NFL  > New York Giants  > Bye Bye Burress
December 29, 2008, 10:11 PM
I agree with releasing Burress, unfortunately his antics this year are going to cost the G-Men the Superbowl and a chance to repeat. I have been a crazed Giants fan since I was able to understand most of the game of football. Giants fans run through my family for generations, so just know I am not some idiot blogger with an agenda like a moronic Cowboys fan. I was at the Carolina game last week and Eli is doing well without Burress, but once playoff time rolls around he is going to be sorely missed and the Giants need to make it priority number one to get a big physical receiver in the offseason. Eli should be commended this season for making due with this platoon of receivers. I hope I am wrong, I really do, but in my opinion I think Plaxico blew the season just like he almost blew off his kneecap. Thanks Plax..see ya in 2 years on the Oakland Raiders.

You're right. Plax screwed it up, but just like when Tiki left and then Shockey got injured before the playoffs last year, the Jints seem to do better when there's no drama or selfishness to deal with in the locker room. The problem with losing Plax is that the defensive coordinators are able to stack the box since they don't have to worry about the deep threat, but Jacobs is doing a pretty good job of softening up the middle and Ward is doing a great job of running through it. Have faith. Go Jints!

Unfortunately, your analysis is more like a UNDERCOVER jets fan as opposed to being a giants fan generations removed. If you KNOW this team like you THINK you do, you should know that the likelyhood is moreso that plax WILL be back with the Gmen next season as opposed to not. First of all, we all know plaxico has been a BRAT within the confines of giants stadium. And what happened at the LQ was idiotic. But lets STOP beliving all of the newpapers & get back to using simple common sense. What schwartz & these other writers put in the paper is informative, but NOT gospel. Burress is not a THUG, he's a nitwit. don't lump what he does within the team with what happened at lq. They are SEPERATE issues, and what he was doing at giants stadium was not CRIMINAL, just really IMMATURE. he's not pacman or vick. Also keep in mind the PROBLEM children the giants delt with in the RECENT past. An (kerry collins) alleged racist, gambling drunk!. A man (christian peter) not once, but twice being accused of sexual misconduct while in college. A (keith hamilton) big time weed smoker & his (tito wooten) cohort who also beat his wife down multiple times in their hotel. The giants DIDN'T cut any of these guys out right for these incidents. What they did, & this is what seperate the giants from most every other team in the nfl. they WORKED with them & helped rehabilatate them. THATS what the new york Football giants do. And none of those guys helped the gmen win a superbowl. So while plaxico WILL be on a VERY short leash next season no doubt. DON'T throw him into the hudson just yet. Thats truly not the giants way of doing things. These same scribes you're taking as gospel now are the same ones who'll be trumpeting #17's return to the team next season, & YOU won't even REMEMBER what they were writing just six months earlier, quoting them at that point as to once again, how right they are. One last thing. Keep in mind that Amani toomer is in the last year of his contract & he's 34 years old. Still think they're dumping plax with NO number one wr on the roster to take his place?.

Hey big burtha, your conjecture is as likely as all the other prognosticators. Me think you have had too much of the kool aid. While I think you are correct that they will not just dump Plax, my concern is that he might just end up going to jail. He carried a gun in NYC illegally; this is a real hot button topic. Look at how aggressively the police were forced into action against the hospital that treated plax. I have a bad feeling they are going to make an example out of him. I was screaming before the season for the Giants to give him the big contract, because even though he was a pida, he was performing, and making Eli look good. I do not feel that he is in the same category as TO who is clearly a cancer in the club house. (I certainly could be wrong, but that is not the impression I get) and I agree he is not a Vick or a Pacman, however if he goes to jail, he will have a negative impact on our cap. Our defense has been 70% of our success and the o-line w/ our three backs 29% of the rest. My point is we are not winning games based upon Eli???s down field passing. They work that into games because of the other two parts mentioned work so well. Just because we have nobody as skilled and physical as Plax, does not mean he will stay.

