NFL  > General NFL  > If You Had The Power, What Would You Change?

Just... what would you add / take away from the NFL, if you could? What rules would you change? Add? I don't know, there are definitely a few things I would do if I were in charge.

- Live Punts.
Like how kickoffs can be recovered after 10 yards, only up it to 40 yards. Or within the 5 yard line, if there's a punt within 40 yards (which would be weird, considering that's in field goal range). Keep fair catch rules the same for the return team. I just think that'd make a boring old punt more exciting to watch, since now the receiving team can't just run away from it.

- Players and their contracts.
Am I the only one who sees how monumentally stupid it is that players sign contracts, then can suddenly just up and refuse to play unless they get paid more? This is like, if you hire a contractor to work on your roof, then halfway through, they stop and demand more money or they won't finish your roof. No. Players should have to honor the contracts they sign or face expulsion from the league. In my opinion. If they don't like the money, don't sign the contract.

Those are the top two things I'd change if I could. How about you?

Right, but I just think it's stupid that they sign contracts, then can just decide to not honor their contract. That's pretty illegal anywhere else in the business world.

The ability of a strike?? LOL! Sorry, being selfish this morning....

I like what you said about the contracts, that is a legal document! I would change false starts, they slow the game down. Holding is a rule that is taken too far, no bear hugs or grabbing under the pads, but otherwise holding slows the game down too. Those are two penalties that are called way too often.

Another thing I think they should change is the helmet-to-helmet collisions, but not how you think.

Think about it. The NFL banned the ability of a defensive player to lower his head to make contact with a ball carrier helmet-to-helmet...

... but the ball carrier can still lower his head to make contact with a defensive player helmet-to-helmet. And many of them do.

Just saying. If they're going to ban head-on collisions, call it on offensive players, too.

You make a very valid point!

Also, refs need to start calling pass interference on offensive players more often. It's getting just laughable what the receivers can do downfield when it's a contested pass.

Eliminate penalties on Horse Collar tackles or remodel the shoulder pads so they aren't so easy to grab from behind.

If you are going to call face mask penalties then you need to eliminate the straight arm which offensive ball carriers take advantage of. They are allowed to put their hand into the defensive players face mask and some players even grab hold. Whereas a defensive players hand can brush against the face mask of an offensive player and its a 15 yard penalty.

I think it is already legal to grab a persons hair to make a tackle, if not, it should be.

If you refuse to play then the team can refuse you that weekly pay check. One thing that should be eliminated is for any team to use " Signing Bonuses", this is the money that can never be taken back to the team if the player is a dud, and if there is a signing bonus then make it so that it cannot be collected till 3/4 of the length of the contract is fulfilled. This is something that is included for the benefit of the agent who will want his percentage cut up front. By the way eliminate agents from the CBA's if there ever is a CBA again.

Do not allow players to play with broken bones, huge club casts on broken hands.

Green Cement or a rock garden why not just tear up the lawn and make it into something useful like a vegetable garden or fruit or nut trees.

The only time a pass interference call should be called is if either DB or WR infringes on the persons ability to make the catch. I have seen to many pass interference calls made when a DB barely touched the WR. I think any player that makes the gesture of throwing a flag should have a 5 yard penalty assessed towards them, or players that do exaggerated flopping should be called for bad acting.

I think that running into the punter should be allowed as long as it is not below the waist.
