NFL  > General NFL  > HGT'S NEW Draft Board Part 1
January 6, 2011, 11:01 PM
If Andrew Luck is so smart how come he screwed up my entire board? Now I have to start all over again. So here's who should pick what, take 2

1 - Carolina - Cam Newton - I joked about Newton's prospects in my first board but when things change you have to recalibrate your thinking. And with no Andrew Luck Cam Newton makes plenty of sense as the the Number One pick of the Panthers. You already told Jimmy Clausen he was roadkill. You can't go back and say just kidding. It's not like they're the Dolphins. If Jimmy Clausen was that horrible last year (and he was) and if he completely lost the locker room (and he did) then you still need a new signal caller. They could try a trade for Kevin Kolb but Philly will drive a hard bargain and Carolina doesn't have enough to trade with. Going back to Newton, I think he was low of other people's draft boards because "the next Peyton Manning" was ahead of him. But Newton compares really well to Michael Vick when he was coming out also the number one overall pick. He's got great mobility and a cannon arm. He'll make a lot of teams nervous and he'll help the run game because they'll have to take somebody out to spy on him. That alone should make him a sensible choice for the Panthers. Plus there's the upside that he eventually turns himself into the Philly version of MV. And that would be worth every penny.

2 - Denver - Mark Ingram* Asterisk because this would probably be a trade down with a another team. But if they can't find a partner I say bite the bullet and draft Ingram here anyway. As I said before the Denver D is gaping black hole. Fixing it really will depend more on free agency and late round draft picks. For now they're better off rounding out their offense and giving Tim Tebow someone to hand off to. If Moreno rebounds, great you have an RB tandem just like rivals KC and Oakland.

3 - Buffalo - Nick Fairley - Panthers taking Newton really forces the Bills hand here. They could grab Patrick Peterson but in the AFC East they face two run oriented teams (Jets and Dolphins) and one pass oriented team (Patriots) With Fairley you have both covered in run stuffing and pass rush.

4 - Cincinnati - Da'Quan Bowers - Doesn't change here. Bowers plus Carlos Bunlap equals a pro bowl duo at DE for the Bengals.

5 - Arizona - AJ Green - Again no change. Rumor has it that the tightfisted Cardinals are thinking of not resigning Larry Fitzgerald after the 2011 season. So that makes this choice a no brainer. Without their passing attack these birds have nothing at all.

6 - Cleveland - Patrick Peterson - I the Browns have targeted Peterson since the final game when Mike Wallace out ran the rest of the Browns' D. Having the next Deion Sanders will put a stop to that.

7 - San Francisco - Ryan Mallet - This pick is probably traded to Philly for Kevin Kolb. They have to get somebody in there. The Niner offense is like this five star meal that's all prepared but there's no to sit down and eat it. The Niners can't stand pat with their QB situation. They tried that in 2010. Insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results.

8 - Tennessee - Blaine Gabbert - Again this is another suitor for Kevin Kolb. But if no trades are made this is who the Titans will be stuck with. It's not ideal but it's either this or go into next season without a true number 1 QB.

Noone is going to pick offense in the top 10 ... im guessing its all defensive players cause they are easier to find and get right.

HGT: well played, as usual. CB or best player available for Cleveland at #6; they could trade down, but with 3 picks in the first 96 the Browns should hold that position; they can't afford to miss on any of their picks, though. The more I think about it, the more I hope that they do not trade down.
