CHICAGO - The United States has cancelled its scheduled friendly against Egypt in Cairo on February 9 due to the violent anti-government protests erupting in the North African country, the U.S. Soccer Federation announced Monday.

Demonstrations that began Tuesday demanding the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak have left at least 125 dead, reports said.

"We were excited about the opportunity to play against Egypt, but due to the current situation all parties agreed it was best to cancel the match," U.S. Soccer President Sunil Gulati said in a release. "We appreciate the efforts of the Egyptian Football Association and the U.S. State Department as we worked through this situation."

Due to the cancellation, the United States will not play on the international fixture date. The match was supposed to be its second of the year, having drawn 1-1 with Chile using a very inexperienced lineup on January 22 in Los Angeles.

Its next matches will be against Argentina on March 26 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and three days later against Paraguay in Nashville, Tennessee.
