they take one, it'll be a flyer to work on. Graham Harrell would fit the bill, so would Brett Rhomar from Sam Houston State. Also, Mike Reilly from Central Washington who has good size. If they take one though, I don't expect it until rounds 5, 6, or 7.
Sorry for the double post...thought I had cancelled that first one.
