I am currently talking 32 teams in 32 days...starting with the Carolina Panthers

32nd in total points averaging only 12.2 ppg, 32nd in total yards averaging 258, 32nd in passing with a dismal 143 yards per game. Dreadful doesn't even begin to describe the offense led by Jimmy Clausen and Matt Moore, so what does Carolina do, draft Cam Newton with the #1 overall pick in the 2011 draft. In '08 and '09 the Panthers put the ball to the ground for more than 2,000 collective yards finishing 12-4 in '08 and 8-8 in '09. Those days seem like light years away considering they only produced 16 offensive touchdowns in 2011.

Cam Newton adds another dimension to the offense, but his inexperience doesn't bode well in such a competitive division like the NFC South. And many questions surround the offense. Is Steve Smith on his way out? That would mean Newton's number one receiver is 2nd year player David Gettis, who did a nice job last year, with Brandon LaFell as the potential number two guy who will be a good NFL player. Newton does not have veteran leadership from an experienced quarterback and he has a new head coach in Ron Rivera who was the defensive coordinator in San Diego. I don't see Rivera influencing the offensive side of the ball. Cam Newton adds a ???playmaking??? factor to the offense, but we all know Carolina is successful when their running game is good. If DeAngelo Williams can bounce back to his healthy form of '09 and Jonathan Stewart and Mike Goodson can be productive situational backs Carolina can win games. Their defense wasn't great in '10, but it wasn't the worst and Rivera will certainly help to improve those weaknesses.

To say 2011 is a rebuilding season is quite the understatement. Carolina CAN win more than 2 games if they score more than 12 points a game in 2011. 12 ppg is simply unacceptable, that's just 4 field goals from the opposing team. They must get to the endzone more than 16 times. Cam Newton's big play ability will help generate more offensive production alone. However, when you have to play Tampa Bay, New Orleans and Atlanta twice there's not a lot of room for miscalculations outside the division. Cam Newton will struggle behind the weakest O-Line in the division, he'll struggle against the hype of what he's ???supposed??? to be as a #1 overall draft pick and he'll struggle without a lot of all-around help. But I still see Carolina winning 5 games because no team can go from perennial playoff threat to infinitely awful. And if they do happen to be as bad as '10 or worse, at least Cam Newton will sell some tickets.
