NFL  > Atlanta Falcons  > Who do they draft?
January 4, 2009, 03:53 PM
They need to start on defense no doubt. Lawyer is getting old quick. Boley and Brooking should be gone after this season. We lack a Defensive Tackle that can push him back. Basically just another pass rusher, which is essential cuz we cant blitz and sacrifice coverage cuz they suck. We seemed to be set on offense almost. It would be nice if we could get a running back to compliment Mike Turner cuz if he gets as many carries next year as he got this year he will be dead quite soon unless they wake up and give Jerious Norwood more carries (which they should cuz hes explosive). Also a pass catching Tight End like Brandon Pettigrew. A new center or another tackle. I think we can piece together a solid defense for next season and if we can get a Tight End I think our offense could be very very very tough to stop especially with Matty Ice with another year under his belt!

i agree maybe replace harvey dahl because he was one of the linemen that had about a 13 inch spread in the arizona game and gave up that fumble it wasnt mike turner or matt ryans falt. But nonew the less they need to work on a pass rushing defense just as you have already said. But Jerious norwood can be a whole lot better of a back if he got more experience in the games

The absolutely need to beef up that secondary. You can't always rely on OL's to allow a guy like John Abraham to get to quarterbacks (as evidenced in the Arizona game). The fact that Warner had a wide open shot to convert that 3rd and 16 play late in Saturday's game is just embarrassing. For some reason, Atlanta has historically had a Jello-like secondary. It's time for that to change.

January 8, 2009  12:24 AM ET

Even though I was devastated when they converted that 3rd and 16 play, you can't get too hung up on one mistake by our LB crew. Brooking has been in the league since 1998 and has shown us consistant play over the years, ever since #58 "the hammer" left. I do think it's time to draft his replacement though. I think Brook has a few years left in him, and it would be a great time to get someone out there under his wing. It was a shame to lose Demario Williams last year because I really thought he'd be that guy.

As far as secondary goes, I was actually glad to get rid of D. Hall..sure he's fast, but he never really impressed me as a cornerback. Jimmy Williams was a bust as well... has anyone even heard from him? haha.

While everyone thinks that our offense doesnt need help, I think it does a bit. Though I liked what I saw from Harry Douglas, he's not really a short/3rd down type WR. I think if we get a TE that can get Matty Ice another look on 3rd & 7 lets say, that would just complete our offense. I like the kid from the Sooners, Mr. Jermaine Gresham. He is 6'6'', 265 lbs., and a great athelete. If we can get our hands on him in the 1st round, I think that would be great.

As for the defense, I think we need to upgrade our CBs for sure. I like Chris Houston, but I think he is too small to bang around with a big WR. I think we need to give him help with a big CB, and I like the size of Utah State's Sean Smith. The kid is 6'2'', 212 lbs at CB. I think that can really help our DBs in covering a big WR like a Marques Colston type that we face twice each season, and it can also help our tackeling since he is a big body at a small position. He is projected as a 2nd rd pick, and I think it would be nice if we grab him there. Also, I'd love to see us get Victor "Macho" Harris out of VT (I'm a VT NCAAF fan lol). Check him out, you'll like him.

Also, I think we need to take care of the OLB positions. Michael Boley is horrible at run defense, and Brooking isn't great at pass defense. I like Curtis Lofton in the middle though.

And finally, I think we need to draft a SS. With Lawyer Milloy on his way out probably, we need to replace him with a tackeling SS more then a coverage SS. I just think that Lawyer was such an impact in the tackeling, we would miss it too much if we replace it with a cover SS.

I would also like them to beef up the O and D Lines, especially the O-Line. Now, I know they did a good job protecting Matty Ice and openning holes for MT33, but I doubt they can do the same again with the group we got. Now, I like the left side with Sam Baker and Justin Blalock at LT and LG respectively, and I like Todd McClure at C, but I think the right side of the O-Line needs work.

As for the D-Line, obviously resigning Jonathan Babineaux should be a priority, the kid is great with his speed against Guards and the Center. But with Grady Jackson likely on his way out, I think we need a true DT that can STOP the RUN! I like the combo of Jamaal Anderson (still hoping he is not a bust!), and ofcourse John Abraham (hopefuly he can start STEPPING UP in BIG GAMES one day!). I also really like Kroy Biermann, he is really an energy player, and so far, it's hard to say, but he has looked BETTER then Jammal Anderson. It's true.

That's preety much it. Go get 'em boys! The Dirty Birds are BACK!

Sorry for posting it twice lol.

