I think that the pats will keep Cassel if Brady dosn't return next year. I think that they might make an effort to trade him if he dose comeback but he could still be a good backup. Also it would be nice for the pats to be able to feel safe that if Brady is getting banged around in a game that he could come out for a quarter. He could make the pats like the steelers.
Patriots cannot afford to maintain both players unless Cassel is put under contract without tagging him.
Only the Patriots know what they can and cannot afford. They can not afford to just let him go to free agency. He has too much value and will be better off keeping to be used for trade bargaining and also insurance.
