TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras - Former Millonarios, Chicago Fire and New York Red Bulls coach Juan Carlos Osorio has been designated the new manager of Honduras, put in charge of the Catrachos 10 days after they won the Copa Centroamericana under Juan de Dios Castillo.

Osorio still must negotiate an exit as manager with Once Caldas in Colombia - where he still has six months remaining on his contract, the Honduran federation said in a release on its Web site. Looking for a second straight trip to the World Cup, the Honduran federation also called Osorio "ideal to lead (us) to Brazil 2014."

Castillo - or "Cuate", who took over after Reinaldo Rueda resigned following Honduras' three-loss, first-round exit from South Africa this past summer, was installed as the interim coach in August and led the Catrachos to their first Central American championship since 1995.

The 48-year-old Osorio began his coaching career as assistant as the U.S. second-division Staten Island Vipers in 1998, had later assistant positions with New York-New Jersey MetroStars and Manchester City before getting his first managerial position with Millonarios in 2006. He returned to the United States in 2007 with Chicago and then the renamed New York Red Bulls in 2008.

He took over at Once Caldas in 2010 and promptly led it to its four league title in its history.

"We did an analysis and at the event concluded that the ideal person to manage Honduras on the path to Brazil 2014 is Juan Carlos Osorio," said Rafael Callejas Ferrari, head of the Honduran federation's national team committee. "He fulfilled all the requirements and the decision was unanimous."

Osorio is not expected to be available to take over the team until February 15, leaving Honduran under-20 national team coach Javier Padilla and Castillo assistant Reynaldo Clavasquin to manage the side in its scheduled friendly against Ecuador on Wednesday in La Ceiba, Honduras.
