QUOTE:
Cormier is set to face Bigfoot Silva September 10th in the semi's. Overeem has an "injured" toe.Earlier in the day Overeem said he was not fighting September 10th and he has one fight left on his contract. So is the injury legit or is he renegotiating a new contract and SF could not wait for that to be resolved? September 10th is a locked in date. Also, who do you guys have winning this now?
Actually, he said in an interview that he was not fighting in September and that he'd be fighting in October for Strikeforce or for another organization. It didn't matter where.
But he said he wasn't going to be rushed to fight. He's the champion and no one asked him if September was good for him. He said he had a hurt toe against Werdum and he wants it to heal. So he's fighting in October.
Then Strikeforce officials said he has to fight or he may be removed from the Grand Prix. He then said he doesn't like being threatened, and if that's what they want, then go ahead.
Looks like they did. Lol!
"Stikeforce has requested me to accept the fight for Sept. 10, to agree on that, but I have not agreed on it and I also had some emails, some questions asked, is the fight confirmed? No, the fight is not confirmed. I do not confirm it and I will not confirm it."
"What's going to happen next, I don't know. I've had some threats of cutting me out of the tournament if I don't participate. I don't know if they're going to do it. Personally, I don't like to be threatened. If people start talking like that then... be my guest, but then I'm really not going to sing to their tune."
"For them to unilaterally declare, okay, [September 10] is going to be the second round, which I never agreed on, and then threaten me if I don't want it, it...doesn't really show a lot of respect," Overeem said. "The fights that I've lost -- I'm not the guy going for excuses -- I blame myself. That is where this decision is coming from. I don't want to blame myself. ...What I do now is I [do] my homework, I make sure everything is perfect, and then I fight. With that formula I've had some great results in the last four years, and I'm not prepared to throw that all away because people pressure me."
"The thing is, there's other promotions. There's other stuff I can do. K-1's going to come back. There's some good reports on that. There's some other promotions in the world that would love to have me fight. So for me, the respect thing is definitely a factor and it's definitely important... I'm a fighter who likes to fight. I love to be very active. I'm going to fight [in] October regardless. If it's not going to be for Strikeforce, then I'll fight somewhere else."
Then Dana White came out and said:
"Sept. 10 was the date Showtime wants us to go, so it's the date we've got to go. It's unfortunate that Alistair is unavailable, but situations like this are why there are alternates in the tournament."
"Overeem is under contract, and when his pinky toe heals up, we'll get him another fight."
So who really knows? I'm guessing Overeem was being a diva about his toe injury and was trying to get leverage for more pay or better contract.

I think its a big blow to the GP losing him and Barnett is the clear cut favorite now.
QUOTE(#6):
And who's he supposed to fight in october now?
This.
They should just make the GP a #1 contender tournament now and just have whoever wins fight Overreem for the belt. Agreed Barnett is the favorite now.

I agree!
I never knew that Overreem was such a pre-madonna. Dont you think that he would like to get the last fight on his contract over so he can negotiate a new contract in the UFC?

He probably tried to use his last fight to leverage a better deal. "I'll fight this fight in September, but you give me a better deal" sort of thing.
QUOTE(#12):
I believe that was the goal anyway. I'm pretty sure that I remember hearing that the title was not/would not be on the line in any of AO's tournament fights...I like Bigfoot to win it.
Correct the his belt was not on the line in the tourny. The winner of it did not become the SF champ whether they beat him or not
I don't blame Overeem. What other MMA fighter, fights as much as him combined with bis K1 stuff?
He just fought in late June and will probably fight again in Oct whic is normal in MMA. Twice a year is all anyone in MMA fights anymore. Sometimes you will get an exception to the rule, but not many.

With guys who have belts it seems like we only see them once a year and are lucky if they fight twice

To me its less of an issue with what happened with Overeem than what Bones Jones pulled with Rashad. His injury is so bad he couldn't fight Rashad. Ok I am cool with that, but as soon as he wiggled out of that fight for an injury he agreed to fight Davis with the same injury... I call BS!!

Agreed, Jones was worse. I just want to see who Overeem is supposed to fight in october now
QUOTE(#18):
Jones ducked Rashad. Facts are facts.
