NFL  > Denver Broncos  > Is it time?
December 30, 2008, 08:58 AM
Folks,

I've been a Broncos fan for over 30 years now. I hate to be the one to ask the question, but is it time to move on? When we look at the changes needed in the Broncos - and changes are definitely needed - at what point do we need to start looking at the Head Coach?

Three seasons without a playoff appearance... A host of coordinators and coaches fired and dismissed... A defense that has gone from bad to worse. My sense is that Mike's coaching has gone stale. When do we need to let go of his legacy and what has happened in the past, and start looking towards the future?

The "Mastermind" of the '90s ain't a mastermind anymore... The Broncos need innovation and energy. I think it's time we look very hard at the team, and consider making some needed changes at the top...

What it really boils down to is Bowlen stepping up as the owner, to stop being in DENIAL, stop acting like he can't disagree with Shanahan and hire a REAL DEFENSIVE coordinator. I believe Shanahan is still a good coach....Offensively, but as a GM he's made horrible choices in building this defense. We nissed out on good players in the draft as well as free agency. I've been a bronco fan for more than 20yrs and it's just embarrassing watching this defense everytime they step on the field. Hopefully this HISTORICAL collapse with open Open both Bowlen and Shanahan's eyes to hire a top notch coordinator to Rebuild this defense from FRONT TO BACK.

His firing was long in coming! He was living off of Elway's unbelievable Arm,, Cutler. Cutler should be roasted like Shanny got it. He had players open all the time, but he keeps locking onto one or two players. That will work in college, not in the NFL Jay! Sir Drops alot <Bmarsh> needs to quit trying to dance sideways and go up field. He would have had more yards at lest 2 yards for each catch he wasn't trying to promote himself with dancin with the starts. His ego got the best of him. So has Cutlers. Nate needs to go to, he could cover a person with a blankett. Mike has lost his judgement. He was and has been the best Offensive Minde ever!! But his defensive skills, are pathetic. See ya mike, and I do hope you don't haunt us too much.

Bill Cowher went three consecutive years, 1998 through 2000, without a playoff appearance in the midst of his commendable coaching run with the Pittsburgh Steelers. He then led the Steelers to the playoffs in four of the next five seasons, winning the Super Bowl in the 2005 season.

Tennessee's Jeff Fisher had a three-year postseason skid from 2004-06, then went to the playoffs last year and has the AFC's No. 1 seed.

The Chargers, even without Merriman, have sacked Shanahan!

Guess I was right!

I think it was time for Mike Shanahan to move on and for the Broncos to get a new GM and a new coach--2 separate people. Tuesday AM when there had been 3 NFL coaches fired in Cleveland, New York Jets and Detroit, it crossed my mind that I'd like to see another one gone. Mike Shanahan has had so many years, quarterbacks, opportunities, draft picks to make things better. Many coaches get 3 -4 years, but it just went on and on with Mike. Lots of times I think owners are too quick to blame the coaches, but not in this case. When I saw the news that Shanahan was fired, it made my day. Thanks to Pat Bowlen. It was time. I was beginning to think that Pat Bowlen was so enthralled with Mike Shanahan that Bronco fans would have to endure Shanahan till he wanted to retire.

There will be no GM according to Pat Bowlen's press conference. He has no list of coaching candidates at the present time. The offensive coaches will be kept, at least attempt to, but an overhaul of the defensive coaches and philosophy are expected.

Spangoula seems to come to mind now after one day of shock and awe

The only people on defense I can see Denver keeping are Champ Bailey, DJ Williams, Elvis Dumerville, and Marcus Thomas. Everyone else should be looking over their shoulders. Woodyard will have an opportunity as well as Jarvis Moss and Tim Crowder. Now the fans of Orange and Blue will have to wait and see.

With all that has happened over the past few years, there had to be a change. There was too much regression on the defensive side of the ball and we were no longer a solid team in that aspect. All those years of poor drafting and free agent singings were the key factor in the firing. I hope that we find a solid coach and a solid GM to build the team the right way.
