NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > Two Terrible Drafts By Parcells Hurt Dallas Future
December 26, 2010, 12:37 PM
You look at this defense, you see Spears and Ratliff who were Parcells draftees. Ratliff is just an average tackle after his big payday and Spears has been a bust since day one. Hatcher is a career backup drafted in the third round? James is a rather average run guy who is a liability in the passing game. Ware is basically the only solid defensive player Parcells drafted in Dallas. Ware is actually overpaid being a one dimensional player with only one career int? Newman who is Bills first pick with Dallas is the most overpaid corner in Cowboys history. His career best was four interceptions? Parcells drafted a 25 yr old corner in the top 10 while he could've had a 21 yr old Trufant in the bottom 10? Look at Parcells picks in two years... 04- Julius Jones, Jacob Rogers, Stephen Peterman, Bruce Thorton, Sean Ryan, Nate Jones, Patrick Crayton career backup, Jacque Reeves? These guys were bums. Again in 06- Bobby Carpenter, Athony Fasano, Jason Hatcher- career backup, Skyler Green, Pat Watkins, Montavius Stanley, Pat McQuistin and EJ Whitley? lol Who are these bums? They should've been players of the future? Wasn't that Bill's reputation? Not in Dallas. Where are they now? The only decent ofensive player Parcells got was Witten who we luckily fell to the third round? Parcells is responsible for bringing in Columbo and Davis who are duds in recent years? Yea blame it all on Jerry Jones.

The bright side is they will get a top 5 draft pick in 2011.

December 26, 2010  01:57 PM ET

Yes I do blame it on Jerry Jones. He always had the ultimate say and Parcells had to work within those boundaries. Bill would be allowed to draft 1 of "Bill's type" of players then Jerry would get to draft 2. That's the way it worked.

Ratliff and James are better suited to a 4-3 scheme. Ratliff is too small to play nose tackle for 4 quarters but he has a great motor. James and Ware sometimes get exposed in pass coverage thanks to that goofy-**** 3-4 scheme but these guys are still solid players.

Interior line play on BOTH sides of the ball is what has been lacking in the last 7 drafts with or without Parcells. Safety play has been horrible but it's not so much a talent problem as it is a coaching problem (Campo). The scheme they play where the safety is 30 yards deep just begs the other team to throw over the deep middle.

Say what you want this Defense is pure crap. Regardless of the gaffes by Beuhler and Williams (in the New Orleans game) the defense FAILED in both instances to stop Saints and Cardinals from driving for the win. They let Cardinals convert a 4th and 16!?? Are you kidding me! The Cards and the Redskins (last weeks debacle) are two of the lowest scoring teams in the NFL and we allow nearly 30 from both? Recall the poor defensive play to let the Eagles regain the lead? Watching this team currently put up decent offensive production while the Defense loses games is making me sick!

So do I blame Jerry. Great owner, but one lousy GM. He puts too much "value" in those lower round draft picks. His "Jerryspeak" has a lot of fans fooled, and if you listen to him carefully, he says nothing with a lot of rhetoric.

People think this year is just an aberration too. I don't think so.
Another 5-11 season is upon us. Probably 5-11 for the next 2 years after this one......

Was it Parcells or was it Jerry Jones?

December 26, 2010  09:07 PM ET

Parcells has failed to repeat his success with the Cowboys and Dolphins that he had with the Giants, Patriots and Jets... just when did the guy over in New England leave him?

Was it Parcells or Belichick? When Bill had success he had Belichick with the Giants, Patriots and Jets but Belichick left to New England in 2000? Low and behold Bill has been very ordinary with the Cowboys starting in 03 and then with the Dolphins... Bottom line Bill hasn't done well without Belichick. The numbers show that. Ouch!!! alot of Parcells lovers out there but bottom line without Belichick he hasn't fit the "Bill"?

There isn't a great deal of talent on this team. But thats true about the nfl. As horrible as the team has played, they have lost 8 games by 7 points or less? A good defensive coordinator can make the Cowboys a 10-6 team in no time. Gruden could tutor Romo into the westcoast offense along with Bryant and we got legit excitement in Dallas.

If Belichick was so good back in the day, what was the deal in Cleveland?

They forgot to pass out the camcorders....

...just kidding:)

The scouting and drafting rests solely with the General Manager.

I wouldn't get your hopes up for Gruden. If Jerry don't hire Garrett, he'd have to run off 3 or 4 more Garretts as well, and replace them all. The "value" there is in retaining all of them, including Jason. that's what I'm seeing as of right now, even with his 'madness' from the last game.

Bill benched hometown hero Kosar for Testaverde....Cleveland mob revolts....fans get their way...and Bill is fired. Doh!

I remember when Kosar signed with the Cowboys, and did a jam up job backing up Aikman for a few games. He left for Miami and never was much after that. I wished he'd have stayed in Dallas.

Testeverde sucked goose eggs.

completely agree here. fans think we are back on track when romo comes back or now that garrett is HC. way wrong. this team has some real problems that romo or garrett cannot fix. romo... LOL - he may now win as much as kitna has. this team is on a .500 win road for yrs to come. wrong coach, players with no heart, bad GM, defense... ouch, and STILL no true leader anywhere in site. hate it, but we dallas fans need to be prepared for this type of play for yrs.

December 27, 2010  10:57 AM ET

Sorry guys, I think all of you are way too negative about this team...

Granted, the D sucks...but not as bad as it appears...If you watch the games, the yards are on BIG plays against the secondary. We made a VERY bad decision letting go of Ken Hamlin in favor of Alan Ball. Gerald Sensabaugh has had his moments too, but most of the big big plays this season have been when #20 (Ball) has been involved in the play.

You don't go from a Top 10 D to barely a Top 25 D unless someone or someones are playing bad...

The D can be fixed and almost immediately.

Also....Dallas has lost 8 games this season by 1 score or less....EIGHT! And 4 of them were by a Field Goal. 3 of the 4 were last second Field Goals.

Give me half of that 8 in wins and Dallas is 9-6 headed into Week 17.

Dallas has also been doing this with a backup QB....excuses aside, Dallas can be a 10-11 win team EASILY next season with a healthy Romo, a productive draft (especially since we are going to be a Top 7 pick) and a few free agents on D.

You guys need to relax...the ball did not bounce our way this season but if you watch closely, we are talking tweaks, not major changes, that are needed to get back to the Top 8 teams in the league...

December 27, 2010  11:16 AM ET

Add to your correct observations of the 2004 and 2006 drafts the abysmal 2009 draft and you have the recipe for failure. You CANNOT continually fail to retool your team through the draft and expect continued success.

Bad drafts killed them in the late 80's and early 2000's - and we are on the same course again.

I root for the boys through thick and thin. But Jerry Jones as the GM makes it harder and harder every year.
