NFL  > Carolina Panthers  > Harry Potter and the Quarterback Quandry

So. I don't think it's a secret to anybody that there's a situation in Carolina: what to do about the quarterback position.

The options on the table right now are: start Matt Moore again, start Jimmy Clausen again, draft Gabbert/Newton 1st overall, or draft one of the quarterbacks who falls into Round 2.

Personally, I think they should avoid reaching for Gabbert or Newton, since they are both spread quarterbacks and there's no reason Carolina should stop running the pro offense with their punishing halfbacks in DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart. They should give Moore and Clausen another season for one of them to hopefully emerge, and if not, get their quarterback next year.

Your thoughts?

I think Clausen was pushed into an impossible situation last year. No mentorship, no reliable WR, a line is that ONLY good at run blocking, and from what I saw, horrible play calling. Its crazy but I think they should take AJ Green #1, OL #2, and one of the speed project WR #3, and hopefully Shockey has something left in the tank and can stay healthy. Give the kid a fair shake b4 he is given up on. If not trade him to the 49ers so Harbaugh can properly groom him into a ProBowl QB.

Hm. I hadn't really thought of taking a wide receiver first overall, but that's actually a pretty solid idea. I was thinking D-line.

I think that there was just terrible coaching in Carolina. There was just no good reason for Delhomme, Moore, and Clausen to throw so, so many interceptions if they were coached well and the playcalling was good. John Fox's staff just didn't get it done.

yes Charlie, but lately he's not WINNING!!!...lmao

I didn't say John Fox himself. I said his staff. I just think that there's a reason all three of those guys threw so many picks, and it wasn't just them being terrible at football.

I think Fox is a good coach but he just got bored in Carolina. Last couple seasons he had no drive and just seemed to Forrest Gump his way through the seasons. Their major downfall was signing Delhomme signing a huge contract and he got complacent. Steve Smith and Mohammed
made him look much better than he really was.

I hope Fox finds his drive again in Denver. They have pretty damn solid offensive personnel. They just need a defense.

Taking a wide receiver first overall would make sense for Carolina, but I think they should try to trade down in the first round. With Tennessee or someone else who is desperate for a quarterback, and try to poach a 1st and 2nd rounder out of it. The Titans seem like the best team to try to bait with that draft pick.

Don't even go there.

Brett Favre is a free agent and better than anyone available in the draft. He has at least two more good years left and would provide instant leadership.

Last year wasn't very "good". I think there are plenty of rookies that could throw 11 TDs and 19 Ints with a 69.9 rating. He definitely should have hung up the cleats after his stellar 2009 season (despite the soul-crushing pick to end the NFC title game)

He wanted to go out like Elway, but that just isn't going to happen.

And the Panthers receivers and line will give him BETTER numbers!?

April 9, 2011  06:23 PM ET

Look. Throwing to the Vikings receiving corps beats throwing to the Carolina receivers any day. More accurately, the receiveR, since Steve Smith is the only passable receiver on the entire team. Let's face it, Minnesota is actually a pretty damn good place to play quarterback. Favre's just getting old.

You also have to remember that Rice was out pretty much all season, Harvin only played about, what.. 1 ever 3-4 games due to migranes, few games with a crying Moss about loving the Pats, the line didnt block well at all. Yes Favre got old but if he would have had the same healthy WRs and OL that he had the year before we would not be having the "go home" conversation about Brett.

Even saying that... he was beatin on WAAAY too much last year to think about comming back this year. I only think he needs to come back is if a team like the Pats, Colts, Saints or any other sure fire team to go deep into they playoffs and contend for the SB looses their starting QB for the year.

I guess I just want Brett to go out before he becomes just pitiful to watch. I got blasted with that when I watched him on the Jets, and a little bit last year.. I don't want him to leave a pathetic, beaten shell of what he once was.

The word is that one of the few positives of this lock-out is that Moore has more time to re-hab the shoulder before showing it off to his new coach. With his starting O-Line and backfield intact, he may not be franchise but he is adequate. {He had neither last year.} I don't have any idea who sees #1 value in any pick of this draft, but it would be really nice to get more picks, particularly if they set somewhere between #3, 4, or 5, all of whom want that franchise QB. In that area, the Panthers can pick up the left-over of Green, Peterson, or Darius (possibly the "other" QB, be it Newton or Gabbert). Two players I would like to see in Charlotte are Carolina bargains -- Austin and Little. I'm also interested in Mike Coughlin, the back-up QB at Boise State: from his pro-day, some said he has the tools that could put him in the same class as another back-up QB M.C. who seems to be playing reasonably well for KC; his lack of stats take him off most draft boards altogether and I would hate to see Belicheck steal another.
