Its summertime, and most outdoors people are concentrating on fishing, maybe hiking and camping, but this topic is on hunting. Do any of you do any varmint hunting during the dog days of summer to sharpen you shooting eye for the fall? I like to go groundhog hunting. The target is small, and the distances can be quite challenging. I find varmint shooting great practice for larger game in the fall. Any thoughts on your favorite varmint to hunt, your favorite rifle or handgun and pet loads for the job.

Just now saw your post. I don't get to do much hunting these days.

But was always interested in varmint hunting. There are a bunch of prairie dogs in the panhandle. Just never got around to picking it up.

Varmint hunting is a ton of fun. usually you have a lot of small targets, (especially Prairie dogs, which I would love to hunt) no or very generous bag limits, and a lot of shooting at all distances. If you can pick off small targets like this groundhog at 200-300 yds, a deer at 100 yds becomes easier.

Mostly cull, they are ok to eat, I save them if someone wants them, otherwise just helping out the farmer.

I didn't even see this post until just now. I absolutely love varmint hunting. I mainly use a Marlin 22N with a Simmons scope on it. When I was younger, my mom used to pay me $20 for every groundhog, possum, or raccoon I could take out from our back porch. I was out there almost every night trying to make some money haha

Damn $20.00, I would have lived on the porch.
