I pretty much agree with that assessment. I think for 2011 this deal helps the team a lot. Jackson immediately improves the rotation. The bullpen is much better with Dotel, K-Mac and the lefty joining it........and Miller is not part of it.
Long term, though, I think you are right. If Colby reaches his potential and becomes a star in Toronto, we may regret this deal long term. I would have preferred to see Colby moved for an impact player that would be with us for a couple of years at least.
I guess Mozeliak is going for it now, in case we don't have Albert in future years. Also with Colby coming up on arbitration, it sounds like they weren't sure about trying to sign him to a deal if he is disgruntled about being in St. Louis.

On the surface it looks like the Birds got the raw end of this deal. I've heard (read) rumors that the Birds may look to resign Jackson at the end of the season, which could help the rotation next year if they don't pick up Carpenter's option.
Rzepczynski is just the lefty we need right now, and is under team control until 2016. He has held opposing lefties to a .159 average, .247 on-base percentage and .203 slugging percentage this year.
Dotel can get some strikeouts at the back end of the pen, and could split time closing with K-Mac, and Salas.
Patterson is the wild card for me. His numbers this year are comparable to what Rasmus' are this season. He provides a better defensive option when Jay needs a break in CF. He can steal a base or two, and he's a veteran presence in the clubhouse.
Lost in this, is the [up to] 3 PTBNL. This could potentially work out to be a good deal for the Cardinals in the future.

Rzepczynski was the one impressive thing that I saw tonight. He was real solid for two innings. Dotel looked alright, but was only in for the ninth when we were behind by 2. The offence looked **** it was going to show up in the fist few innings, but was gone by the fourth.
Winning only two of four at home against the terrible Astros isn't going to get it done. That is what killed this team last August, the ability to beat the bad teams. That needs to turn around if they are going to win this thing.
I agree about Rzepcynski. He was solid, and he is going to give us a good bullpen lefty for a few years, hopefully.

Rzepcynski looked good and MacClellen does well against lefties, but I would be alot more comfortable with one more south paw in the bullpen.
I am beginning to think that Houston has some kind of wiered MoJo on the Cardinals. Why is it that this team can be absolutely terible except when they play St. Louis? When ever they play us they play like a contender, and we shut down. I don't get it, Like Norris, who is an average hurler at best, except when he plays the Cards. We make the guy look like an ace.
I don't think the Cardinals got enough for Rasmus, personally. He's 24 and could still well blossom into superstar status. They could be left with almost nothing to show for this if Colby is an All-star for the next decade.
