It's very hard to decide these things.
I personally pick Jose Aldo as fighter of the year.
I think the problem with Werdum (and I'm not saying Sherdog are right or wrong here) is that he only fought once in 2010. Sure, it was a huge win, but still only one fight the entire year.
And look at things this way... if you look just at Strikeforce fighters, I would pick Nick Diaz as their 2010 fighter. A KO over Zaromskis (won the WW belt), submission over Sakurai in Japan, and then a successful title defense against KJ Noons.
The problem with Velasquez is that Minotauro is over the hill.
And the problem with Frankie is that the first win over BJ was a "win". Plus the fight with Maynard was already in 2011, shouldn't count.
While I can agree with what you say, we both know why they selected Frankie & Cain.
Frankie for beating BJ
Cain for beating Lesnar
And that is why I think this is UFC-centric .
If they would have selected other people, I would accept. but as it is, come on, we both have to accept they are biased.
exactly. If so, I would have put Mayhem Miller (just to rival Nick) :)
After all, he did beat Saku :)

I am physically scared every team Sakuraba gets back into a ring.
I mean, did you see his fight at Dynamite? His ear was detaching from his skull!

well, he couldn't possibly be any uglier.
And besides, i think he can't feel a thing anyway...
But going back to Sherdog, I don't agree one bit that they are pro UFC biased.
If anything, out of the top MMA websites, they're the least pro UFC.
They cover organizations no other MMA website does.
They chose Misaki vs Santiago II as "Fight of the Year" in 2010, over other fights such as Anderson Silva vs Chael Sonen (and they've been taking heat for that choice).
Their "KO of the Year" and "Submission of the Year" choices were also outside of the UFC.
If you look at the 2010 awards on other websites you'll most likely see non UFC organizations simply ignored. Sherdog never does that.
while I agree they cover other sites, most their editorials are pro-UFC.
You see it also on their rankings (Lesnar still #2?)
And let's not forget that the FotY was fans voting.
But come on. Just because they cover other promotions is no excuse. Come on now, don't you agree that picking Cain Velasquez and Frankie Edgar only smells a bit strange?
Lesnar still #2 doesn't make much sense, that I agree with... regardless of the way you, me or they do rankings (wink wink) :)
Especially because of the way he lost.
Five Ounces of Pain and MMA Fighting both picked Velasquez as Fighter of the Year.
I didn't know that Sherdog's FOTY was voted by fans, though.
By the way, I was the only guy on Sports Nickel to have chosen a non UFC fighter as FOTY for 2010.
I picked Jose Aldo.
Clouis picked George Sotiropoulous.
Robert Menn picked Cain Velasquez.
David Snipes chose Frankie Edgar.
I wouldn't mind FotY going for Cain. He's been great. Can't blame it.
But come on. Only him & Frankie?
Like you said, add Aldo.
Add Badder (wins over Jardine & lil'Nog), Bones (Vera & Matyushenko) or Nick Diaz like you mentioned... just to add some names.
But if the name of the game is who beat whom, then Cain beating lesnar should have NEVER been counted about Werdum beating Fedor or Frankie BJ.
I agree there should be more names on the list but not everybody looks at Fedor as an elite fighter, too many tough fighters having tougher roads last year competing in MMA.
Roni, he did get submission of the year and upset of the year! Come on it's not like Werdum got snubbed like "Saving Private Ryan" did when "Shakespeare in Love" won the Oscar for movie of the year!

that's the point.
If his win was upset of the year and sub of the year, how come when it comes to fighter of the year?
And Uno, i know you don't think he's elite. I was actually talking to real MMA fans, not newcomers who knows only UFC :) (ouch!) :P

I am sorry if your one of the few to think that he is an actual "elite fighter" that Sherdog didnt even recognize Werdem beating Fedor but yet Cain was credited for beating Lesnar and Frankie beating Penn. Let me guess according to your books Sherdog only know the ufc as well. It must suck being lonely on a deserted island with no one to talk to about Fedors current ???greatness??? as a fighter lol.

just kidding by the way!
No your not lol

No your right Frankie beating Penn twice or Cain destroying Lesnar has nothing on Fedor beating Brett Rogers lol

1st off he is not alone with thinking that the Sherdog has gone 95% UFC biased.
2nd off Cain beating Lesnar was a good win for Cain but are you really buying into the HYPE about how good Lesnar was?
