NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > How can a team stop Cam Newton and Auburn's offense?
December 20, 2010, 06:54 PM
I've watched every Auburn game this year and the teams that have had the greatest success against Cam are those who rush with a disciplined defensive line. Containment and keeping Newton in front of them is the key. Defensive lineman and LBers must keep in control of their momentum or Cam will use that against them. Cam has literally run circles around defenses trying to go for the big hit against him. Alabama did a great job playing disciplined defense in the first half of their game and this shut Auburn and Newton down solid. Newton has made many aggressive defenses look silly this year. If you watch this video specifically at the 52 second mark you'll see what I mean. Keep Cam in front of you, and do what you can to stop the pass. So far no team has been able to do both. Maybe Orgeon will be the first. Here's the link.

DANG!!!! Texas is looking for a new DC...have you applied?

December 20, 2010  07:02 PM ET

No... They'll probably just steal Auburn's DC again. Texas got both of their last two from Auburn.

Is it really about stopping Cam or is it about winning the game!

I'd say - cover his receivers, pressure him heavily, and tackle his booty when he tries to scramble.

Maybe if you post something beside how great you think Cam Newton is....

Seriously, he is a great athlete having a great year, but let him pull up his pants and get off your knees, I'm starting to think you have a crush...

Stop the moneytrain for one.

Well, you have to have a secondary capable of effective man coverage so that he has no open receivers. All of the guys in the box have to work together - cannot have a shadow assigned solely to the QB. Get off the blocks and preasure him, pick up the backs/ends who block and release to deny him an outlet, contain him - don't let him get between or behind you, tackle him at the knees. If he's not down, if the whistle hasn't blown, keep hitting him. Gang tackle.

Gotta slow down the no-huddle. Technique is critical here, so pay attention.

Every time there's a tackle and a pileup, an Oregon player needs to untie an Auburn player's shoe. Every time. Try for the QB's shoe if it's in-play.

Ditto for Auburn.

Call it "The Battle of the Shoelaces".

Go smaller and faster on the ends and put a spy on him. If he can't beat you with his feet Oregon will outscore AU.

December 21, 2010  02:09 PM ET

Alabama did for a half what no one else has done with consistency...they beat the OL off the block. most, not all, but most of the success bama had was because they were 3 yards deep before cam received the snap. you have to do all the basics of a disciplined defense but it won't work if you're not forcing cam to make a decision before the play even starts to develop.

Best way to beat an offensive juggernaut is to not let them on the field, control time of possession control the game.

good point. might seem like a challenge for Oregon because of the way they sprint down the field but one of the most impressive things i saw this year was the last 9 minutes of the Oregon vs. Cal game. Oregon methodically marched down the field getting first down after first down. They probably could have scored at some point but instead just ran the clock out.
