Agreed. Who even thinks about the manager's number? I'm a big Phillies fan and also a big Charlie Manuel fan, and I have no freakin' idea what his number is!!

(come to think of it, what other team sport makes the manager/coach wear a uniform like the players?).
Bob Greene's column on cnn.com today (10/23/11) addresses this very question!
Yankee numbers soon to be retired: #2 (Jeter), #42 (Rivera, although once he retires it would not have been reassigned anyway).
Unassigned numbers that are possibly under consideration: #51 (Williams), #21 (O'Neill), #6 (Torre).
The honor is becoming a bit unwieldy. The standard for this honor should remain very high, especially for the Yankees. As great a manager as Joe Torre was for the Yankees, I would suggest a plaque instead. Same goes for the greats Williams and O'Neill.
QUOTE(#4):
The greatest Yankee to wear #6 was Mickey Mantle.
Correct; in his rookie year!
Personally, I'll always think of #6 as Roy White's number.
