NFL  > General NFL  > Cam Newton: To say racism is not part of everyday life would be naive...but is it at play in the draft?

Here us a quote from Nolan Nawrocki from pro-football weekly:
"Very disingenuous ??? has a fake smile, comes off as very scripted and has a selfish, me-first makeup. Always knows where the cameras are and plays to them. Has an enormous ego with a sense of entitlement that continually invites trouble and makes him believe he is above the law ??? does not command respect from teammates and always will struggle to win a locker room. Only a one-year producer. Lacks accountability, focus and trustworthiness ??? is not punctual, seeks shortcuts and sets a bad example. Immature and has had issues with authority. Not dependable." end quote

Most of those assessment would be hard to make on our friends and family let alone by someone who has never meet or interviewed Mr. Newton.(according to reports the writer has never talked to Newton)
All of the "character descriptions" appear to be just personal opinions and not based on any facts.
Mr. Nawrocki should of had examples and quotes from witnesses on every character flaw he described, that would of made him more believable.
The article as written (the language) sounds like a hit piece.
Can we agree on that?
I don't think racism is a factor in all the negative talk about Can Newton, his dad sort of made the bed Cam has to lay in.
Cam needs to deal with it and move on.
He should be a top 5 pick, period!

All the warning flags about his personality cannot be ignored, he is already claiming that he is an icon, I doubt he knows what an icon is, his head has probably gotten even bigger since he was given $1 million by UnderArmor, right out of college. Every QB that is drafted in the Top 10 must come to terms with one glaring fact and that is that the team they are going to is not a very good team. So how will that person adjust? Will they whine and whine and thus stir up resentment with fellow players or will he quickly assume that the team he is drafted by has no desire to win and thus play to that teams lower standards.

I think part of the problem is perception. Cam is perceived to be a very risky pick in the draft. His skill set is similar to Vince Young and Jamarcus Russell. But his name is Cam Newton. And if you do your homework without a slanted view on his politics, you will either believe that he can help you. Or feel like he cannot help you. For whatever reason, when there are two qbs at the top of the draft that are close. When taken, one flames out and the other sky rockets. I like Cam personally. I know that I would sit him and let him learn. He needs some work. And he needs to prove that he is going to show up everyday. He is far from a finished product. So I think it is how you feel about him and what you think he can do.

As far as the racism is concerned. I feel like there is some out there. Black quarterbacks have started 3 Super Bowls and won 1. So there is a proving ground there. Some of it is some guys don't want an athlete at the qb position. They want a quarterback at the quarterback position.

Just as with the rest of the country, racism is still there. Just as with the rest of the country, it's very slowly getting better, but it is still an issue. And unfortunately, just as with the rest of the country, I think it always will be.

That said, I don't think it's as much of an issue in the Cam Newton scenario as are the way he projects himself and his NCAA drama.

Over 90% of all paying customers in every sport imaginable are white people. They pay the bills. Period. So even if ther was any truth to this story, which there probably isn't, it would be well justified.

If you would, please clarify for me. Are you saying that it would be okay for NFL teams to have a racial bias against Cam Newton because the 90% of paying customers are white? Where is the justice in that? That is a very slippery slope upon which to rest your logic.

QUOTE(#17):

Your eyeballs. Can you not see? Every sporting venue of every sport is virtually an all white party, nearly without exception. So it is hardly considered unreasonable that these white people would like to see some return on their investment. Especially considering that the NFL is well represented at every other position with black atheletes anyway.

Don't be a phallic symbol. I don't see people in terms of color. Sounds to me like you are the racist....

QUOTE(#19):

Racist? Was that supposed to some sort of compliment? Sure sounded that way to me. If you truly believe that all white people do not see color, then you do not know them at all.

I wasn't speaking for all white people. I was speaking for myself. Did I hit a nerve or something? I simply asked for the source of your information so I could read it for myself and form my own opinion.

I understand. But all you have to do is participate in any of these sporting events and you could clearly see for yourself. It hardly requires a scientific poll

I do particpate in many sporting events. I would still like to see some cold hard numbers and an article or several from a reputable source(s) before spouting off any generalizations.

Really? You start throwing around numbers, sport, you better be prepared to back 'em up. Otherwise you come off sounding like one of those idiot neocon artists on Fox who just make **** up and shout down anyone demanding they put their money where their fat mouths are.

*ahem*

I thought we were using "Sparky" instead of "Sport"? No?
