He has failed the team in many ways, but to be fair, Tannenbaum couldn't trade Pennington out of the division. He didn't have time. Favre came on with around a month of training camp left, not in true football shape. The Jets had to make cap room to pick up Favre, room they could only get by cutting Chad. Any attempt to trade him out of the division would have taken time, shaving even more time off of Brett's preseason.
That said, the Favre experiment was a debacle, at least partially foisted upon Mangini. Even so, a past-defensive coordinator allowing Sutton to "coordinate" our way right out of the playoffs is nigh-unforgivable. I'd have canned Schotty and Sutton and kept Eric, but I can live with it if we manage to secure another young, intelligent coordinator like Ryan or, failing that, Spagnuolo.
(Also, Pete Carroll was an abysmal NFL coach, no matter his current college success. Kotite was pathetic, but Carroll didn't and doesn't belong in the NFL. He has admitted as much in interviews.)
no it was the play calling that failed. the 2 best defenses in the nfl are running 3-4s. the problem is with the formation its with the system that we run using the formation. One of the great strengths of a 3-4 is the ability to disguise blitzes. Sutton hardly ever brought any pressure the second half of the season and the blitz packages he did bring were obvious and weak. Kerry Rhodes, a strong, dynamic SS, was hardly ever brought down to the line of scrimage. Even Revis is a great candidate to blitz but that never happened. Sutton must go. Furthermore we ahve spent the last 3 years bringing in the right personal for the system and to make an attempt to go back we be just plain stupid. Love youo spags but Ryan is our man and he should bring Keith Butler in to be his D coordinator. He'd help along the progress of Gholston too.
No, it's the personal we had running the 3-4....Gholston??? What a joke. Do u realize how difficult it is to change from a DE to a OLB in the 3-4, playing in space, a complete role. Who else? No proper DE's, Jenkins was solid, Harris was solid, and whats his name from UAB was mediocre. No true pass rushing OLB which is what the 3-4 demands
The initial mistake was Mangini trying to force the 4-3 personnel he inherited into a 3-4 right away. The best thing Rex Ryan has said so far is that he believes in adjusting the personnel to the system, not the other way around. That is also the Bellechick-Parcells credo that has worked so well. Vilma was a great sideline-to-sideline tackler as MLB but undersized in the 3-4. Robertson was a credible and developing 4-3 tackle who was way too small to play the nose. That made them ineffectual on the field and destroyed any trade value for both of them. That inflexibility cost us two years of rebuilding on defense.
You think that this will happen in denver with McD too? Similar coaches... Thing is, it can't get any worse, so who cares..... Coachs love to implement their own system despite looking where the talent is... So hopefully Ryan does that.. MartyMan, you can have Robertson back, he was a bust for us:)
