NFL  > Dallas Cowboys  > You're Jerry Jones, This is YOUR team, what do you do this offseason?
January 6, 2011, 01:09 PM
If I am Jerry ...
QB - nothing...Romo starts, Kitna has proven he can handle the load and McGee is still a project under work. There are TONS of free agents available that could push Kitna out of a job though, namely Marc Bulger, Brady Quinn and Matt Leinhart.

OLine - I re-sign Doug Free...5 sacks allowed all season long and that was with a slower Kitna for 10 games...I also re-sign Kyle Kosier...he is 31, which is not bad for a lineman now-a-days and he is always consistent...the team has graded him as the best lineman almost every year. I search high and low for some young depth on the OLine in the draft to challenge Davis and Columbo...they are still under contract, so I wouldn't worry about it having to happen this offseason.

RB - Felix still starts, Choice is the #2 and Barber is traded...who we get to fill him can vary based on avail RB's or the draft in late rounds...but, Marion's contract does not justify him being on the team any longer.

WR - Austin and Dez are set...and, Roy Williams is a 12 mil cap hit...so, letting him go to save 5mil in salary is flat out stupid. He does not create waves and fits in the offense...he is not worth the money, but, the cap hit is worse. Ogletree and Hurd get re-inked too.

TE - all set....Witten and Bennett are the main players here with Phillips pushing Bennett for more playing time.

To sum up the offense...depth on oline via the draft in Rounds 2 and beyond and not many wholesale changes due to the fact that we had a Top5 offense and was 3rd in scoring when Garrett took over.

DLine - Ratliff is signed and goin nowhere but we need a solid backup DT big time. WE lost a lot when Ratty got tired and his production showed...a better backup will give him more air and ultimately better production with less time played...Spears should get re-signed and we got to get something better than Bowen and Hatcher....they just suck.

LB - Ware and Spencer are set...Brooking needs to go, he is just getting old and Sean Lee was looking pretty good late in the year...drafting another pass rusher at the top of the draft could be a move to make depending on who goes where. Bradie James is still solid but we can never have enough LB's.

Secondary - this is where is gets interesting...Jenkins regressed but has the talent and can be coached up...Newman I think should move to Free Saftey and we draft Akumara or Peterson at #9 in the draft to replace him, then keep Scandrick in the slot. Alan Ball needs to go to backup Saftey and special teams along with Sensabaugh. Signing a Free Agent saftey should be #1 this offseason...heads should roll and changes need to be made behind the corners, big time.

K - Beuhler needs to be moved back to kickoffs only...putting that ball 5yds deep was huge for Dallas in 2009 and he lead the league by a mile..he is a below average kicker and we need more....I think Kris Brown just got inked, so lets go with him and see, knowing David is still with us and on the roster.

Coaches - Garrett is in, Pasquali should go back to backers or Dline and a new D-Coordinator should come in....it also looks like a new offensive coordinator is coming in, which scares me since Tony has such good rapport with Garrett...the rest of the staff needs to be let go, with exception of the offensive coaches in favor of new blood and new voices.

Playing the NFC West, our own division and the 4th place team in most other loose games means Dallas can EASILY win 10-11 games next season.

I am not thinking our D will be Top 10...but if we can go from 31st to say 15th or so, we will win many more of those tight games that we lost this season.

That is my thinking....your thoughts?

The Cowboys face the NFC West and the AFC East next season. Here is a look at the schedule as reported by the Dallas Morning News;

Home games: NY Giants, Philadelphia, Washington, St. Louis, Seattle , Buffalo, Miami and Detroit.

Road games: NY Giants, Philadelphia, Washington, Arizona, San Francisco , New England, NY Jets, Tampa Bay.

By beating out the Redskins the Cowboys get Tampa Bay and Detroit instead of Minnesota and Carolina. At first glance, 10-6 is very doable. Patriots, J-E-T-S and the Bucs will be tough road tests but NYJ is overrated and beatable. Rams & Lions are on the come - good tests for a team looking for redemption. Seattle, Buffalo, Arizona and Miami - wins (this season not withstanding). Sweep the Skins and split against the G-Men & Iggles...

If I am Jerry Jones...I beat the crap out of myself and jump off the nearest tall building...AFTER I sell the Cowboys franchise to the real me for $1.

QB - Set

RB - Release Barber ... tell Felix he is start in the Pre-Season. If felix cant pass block and is missing assignments by the next to last pre season game .... realese his **** too and go get a RB on the open market to back up Choice.

WR - Austin #1 Bryant #2 - Cut Williams ... he is a waste of a roster spot cause he cant produce. Promote OGletree and Hurd or pickup someone in the mold of Wes Welker (small kid, small school, super fast).

O Line - Since this draft is so crappy on O line ... you go into Free Agency targeting O line. Free is okay, Kosier is okay, Gerode is okay. i bring in people to challenge columbo and Davis.

D line - Olshansky - crap , Ratliff - good but wore down, Spears - hasnt shown me anything his entire career here. I target D line in the top of the draft.

LBs - Ware - awesome, Lee showed me enough to replace Brooking, tell Bradie James he better watch out cause im bringing in people to push replace spencer and possible him.
This is where i make my splash and sign Lamaar Woodley from Pittsburgh.

DBs - This is where i make my second huge splash. I sign both Champ Bailey and Ike Taylor from PIT, along with a safety.

But the biggest thing i do is go out and get Dick LeBeau from pittsburgh as my defensive coordinator so Garret has zero excuses for losing.

