interesting story. As irrational as it seems to the casual fan or outsider I could see how a die-hard fan would convince themselves that this is SOMEHOW related to their recent woes. Like you I somehow think that my actions or superstitious behavior can somehow affect my beloved Dallas Cowboys. Maybe that stems from when I was a wee boy perched in front of the massive wooden TV console fiddling with the rabbit ears to bring in a clearer picture and thinking I could somehow affect the outcome. I hope you can exorcise your demons and get your team working correctly soonest, PM me for some Chicken Feet and my magic eight ball.

I wonder what would have happened if Matt Leinart hadn't gone back for his Sr. year...the Niners would have drafted him instead of Smith. I'll bet Leinart would have been a completely different player had he been given an actual chance, like he would ahve received with the Niners...just a thought.

Well when I used to tell all my football buddies that story we had a good laugh, but as time went along nothing seemed to go right for Smith. I hope he reads this thread and tries to go to the Raiders or Buffalo. Especially Buffalo, that is the birthplace of the Alex Smith I knew and if his career improves in Buffalo then I'd be even more freaked out. There are lots of superstitions in sports, everyone from the head coach to the fans have them like you say. Superstitions like not shaving, favorite clothing, and rituals of certain foods on game day. I told my brother in law that I wouldn't watch any of the S.F. Giants games during the World Series, it seemed that whenever I watched them in the regular season they lost. The one game I got forced into watching during the World Series the Giants lost, things like that fuel superstitions.

At certain 49er sites the fans are putting up the the bizarre rumor of what if the Harbaugh sees something in Alex Smith and wants to retain him as a starter? This will only happen if they feel they need a third string QB and can sign him for the cost of a tackling dummy. Save your money and invest in a shut down cornerback, draft or sign a free agent WR that is over 6'3", you have one QB signed for next year, David Carr, draft a franchise QB either this year or next.

More funny superstitious ****. I like the SF Giants piece, clearly your eyes on the set influence what goes on in the Park. Again, from where you sit, you watched, they lost. Clear causal relationship, one leads to the other. Not sure if you recall the days in the 70's and 80's when Dallas wore the Dark Blue jerseys, quite often they lost and players and fans alike were convinced it was the dark blue jerseys. Rest of the story.....

Tex Shramm decides that Dallas will wear white at home (it is contrary to most teams and still is today) and let the visiting teams wear their colored jerseys in Dallas. Tex's reasoning was the visiting team would be more colorful and Dallas Fans could see all the other colors from the visiting teams. This way rather than Dark Blue for Dallas all year and white for all visiting teams (two colors) Dallas fans would see white and eight other colors. Still with me??

Well most teams win at home and Dallas did a lot of winning in that era so lots of wins in the White jersey, most home teams wear Colored jersey so Dallas is generally in white on the road too, wins or losses be damned no one notices. Well NFC East div rivals make Dallas wear the Dark Blue on the road cuz they can and no surprise Dallas loses to NFC East rivals on the road like most teams lose to Div Rivals on the road and Voila! The superstition that the Dark Blue jerseys make you lose is born.

SF now seems to have their coaching staff all lined up. I think for now their hands are tied as far as signing free agent QB's or trading for them, with the whole owners/players arbitration going on. I guess nothing will happen until after the Super Bowl and then that way this dispute can be moved to the front page for the following months. The fans need to be more informed as to What and Why they are disagreeing on. Maybe the fans should settle this dispute. I for one have no problem with the owners wanting to put a cap on the draft salaries and signing bonuses. There are way to many underachievers and busts, I have no idea why players would disagree to this . If you are drafted by a team you play for that team, if don't want to play for them then you don't play in the NFL period. The only way you get back in is if another team wants to trade for you. Everyone seems to want a 18 game season and 2 pre season games. So what's the problem?

Alex was not the first choice of the 49er faithful. Most wanted the guy from Redding and graduated from Cal, Rodgers, but the Niner Owners, with their new coach, Nolan, picked a Utah Grad Smith. Previously, the owner fired a favorite coach, Mariucci, and forced out a great qb, Garcia, from the team (by not providing incentives in his contract). Smith, then became the owner's, York's, boy to the eyes of niner fans. The next year the niners abandon the west coast offense and decided to build a new stadium in Santa Clara. Alex became the York poster boy and the niner faithful kept hearing the whining of Smith with the yearly changing of o.c. To be honest, seeing Rodgers success in Green Bay only added to the hostility toward Smith and, even today, the faithful still have deep resentment of the York's for ruining the team.

That Smith was only, at best, a Spurrier or, worse, a Steve Deburg, didn't help. Smith did collect a contract for a number 1 pick in 2005, an increase in 2008 and his resigning was for $8 M for three years, not much for a starting qb this off season. Expectations for Smith were out of line with his ability and resume.

You are being completely unfair. It doesn't matter what your opinion is on who wanted Rodgers over Smith. Smith has been anything but a whiner since being with the team. He has gone through so many ups and downs including coordinators and head coaches, players he has competed with and shoulder injuries. Yet he has remained loyal to the team and even to a reduced pay in order to remain with the team. I have been critical of his play myself. And also feel like he has shown the max of his abiliities. But your insane blabber about him is senseless and full of spite. If Harbaugh decides to go with Kaepernick and benches Smith, it will be because he feels its best for the team. Not because he thinks Smith is not worthy.

I've never been so torn on a decision. Ever since watching highlights from Nevada on youtube after they drafted him, I have been wanting to see what he could do in the NFL. But I hate it so bad for Smith to go out like this after playing so well. I don't want to say goodbye to Smith just yet.