I agree that the Falcon's offense isn't perfect, I'd rather see them focus on defense this off season. Another pass rusher to compliment Abraham (oh how I miss Patrick Kearney) would be my first stop. As for who? I won't speculate. I've disagreed with almost every decision Thomas Dimitrioff has made and been proven wrong each time so far. I'll just defer :)

Virgina Tech players haven't worked out all that well with the Falcons, if you don't remember....

haha

January 13, 2009  02:56 PM ET

Seriously though, The first pick needs to be either Taylor Mays from USC, he is a beast for a SS.
BJ Raji from BC, he's the next Grady Jackson. Or Michael Johnson from GT, 6'7" 270lbs. with 2 or 3 years under Abraham, unstoppable.
The great thing is, we don't have to worry, because whomever Dimitroff picks will be perfect, he is a GENIUS! All hail Thomas, savior of the Falcons.

January 13, 2009  03:45 PM ET

I'd love to see a Taylor Mays back there at SS. Of course, I agree that anyone Dimitroff pics will be awesome. So far, I haven't seen him make any personnel mistakes and you'd think a rookie GM would have at least one!

January 13, 2009  04:13 PM ET

Just found out that Mays is staying at USC for his senior season, oh well. Dimitroff will work his magic either way. And good for Mays.

January 13, 2009  04:53 PM ET

That's definitely cool for Mays.

I think the biggest question is, who will Dimitrioff pick up in free agency? After all, that will have a lot of impact on who gets drafted.

January 14, 2009  10:39 AM ET

In Free Agency, I hope they go for Nnamdi Asomugha from the Raiders. Said by all, he is the clear cut best shutdown CB in the game, and he's a FA. If the Falcons can get their hand on him, and play him with Chris Houston opposite side, and with Von Hutchins coming back, we can become one of the best pass defensive teams in the league.

Yeah, Mays is going back to school, so we can't draft him. Sucks I guess, but I agree with you guys, Dimitroff will make the right move. Also, he said he is really comfortable with drafting low in the 1st rd. since he always did with the Pats.

Lmao. Yeah man, how much I liked DeAngelo.....that **** lol.

January 14, 2009  02:09 PM ET

But is there even a chance that we get Nnamdi Asomugha. He is clearly the best but I know how commited the management is to building this team in the draft but there is no way you can go wrong with this pick. I dont think it will happen but if it does how scary we could be. I absouletly love Taylor Mays but its to bad hes not coming out. If anyone has heard anything on Nnamdi let me know cuz that would be huge. We should get Nnamdi and pick up Pettigrew in the draft, adn then devote the rest of our pics to solid defensive players, and maybe a backup running back cuz Turner is gonna die soon at this pace and we dont use the gamebreaker of all gamebreakers in Jerious Norwood. The future is bright but I hope Ryan doesnt degress even though it doesnt look likely, it still is a very good possibility he could. PRAY TO GOD HE GETS BETTER LIKE EVERYONE THINKS HE WILL.

January 14, 2009  02:13 PM ET

Is Nnamdi a reasonable expectatioon. Cuz if we got him along side a couple more defensive rookies and the core we have now it could be scary. We need to pick up Pettigrew in the draft and get Nnamdi. Has anyone even heard anything about us picking Nnamdi up or is that just a dream at this point? I just hope to god Ryan doesnt take a step back next year cuz I know it happens quite a bit to rookies, he looked so good this year I hope he can live up to the expectations of what he needs to perform next year. Hes a stud and I just hope he can get better and better cuz if he does well have quite a few lombardi trophys by the time hes done here. We alos need a backup running back cuz mike turner will die at the pace hes at now cuz we dont seem to want to give Jerious Norwood any carrries even though he is one of the best number 2 running backs in the league and is the defintion of explosive. The offseason will be fine but i just hope we take a chance on Nnamdi cuz i know how commited the staff is to build this team in the draft. PRAY!

January 14, 2009  02:14 PM ET

i didnt know the iother one sent so i typed it again...shi# well lmk guys!

January 14, 2009  03:02 PM ET

Yes, I read on AtlantaFalcons.com from one of the team insiders that the Falcons organization told him they can be factors with ALL the FA's out there this season, which means Nnamdi is in the mix. He said the main thing for Dimitroff is the players they want have to fit their system. So yes, there is a possiblity that we can land Nnamdi, but also don't forget the Raiders can franchise him for one more season. But I sure do hope we can get our hands on him, teams don't even throw his way anymore. He's amazing.

January 14, 2009  03:04 PM ET

An insider of the team from the Falcons website stated that the organization told him they can be on any free agent this season, so yes, Nnamdi is an option. Also, he said it's not about the money really, it's more about if Dimitroff and Coach Smith think that percticular player fits their system. But also don't forget the Raiders can slap the franchise tag on Nanmdi if they can't resign him.
