So hypothetical thread here....using Sherdog's Heavy Weight Rankings this is what a cross promotional Heavyweight Grand Prix would look like...

#1 Cain Velasquez vs #16 Mirko CropCop
#2 Brock Lesnar vs #15 Brendan Schaub
#3 Fabricio Werdum vs #14 Ben Rothwell
#4 Fedor Emilianenko vs #13 Roy Nelson
#5 Junior Dos Santo vs #12 Cole Konrad
#6 Shane Carwin vs #11 Josh Barnett
#7 Frank Mir vs #10 Antonio Silva
#8 Alistair Overeem vs #9 Antonio Nogueira

Here's how it will work. Pick who you think would win each match-up. Take into account the matchup stylistically, not just who you think has better credentials. I will leave each thread up for a few days and tally up who gets the most votes to win each matchup and then I will create the second round of the grand prix based off of these results. If this one works well and I get a lot of responses I will do a LHW next!

My picks:
Cain over CroCop
Lesnar over Schaub
Werdum over Rothwell
Fedor over Nelson
Konrad over JDS
Carwin over Barnett
Mir over Silva
Overeem over Nog

Cain over Mirko
Lesnar over Schaub
Werdum over Rothwell
Fedor over Nelson
Konrad over JDS (close match)
Barnett over Carwin
Silva over Mir
Overeem over Noguiera

Good idea hood, I like the thought you put into all of your posts.

Let me start by saying this is an awesome idea!
But We should have started the talks on who would be on what seed...
I mean, how come Lesnar is anywhere close to #2?
He just lost a fight miserably and his game was exposed big time in the last 2.

If anything, Overeem. Werdum, Fedor and Junior Dos Santos should be higher, which would change a lot of those fights...
heck, even Pezao should be above Lesnar IMO.

But as this is your picks (and please, do not take the above as criticism, just something we could have started as the base for making the seeds first) , here are my picks:

Cain Velasquez over Mirko CropCop
Brock Lesnar vs Over Brendan Schaub
Fabricio Werdum over Ben Rothwell
Fedor Emilianenko over Roy Nelson
Junior Dos Santo vs over Cole Konrad
Josh Barnett over Shane Carwin
Antonio Silva over Frank Mir
Alistair Overeem over Antonio Nogueira

Yeah, I don't agree with all of Sherdog's rankings. However, it is a reputable source and it has easy to read rankings. For our purposes it will work and our opinions can determine the outcomes. I didn't want to pur my own personal opnions into the rankings so I just used Sherdog.

December 22, 2010  02:14 PM ET

My picks:

- Cain beats Mirko
- Lesnar beats Schaub
- Werdum beats Rothwell
- Fedor beats Roy Nelson
- JDS beats Konrad
- Barnett beats Carwin
- Bigfoot beats Mir
- Overeem beats Minotauro

Great topic.

I think Sherdog sold out to UFC.
There's no reason whatsoever to put Lesnar as #2 after his loss.
And to put him on top of Overeem or Werdum or even Fedor, it is just mind boggling!
To ad Mir above Overeem is despicable!

I'll do this as if there was no brackets. highest seed fights lowest seed in each round.

#1 Cain Velasquez vs #16 Mirko CropCop = Cain
#2 Brock Lesnar vs #15 Brendan Schaub = Brock
#3 Fabricio Werdum vs #14 Ben Rothwell = Werdum
#4 Fedor Emilianenko vs #13 Roy Nelson = Fedor
#5 Junior Dos Santo vs #12 Cole Konrad = JDS
#6 Shane Carwin vs #11 Josh Barnett = Barnett
#7 Frank Mir vs #10 Antonio Silva = Silva
#8 Alistair Overeem vs #9 Antonio Nogueira Overeem

Round 2
#1 Cain Velasquez vs #11 Josh Barnett = Cain
#2 Brock Lesnar vs #10 Antonio Silva = Silva
#3 Fabricio Werdum vs #8 Alistair Overeem = Overeem
#4 Fedor Emelianenko vs #5 Junior Dos Santos = Fedor

I guess I would be in the minority in thinking Mir would beat Silva. Silva just doesn't impress me. Especially in his fight with Werdum. Thats just me though.

January 7, 2011  08:51 AM ET

I would have Cain, Silva, Overeem and Fedor

January 7, 2011  11:07 AM ET

My picks for the 2nd round:

- Cain Velasquez beats Josh Barnett
- Brock Lesnar beats Antonio Silva
- Alistair Overeem beats Fabricio Werdum
- Fedor Emelianenko beats Junior Dos Santos

So the results of round #2 are as follows...
#1 Cain Velasquez over #11 Josh Barnett
# 10 Antonio Silva over #2 Brock Lesnar (It was a tie so I flipped a coin since it appears no one else is contributing to the thread at this point)
#8 Alistair Overeem over # Fabricio Werdum
#4 Fedor Emelianenko over #5 Junior Dos Santos

January 12, 2011  06:23 PM ET

The semi-finals of our hypothetical Heavy Weight Grand Prix are as follows...

#1 Cain Velasques vs #10 Antonio Silva
#4 Fedor Emelianenko vs #8 Alistair Overeem

My picks:
Alistair Overeem over Fedor Emelianenko
Cain Velasquez over Antonio Silva

January 12, 2011  06:46 PM ET

this becomes tricky.
it really (in my mind) can go either way both fights.
Let's say AO wins over Fedor (I want Fedor, but I think AO just peaked while Fedor is starting to look at the end of his career)
And while I do think Cain is the better fighter, I see a real issue for him. Standing up, I don't give him much of a choice. and on the ground, let's not forget Silva is a BJJ BB. However, I do think the youth and speed might play its part and I see him winning for a showdown between both champs...

just to be clear, I am aware Cain is 28 while Silva only 31.
What I meant was Silva having fought 17 fights (almost twice than Cain)
