So, these guys would then be with our team for two more seasons beyond this year?
That seems odd. They would be sort of a separate faction of the team. Sort of a special set aside; both a part of and apart from the senior class simultaneously.
Ultimately, it feels like a low move. Not truly in line with the stand up and be a man line of thought I would expect to see from a group of Tressel coached young men.
You're right though. It would satisfy the "little devil" inside us all to see them utilize this strangely long suspension to gain an unforeseen advantage.
Who knows how valuable not playing at all next year could be for each one of these five kids in terms of life skills and maturity.
This sounds odd, to say the least, I think it could happen. My only thought would be by the tim they all come back, all the youngins would have an entire season under them, and would the programs be moving on in another direction...The RB's are set, Braxton Miller would be a sophomore, Mewhort would be junior, young recievers would be then juniors...see where Im goin?
Don;t see how this could happen to those that have already redshirted. Makes no sense. Perhaps they're going to request a medical redshirt for "mental anguish" or something?

They all will be watching how head coach Jim Tressel handles this delicate situation because what he ultimately decides will affect the future of these young men whether it be at Ohio State or elsewhere.
Slippery slope indeed.
I might have missed something, but how can the NCAA suspend a player who isn't eligible to play anyway (redshirt)? To serve a suspension, it seems the athlete must first have eligibility to play. If so, the players would have to be eligible for five games in 2011 to serve their suspensions. As that's nearly half the season, I doubt they could redshirt the rest of the season and be granted an extra year of eligibility.

Pryor, Posey and Adams didn't redshirt. I don't think Herron or Thomas did, either, but I don't think they did. If that's the only hurdle, it wouldn't be a problem. However, the whole thing seems kinda shaky to begin with. Need UB with the statutes.
Well you could go completely off the wall and remove them from the team and gray shirt them for next season....
So what happens if they don't play at all, just attend school...that scholly still count and the year still counts?
Sounds to me like teaching someone that you can "get away" with doing wrong...IMHO
I think that if they sit out the Sugar, the NCAA might use that as one of the 5 games and only suspend them for 4....something to think about if you are so inclined

Excerpt from the Columbus Dispatch:
But those suspensions will not take effect until the start of the 2011 season. OSU officials, along with Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany, successfully lobbied the NCAA to reinstate the players for the Sugar Bowl.

Looks like Tressel isn't calling the shots for that program.

This tells me all I need to know about the integrity of that program...
He said athletic director Gene Smith said to him that OSU was trying to push the suspensions back to the 2011 season, and Hoolahan then told Smith how strongly he felt about the players participating in the Sugar Bowl.
Coach Jim Tressel still might levy additional penalties on the players, but according to several sources close to the team, they will not sit out the entire bowl game.

Hepatitus B from the dirty tattoo parlor.
QUOTE(#16):
You really think they won't play in the Sugar?
I wouldn't be surprised at all. Tressel is a man of character, no matter what all you outsiders say!
BTw, to answer the original thought; just a rumor and they'll be in full swing, the entire off-season.
I have a friend that was gray shirted after his freshman year, Im not sure of the specifics, but I do know I played ball with him our freshman year....
As for not playing and returning to play again, A player at Ohio State did that once upon a time named Robert Smith...

Yep...as much as I have admired their program, this is beginning to show that no one is immune to corruption in CFB.
And then if Tressel does NOT sit these guys after the NCAA decided to cave into the Sugar Bowl is beyond me.
Read somewhere that the NCAA does not run the bowls and they can play whoever they want. So then Newton could have sat out the CCG and still played in the NCG? Wow.
IMHO - not trying to be confrontational or start any arguments.... just saying
