Would Sports Illustrated put in the same time and effort to investigate and report the "great" things Tressel did for OSU, Columbus, Ohio, and all the people who he taught and coached ? No, only dirt sells magazines. I'll never pick up another issue after reading your magazine for 40 years.

Ya know, Nixon wasn't such a bad President, either -- look at all the terrific foreign policy breakthroughs he had.

Jeez.

The latter interpretation is suggested by a story that has long circulated among college coaches and was confirmed to SI by a former colleague of Tressel's from Earle Bruce's staff at Ohio State in the mid-1980s. One of Tressel's duties then was to organize and run the Buckeyes' summer camp. Most of the young players who attended it would never play college football, but a few were top prospects whom Ohio State was recruiting. At the end of camp, attendees bought tickets to a raffle with prizes such as cleats and a jersey. According to his fellow assistant, Tressel rigged the raffle so that the elite prospects won -- a potential violation of NCAA rules. Says the former colleague, who asked not to be identified because he still has ties to the Ohio State community, "In the morning he would read the Bible with another coach. Then, in the afternoon, he would go out and cheat kids who had probably saved up money from mowing lawns to buy those raffle tickets. That's Jim Tressel."

Bet SI goes bankrupt now that BigRG has quit reading them.....

June 1, 2011  12:28 PM ET

I heard Ted Bundy helped a neighbor by cutting their grass for them because they were diabled... and he DIDN'T kill them....

Man, was he a good samaritan or what??

(I know, I know. No, I'm not saying Tressell is as bad as Bundy. I'm just saying, you're not going to get puff pieces talking about how good someone is because their bad stuff outweighs it).

If you spit, then no, you can't oogle. If you don't spit, then oogle as long as the oogle lasts.

I don't recall SI holding a gun to Tressel's head, saying "do something bad or we're gonna shoot your dog".

The man actively participated in a coverup involving the NCAA. He lied to his bosses. He lied to the NCAA.

And he did while pimping his books on what a man of integrity/character he is.

THAT is Jim Tressel.

If you are an OSU fan, you should be outraged that Tressel passed himself off as something his is not. He carefully crafted an image that he did not live up to, all for what, his own personal enrichment? Yes, I am sure that he -- along with Ted Bundy and Josef Stalin -- all contributed something positive to society during their lifetime. But when it came time to practice what he preached (and got paid to preach at that), Tressel was an epic failure. There is a reason he will never walk the sidelines of college football again.