January 6, 2011  03:20 PM ET

I would try and trade Miles Austin for 2-1st rd picks or a 1st and 2nd in this years draft. No one wants Roy so you can't trade him for a bag of balls and Dez Bryant is a big talent that needs to see more passes next year. I know the offense is extremely talented with Austin but if you can get 2 top picks for him that would help out with filling some holes on the team.

That's where the smart money would be, but the chances of that happening is about the same if I were to sprout wings and fly like a bird.

LOL.....You think Pittsburgh would let him go, tho? If he's still under contract, they won't allow a lateral move. Now, if he got a promotion, he might would come.

Good idea tho, if they can swing it somehow.

January 6, 2011  03:37 PM ET

Im saying promote him to Assitant HEad Coach and back up the armor truck to his house and start shoveling money.

The best you could get for Miles Austin is either a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

the only person willing to pay that high for WR is Jerry .... rofl.

Not a chance. No way Lebeau would leave at his age for a no-win situation. He tried that in Cincinnati, and Mike Brown was too stupid to stand by him when he has been way more patient with far lesser coaches. Dick Lebeau is an icon here. He'd be just another pawn in Dallas.

You're probably right, but Dallas is not Cincinnati tho. For all of his faults, Jerry wants to win. Mike Brown doesn't care. You can tell that just by him retaining Lewis. Stranger things have happened.

I believe Garrett will be the H/C for awhile, for the fact that he played for Jimmy Johnson, and being an Ivy school grad, surely he retained some of what he learned from Johnson. We're going to find out.

January 6, 2011  04:21 PM ET

The key to garret being successful is hiring a Defensive coordinator and building a defense to Rival those in the AFC (Ravens, Steelers, Jets, Pats). Those teams are going to win every year and make noise in the playoffs every year cause they know how to play defense.

Some good suggestions... I have a thought;

WR - This is the only position I make an exception to the need for O-Line, D-Line or Secondary help... given a choice of "reaching" with the 9th pick for any of those positions, I'd have to take a hard look at WR - and if Justin Blackmon is there I'm very tempted to take him. That kid is going to be GOOD!!!

O Line - I don't mind a FA but we have to get younger there. Gotta draft someone who can play (unlike the recent drafts where we don't seem to be able to judge OL talent.

D-Line - again - let's not reach. If someone is there that belongs in that range of p[icks take him - no more Shante Carver's...

LB & Secondary - I like the idea of bringing in Woodley and/or Taylor but that's going to be cost prohibitive - I'd take either, though.

I'd rather have Kitna than Bulger, Quinn or Leinart

Even if AJ Green were available... I think it would be near impossible to keep three #1 quality WRs happy on the same team. Dallas would just end up being forced to trade one within short time.

Sorry brother...no one will give a 1st and 2nd for any player....not 1 player in the NFL would get that in today's draft....

2ndly, trading Austin is not the answer nor did Austin have a bad year....there are 4 playmakers on that offense and with Austin seeing double teams on almost every play, he STILL put up over 1000yds and had several scores.

This offense is much much better than when we had TO and Witten....now you have Austin, Witten, Dez and Roy Williams has to be accounted for.

January 7, 2011  09:48 AM ET

You are set at WR ... dont mess with it. Fact is you can have a great Offense or a mediocre offense ... doesnt matter. You MUST have great defense to progress in the playoffs. Ravens ... have never had a record setting offense. NE and INDY are exceptions cause they have the 2 greatest QBs in the game today. But both of them have difficult times in the playoffs with their defense letting them down or not getting them the ball back fast enough. Pittsburgh ... great D. JEts ... made the playoffs with a somewhat descent running attack and a great D. Saints ... great O ... the past 2 years Sean Payton realized he will go as far as his defense takes him. Thats why he agreed to lower his paycheck to give some money to his d coordinator. Philly and the Giants lately have had descent defenses and their record shows it. Giants got a superbowl ... and eagles have had a run of like 10 great years. Defense wins championships. Its like Golf ... "Drive for show and putt for dough" .... In the NFL arena ... its Offense for Show and Defense for dough. Offenseive numbers are great and people get famous for them ... but defense is where yo0u make your money in the playoffs.

January 7, 2011  09:52 AM ET

Lets face it, at # 9 in the draft, Dallas needs an INSTANT starter...a playmaker...

There is not a lineman who grades that high and there are 2 VERY good corners that are avail and hopefully one is still there.

Aukamara and Peterson are stout...if either are there, we get them, which makes moving Newman to Saftey in the next season or 2 much much easier.

If both are gone, then you get a stud pass rusher....Spencer has no one to challenge him and he needs to competition.

I know it will not be popular, but I think Dallas should sign Shawne Merriman...he can be signed for nothing and have a incentive-laden contract.

If he flops, we lose nothing but time wasted...if he comes in and gets his swagger back, we could be disgusting with Ware and Shawne.

A solid Defense paired with a Top 10 Offense will win you a title for sure....

Dallas sadly had both in 2007 but didnt have a coach that was in the Top 25....

Now, with Garrett and his being given the ability to put a stamp on each and every player on the team, makes me feel better about next season.

I am telling you guys now, there will not be many changes on Offense...letting go of Columbo or Davis is one thing, but then who you are going to fill them with is another.

Dallas has so much to do on Defense, that I see them tweaking on O a bit to infuse youth and heads will roll on D.

January 7, 2011  09:59 AM ET

Yepper im so on board with you Jeff ... this defense will change a TON if we get someone to compliment Ware from the other side. Thats why i suggested getting Woodley from PIT. Hes the best pass rushing LB in this free agent class. Also We need players in the secondary ... but guys like Ed Reed and Polomalu dont grow on trees.
