NFL  > New York Jets  > brett favre is not the problem (sorta)

i don't think brett favre is completely the problem for the jets. he is handcuffed by an unimaginative offensive scheme and terrible situational coaching. this offense was built to be conservative - run by either chad pennington and his pea shooter arm, or kellen clemens, whom they have no real confidence in, in order to avoid costly mistakes. leon washington is underutilized as a weapon, and they have no impact deep threat wr. favre makes his mistakes because receivers simply can't get open, and he just doesn't believe in throwing it away.

look now at pennington - he's in a cleverly thought up offense that successfully masks his faults. add to this a receiver like ted ginn jr. who can get downfield faster than any jet wr and the threat is at least there, even if it's not the first option, it has to be covered.

mangini is not an offensive minded coach, he was raised on the defensive side of the ball. you would think that schottenheimer, the son of martyball, would be a little bit more creative with his offense. but alas, that is not the case. if mangini is to remain the coach, he needs to seriously consider a new o-coordinator, or else he will be looking for a job next season
