MMA  > General MMA  > Hey Guys, been a long time

Hey guys I know I havent been on here in about 4 months (crappy work hours, trying to take care of a 1 yr old and losing some weight kills my free time) but I just wrote something for a site my friend contributes to and want you guys to check it out.

It is a site thats meant for the bay area sport teams (my friend writes about the sharks) and I told them they should have an MMA section since we live in a hot spot for it (Strikeforce based in San Jose and having a lot of events at the Shark Tank, AKA in San Jose, and some big name guys from the area like the Diaz brothers and Cain Velasquez) and they told me to write something up for them, so I did. Its not very broad in what I talked about and I had to skip over a lot of things because I did try to make it BayArea centric for the site but I gave my opinions and am looking for some of them to stir up debates.

Feel free to check it out and leave comments on things you agree with, disagree with, or opinions of your own - on their site - because I told them I could get more people to the site and probably get more comments on my blog than any of the others that are up there lol. I am open to negative criticism so be honest and lets get some discussions going.

Lol I just saw the other post that said the winner gets gsp next. Gsp would just dry hump him to another victory if penn faces him again. At least then I can stop listening to penn fans whining about grease gate.

I am just back from the weekend break with my kids & nirces.

I basically agree with all you wrote. the only comment i could have made was that I agree with Jim on BJP winning the fight against Fitch.

Also it is worth note that while you pointed our Frankie is a wrestler, he almost did not use it against BJ... and this may be exactly what won him the belt.

Im curious, why do you guys think Penn will beat Fitch?

BJ Penn really hasn't impressed me much lately. and maybe it's because of his recent problems facing good wrestlers. To me this is gonna be a snooze fest of Jon Fitch takedowns. And if this is the route the future of MMA is gonna take by allowing these guys to win fights based on their takedown ability then MMA is in trouble.

I for one am sick of it. If a fighter is able to take someone down and REALLY aplly a GnP then I'm all for it. But not when some of these guys don't take any chances.

Penn has a major advantage standing. His boxing is crisp and technical, and he has serious power. Fitch is mediocre on the feet. People keep saying Fitch will just take Penn down easily and grind him out, but they fail to realize Penn has some of the best TDD in the sport. Hughes had major trouble taking Penn down. GSP had a lot of trouble taking him down. In the 2nd fight there was about 2 mins left in round 2 before GSP got a takedown. Fitch does not have the speed of a GSP or Edgar and does not have the transitions of those two guys. I see Penn either hurting Fitch standing and finishing the fight or racking up points standing and avoiding takedowns and winning the 1st two rounds.

I can accept that. For me I just cant go against a guy who has won 21 of 22 fights with the lone loss to the best WW ever, especially when his opponent only has 2 WW in many forays into the division (and his 2nd against a past his prime Hughes). Until someone other than GSP beats Fitch I will always pick him to win a fight.

I vote for BJ for a number of reasons.

While you are right he didn't have much success in the past, look who he fought. GSP and Hughes. The uncontested 2 best guys at that time.

I also add one more point that he didn't gain weight properly, and he paid dearly for it. He had no gas, he was slow, lackluster appearances...

Now on the other hand, he just lost his "invincibility" at LW, and he went up in weight properly. As this is his second fight at this weight class, I think he will be better this time around.

I think his standup game greatly improved (since his loss to Frankie, he was training with none less than Mayweather Sr), and he reportedly has been training with Matt Hughes on his grappling/wrestling.

And even if Fitch takes him on the ground, I do think that he is more dangerous than most guys Fitch fought against. His elasticity is unparalleled and he can submit anyone at any given time.

The above and the fact that I absolutely hate the guy (thus he wins to piss me off), makes me pick BJ to win this fight.
My only consolation is that he won't get to fight GSP for the belt :)

So he has been training with the guy he just fought? Amusing. The thing with his BJJ is that is all we ever hear about with him but I cannot remember the last time he used it in a fight, he loves to box now. I hate him too but have stopped rooting against him or rooting for him to lose because I picked him to lose in every fight (talking before the 2 Edgar fights) and he always kicked the crap out of the guys I chose to finally be the ones to beat him. Then when I stopped paying attention, the 2 Edgar fights were the first Penn ones I havent watched in a long time, he finally loses lol

I dunno. And I kind of see the point.

And IMO it speaks volume on how much he applies himself.

Training with Mayweather Sr on his stand up will greatly improve his already good boxing.

And speak all you want about hughes, he was one of the most dominant grapplers in MMA. He might not be as strong as before, and maybe even lost a step. but if he gets hold of anyone, he is still dangerous. so in this sense, i do think BJ could learn a lot on Defense.
