here is an idea i have been mulling over, would like some other opinions on it: what about having a points system in the nhl where a team gets:

3 points for a victory over a team with more points than them
2 points for a victory over a team with an equal number of points than them
1 point for a victory over a team with less points than them
(The first game of the season would mean the winner of that game would get 2 points as both teams start at 0).

i think it would mean a more balanced scheule would have to be implemented.
the 'loser' point would have to go.
i'm not sure if such a system has been done in other leagues.
i'm sure there are disadvantages to awarding points in this manner and would like to hear of them.

A flaw with this idea.
What if team A has played 3 more games then team B when they meet?
The main point you mentioned is the unbalanced schedule.Team A could have 70 points in their division,and have a 20 point cushion on the 2nd place team ,because that division is weak.
Team B could have 68 points in their division,but the 2nd place team has 67.3rd 65 and so on from a tougher division.

Go back to old school hockey-2 points for a win,1 point for a tie.Screw overtime,and the shootout.

i knew there was a flaw, thanks! i just feel there has to be a way to make the regular season games more meaningful, and maybe a different points system is a way. less games would be welcome too. but i agree, 2=win, 1=tie. i grew up with that!
