Why would you listen to a twit like Mel Kiper? As much as I object to the 49ers possibly taking on Alex Smith for another 1-2 years his stats were comparable to Carson Palmers last year, true Palmer played in a tougher division. Has David Carr sunk so low as to not even be considered? At #7 SF will take the best available player at CB or DE, they are not hurting that bad at LB so no need to take Von Miller. Even if the CBA is signed before the draft and the 49ers get a QB in free agency they will still need to draft a QB. I think Harbaugh will even take a big receiving TE as productive as Delanie Walker has been he is just to small, Harbaugh likes to use 2 TE's in his offense, they will even go after a RB in the 3rd or 4th rounds. I know who I'd like to see them take but like many others I'm waiting for the CBA to be settled.
I havent even looked at any Mel Kiper mock drafts. I simply used his name in the title of the blog as in I was being him for a day making my predictions. His name is easily the most well recognized of any "draft experts". The 2 names I hear the most for them taking at #7 are Von Miller and Robert Quinn. I used Miller as the one I think they will take because I really do think that if he is still there they will take him. He had a great combine, which while I think it is a joke and I would not use it to decide who I draft most teams do, and solidified himself as a top 5-10 pick. The Niners are switching to the 3-4 from the 4-3 so getting a guy like Quinn or Miller who could play both isnt a big deal instead of a guy who is solely a DE. Also, they will look for someone to replace Manny Lawson who was supposed to be their big edge rusher when they drafted him and he hasnt done anything.

Well it's good to have a 49er fan around, especially one from the Bay Area. With Quinn do we really know what we are getting except a big body that hasn't played for a year and came into the draft as a Junior? Or are we going to get another 1st round draft choice North Carolina Slacker like Manny Lawson who underachieved until his contract year and that was only mediocre?. I haven't been able to see Von Miller play that much, saw him at the Combine and not that overly impressed. The one game Akeem Ayers had that impressed me and a lot of people was when UCLA beat Texas last year and he took over that game. Dante Moch (Nevada) had a better combine, in that he made a name for himself. I think Harbaugh is keeping his eye open for LB's he can get in day 2 of the draft. I think his first two picks will be a shut down corner and a QB. That is unless they can fulfill those needs in free agency. Nnamdi Asomugha went to Cal, played at Oakland, why move when you can commute across the bay?

Mel Kiper has his fans but I prefer to get my draft info from Gil Brandt. Comparing Alex smith to Carson Palmer is really a stretch.
Just that their QB rating last season was about the same. Question is will Palmer run towards his old coach Pete Carroll?

There aren't that many left.

Only if he is guaranteed to win the starting job.
QUOTE(#5):
lol,....i laff at kiper and mcshay at every draft [on espn], these 2 guys hate each other !....i watched kiper ''flip-out'' at todd mcshay at last years draft [live/on espn], it was must-see tv!,......these draft-gurus might get half of the top-10 correct at best, ....lol.
Answer me this is, does Rich Eisen( on the NFL network) know anything about football or is he just there for comic relief?
Does ESPN even allow Kiper and McShay sit at the same table for fear that they will throw hot coffee on one another?
I like the suspense of the NFL draft, I think that this is something that should be moved around to every teams home town and not just centered in NY, and while they are at it move the Combine around.

Hasselbeck is leaving, who does he have to compete against?

Palmer looked less than stellar at Cincy last season throwing to T.O. and Cinco. He won't have the same quality WR's if he ends up at Seattle.

Kiper and McShay are friendly rivals and they would toss friendly barbs at each other. I do agree that the NFL should realize that New York is not the center of the pro football universe and should be moved around from city to city.

I have the same fears about Quinn and see Manny Lawson in him too. I would rather have Miller than Quinn who at least got 27 sacks the last 2 years so there is footage of him making plays. But I agree with you and want a DB at #7 more than a OLB/DE. The draft is so deep at DL/LB that they can get a good one in the 2nd and id like them go take a QB in the 3rd like Ponder, Dalton, or Kaepernic. But if qbs are flying off the board and they might be gone by the 3rd then I could live with them reaching a little for Ponder in the 2nd. I think Harbaugh can do real good things with Ponder.

friendly rivalry or genuine dislike, i do like watching mel lose his cool and start being a dick to mcshay lol

Mel doesn't like his opinions challenged.
The 49ers have 5 picks in the first 4 rounds and 7 picks 5-7th rounds. Areas they are hurting at- QB, CB, DE, OLB, FB.
Would it be so bad if they traded say a 4th or even a 3rd for Jimmy Clausen? Panthers think he is the plage and will more than likely use their 1st or 2nd on a QB this year.
He was tossed into an impossible situation last season and I think unfairly judged. I think Harbaugh would LOVE to groom this kid and is a perfect fit for the west cost system he will run.

maybe they should trade the 7 picks in the 5th-7th rounds for the Cowboys 1st and 3rd (maybe 1st and 2nd). Jerry Jones is stupid enough to make that trade.

I don't think they can trade compensatory draft picks.
