NCAAF  > General NCAAF  > Texas and ESPN TV Deal
January 19, 2011, 06:14 PM
So ESPN is forking out $300 million to the University of Texas to broadcast 1 football game and 8 basketball games a year for 20 years on a station devoted entirely to University of Texas sports. This will mean $12.5 million a year on top of the $15 million or so they get from the Big 12 which is already more then the rest of the league. How long until the Big 12 falls apart?

I was wondering how long it would take for Texas to go independent, but with this sweet deal, it's going to take the other teams of the Big 12 kicking them out. They probably should have done so last spring and invited TCU, Boise St., and someone else to join them.

Big 12 needs TX.

January 19, 2011  06:24 PM ET

I believe the Big 12 has already fallen apart, at least partially.

I think we are now calling them the CDS - now that Nebraska has joined the CUN, and Colorado has joined the Pac 12.

Probably so, but TX doesn't need them.

With all those millions of $, ESPN type publicity (that can turn Joe Blow Average University into Super Powerhouse U overnight), and all those great recruits right in their own backyard - TX might as well go independent.

This is ridiculous. If it were a conference channel then I would understand. But Texas does not need a channel devoted to athletics. The only really important sports to people is football and basketball. What are they gonna do, show a30 minute highlight of a swim meet a ut player was in?

this was my initial thought but think about it, why would Texas leave the Big 12 if they're allowed to get the biggest piece of that pie - $15 million - on top of the $12.5 million ESPN is going to pay them? Unless they think they can sign a bigger TV contract on their own, it wouldn't pay for them to go independent. they're getting the cake and eating it too.

Lol.

He may want to consider cancelling the home games for a while. Their best home wins in 2010 were vs Rice and FAU (both finished 4-8).
But, at least the FAU game was a blowout!

I see what you're getting at, but who would schedule an independent Texas? A&M, sure. But beyond that? Most of the really strong teams are in 12 team conferences with limited out of conference games--most of whom want to schedule patsies, or who already have traditional out of conference rivals to play. It might take a while before they work their way back from paying the little sisters of the poor to play them if they go independent. That's not the kind of situation ESPN is paying to broadcast...

Just another nail in the Big XII(10) coffin....just a matter of time and where everyone will go.

January 19, 2011  11:12 PM ET

This won't change much from a football perspective. TX and Big 12 still are under contract with ABC and Fox (who subcontracts with ESPN and Versus) for televised broadcasts. It's a very substandard deal IMO which hurts the lesser schools in the conference. For details: http://tinyurl.com/4rxraxs

For example the Univ. of Missouri resides in a huge TV market but often gets slighted with regards to football available on TV... and the revenue that comes with it. Here's a good article on the subject from a Missouri perspective: http://tinyurl.com/4hpaawu

1 extra game on ESPN is good news for TX fans because ESPN is a sports programming network. ABC and Fox, on the other hand, are entertainment networks and TX fans know all too well how frustrating it can be to search for football only to find America's Funniest Home Videos in the Saturday afternoon time slot.

The real frustration is knowing that AFV has as many bloopers as the UF offense does...

Fixed it for ya, Doc.

The proposed realignment with the Pac 10 was doomed from the start. Larry Scott wanted schools to relinquish rights to 3rd tier games as well as streaming broadcasts. In other words he didn't offer anything better than the existing Big 12 TV arrangements. TX, OU, et al were smart to say no. Wherever we end up I hope we stay together.

We'll see how this works out. Texas is pretty big in baseball, volleyball, swimming, etc., but I don't know what kind of viewership those sports will generate. As to their piece of the Big XII(10) pie, network contract is split 50% equally, 50% pro-rated on the number of games telecast. If we're gonna continue to get a larger piece of that pie, Mack better ****in' figure out how to start winning games again.

Yah, coming of a losing season this does seem a bit wierd.