I think the Mayor and the Police and the District Attorney might think otherwise.

As a die-hard Steeler fan, I knew Plax was trouble the day we drafted him. I thought he was lazy and not a team player when he skipped spring workouts...dumber than a bag of rocks when he spiked a pass on the 40yd line thinking he was still a Michigan Spartan and I was glad we got rid of him because he could've been the same stigma (I don't like to use the word cancer because that's disrespectful for those who are unfortunate to have that horrible disease) in our locker room when he cried after the AFC Championship game that he wasn't getting the ball thrown to him enough. MIND YOU HE DROPPED A TD PASS THAT WOULD'VE WON THE GAME FOR US LATE IN THE 4TH QTR.
Anyway, 1.) he may go to jail and I wouldn't feel bad for him. Why would ANYBODY, let alone a professional athlete, go to a club that one would need a loaded pistol for protection? 2.) The G-Men would be better off if they traded Plax to Dallas or Oakland....he'd fit in quite well in those locker rooms. 3.) The Giants have a very good defense, punishing running game as a result of their superior O-Line and Eli won't make the mistakes that will cost you a playoff game.
I think the Giants are a huge favorite for the chance to repeat this year, but if it's vs. the Steelers you know who I'm rooting for.
Good luck Giant fans....see ya in Tampa!

YOU might be right my friend, but look at the stats, in the year 2008, 969 people were CHARGED with the same exact crime that plax has been charged with. of those 969, 446 ended up with community service & NO jail time. of the rest who did time. ALL had priors or had existing warrants. Plus lump in the fact that by the time plax goes to court, EVERYBODY will be talking yankees, mets. It'll be a blip on the radar, trust me. He has no priors. The likely hood, he'll get maybe 1100 hrs of com service & then it's a wrap. JUST watch.

January 5, 2009  01:48 PM ET

Sleazberg is too busy AMENDING laws to benefit himself, by the time plax goes to court (mar 31st) he'll probaly be at his mansion in bermuda sipping on mai tai's thinking about how he HIMSELF has just successfully screwed the system. He likely won't even remember who plaxico is....LOL

You guys are crazy. Yes they can win without Burress but the wins they get are HARD fought. Burress frees EVERYTHING up. Come on. Every team needs a difference maker in their receiving core and without Burress the G-Men don't have it. The last 4 games speak volumes to how things will be without a star receiver(Not counting the Vikings game of course). So since we all know a Burress type receiver is needed what do you guys suggest??

Trade our #1 and the saints #2 and #5 draft pick, skip ahead of the line and go for Crabtree. The guy is a beast.

January 16, 2009  12:15 PM ET

Plax will prob be back. The giants need to get strict with him first and send him to a bootcamp before sending him on the field.

January 17, 2009  03:07 PM ET

THe way the Giants offense sputtered only helps Plaxico out... Had they played well then I would think he would definately have been gone with all the stuff he pulls... but they need that big WR who Eli can toss it up to... they have good young WRs in Smith, Hixon, maybe Manningham after he gets some time, but they need that big guy... hey could always replace him with kenny britt in the draft and use the money elsewhere! ;-)

No i say that the GIANTS should look to win now we have a good team in place i say trade your #1 pick and two #2 and get ANDRE JOHNSON form HOUSTON we cant wait for a rookie to get with our system it will help ELI out a whole lot with our running game to have a player like JOHNSON that's what i would do if i was the GM

January 21, 2009  02:25 PM ET

yeah andre would be the best possible reciever we could get. but it looks like were gonna get Boldin from the cards, which is still a great pick-up. as long as we get someone eli can look to in place of plax, well be fine next year. thats why eli looked so scared in the playoffs, every great qb had a great reciever, eli had plax, but he was gone...here comes the eli - boldin combo

Plax will be back by week 5, he'll get fined and probation, no jail time, then have an NFL suspension. By the time the Gmen get rolling, Plax will be ready to roll!
