NFL  > Oakland Raiders  > Al Davis Ruins the Oakland Raiders...
January 7, 2009, 12:14 PM
The Raiders Al Davis made an impact as owner of the Raiders. But did Al Davis ruin the Oakland Raiders. Because of some of the coaches he has hired. Such as Lane Kiffin or Art Shell. They haven't had a good coach since Jon Gruden in 2002.

The jury is out on whether or not Lane would have been a good coach. If he had been allowed to make his own decisions, such as putting together his own D staff and not drafting JR then who knows? He certainly impressed me far more than Shell. I think the bottom line is that it won't be easy to tell who are the good coaches as long as Al is ruining things.

I will repeat this info

1966 thry 1985 one the best teams ever, the numbers are staggering, but that was 23 years ago.

Last 23
11 Losing seasons
8 seasons with more than 10 losses, current streak of 6 (11 loss Seasons) League record
5 (8-8) seasons
2 (9-7) seasons

That is 16 out of 23 seasons they failed to win more than they lost. Add (2) 9-7 years and that is 18 out of 23 they stunk.

No playoffs in those 18 seasons.

5 seasons with 10 win or more

Playoff Games last 23 Years; 12, that's right twelve, 12

Playoff Wins: 6
Playoff Losses: 6

3- AFC Championship games (in 2 they only managed a field goal, you spend the entire season trying to get to this game and you put up is a field goal)

Lost to Buffalo 51-3
Lost to Baltimore 16-3 in Oakland
Won against Tenn. 41-21

The only Superbowl they were they were losing by 31 points in the 3rd quarter, eventally losing by 28.

When Al Davis says they will get back to winning ways, he can't possibly think the last 23 years were winning, oh wait we are talking about the biggest nutjob on the planet.

I have always loved the Raiders ,but I have been sick to my stomach watching Al turn our beloved Raiders into a side show. After moving back from LA things were ok after Gruden took over .He mixed the young and the old together and there was a great sense of pride on this team, then AL did not have anymore court cases pending so he set out to destroy the team part by part.If he is such a football genius how did he let this team get old so fast and chase away a pretty good coach and staff. The last 5 years have been painful to say the least. Please sell this team to someone who knows how to get things done and delegate power to people who know what they are doing.I don't think Al knows a salary cap from a snow cap and that will come back to bite the Raiders in the near future. The nfl is now big business and should be handled as such. Thanks for the great memories Al ,but the time has come for you to step aside and let the Raiders return to the greatness we all know they can achieve with a few tweeks here and there.LONG LIVE "THE RAIDER NATION"

Sell the Team so the Radier will be back to kick their opponent even when they are hurt and lying on the ground. OLD Skool Football.

January 7, 2009  11:54 PM ET

as al's health fades more and more each year you see it is time for him to let his icy grip from the raiders be released. i think of al and george steinbrenner as similer in some asspects. first they share the same birthday july 4th al is a year older, second they are the face of their respected franchies for numbous years, they have both had a history of meddling and being in lawsuits with their leagues. the one recent difference is that george stepped down and let his sons run the team. al needs to do the same. i think it is a sign that he missed his first road game since 1979! he will be 80 years old at the start of the season. i know thease days 80 is not that old, but al has the all the wears and years of oppistion taking his toll on him making him look 100 instead of 80! you will be remembered as a great football man, and you are all ready in the hall of fame! it is time to save the raiders by getting a football minded gm to rebuild, please the league needs the raiders to be feared instead of laughed at!

January 11, 2009  07:35 PM ET

It's a legendary team, and Al is responsible for a lot of that.

People **** about Al, but I'm glad he got rid of Kiffin. His play calling lacked imagination, with the exception of that 77 yard field goal attempt.

January 24, 2009  11:35 PM ET

Okay look,
Kiffin like others was never given full rains of his team and that 77 yard field goal attempt was after he was being threatened to lose his job, it was kinda like a FU to Al.
But!
As Raider fans we need to focus on the positive, we finish are season strong. In beating a team we had never beat before(Texans) and being responsible for the firing of the man who rapped us in are only superbowl appearance since 1983.
We have the player we just need a loeader with some F***** brains.

January 25, 2009  06:14 AM ET

its his team and he can run it however he sees fit...although their putrid

So what is the Lions Problem ? Matt Millen ? Ownership?
Gruden is getting unemployment after the Raiders Pounded the Bucs at home the last game of the season. I know, they let the Raiders win.
Go pick on the Ringless Chargers! Or The Broncos and their new coach, that the players hate. Except the Bears old Q B.
ESPN reported that H.R. Kiffin Stuff had been screwing up in his new gig on campus. Remember?

Why would the jury be out if Kiffen was a bad coach or not? The thing about Al is he is always going to the bargain bin for a head coach. Now no main name out there will come to Oakland because Crazy Al is still in charge and can't make a good decision. Russell sucks and you know Al wanted him to throw the ball 60 yards on his knees. You know Al wanted Darius Heyward Bey because Russell could throw him the deep ball cuz Bey is fast. Wow speed doesn't do anything when you don't have the time to throw it and when you do throw it deep Bey can't catch anyway because he has the worst hands of any pro receiver. Throw in McFadden, who I like, can't stay healthy. The NFL is all about the draft and Al screws it up every year by looking at the 40 times and goes I will take the guy on the top of the list. Great. Keep up the good work Al Davis. When will the Raiders be better? When Al goes thats when.

Long live Al! Commitment to Flatulence!

Hammered, you're using the last six years of stats to skew stats since 1985. If the Raiders won the next four Superbowls, your pre-85 stats would still look much better than the last 10 because you would be including the six crappy years; but I don't think anyone would question that the Raiders are back in their winning ways.

Back out the last six years and the stats from 1986 through their most recent Superbowl year are pretty good. Not as good as 66-85, but neither were the stats for alot of the other teams that were good during the pre 1985 era. The Raiders were definitely in winning ways in the years leading up to their most recent Superbowl appearance. The last six years have been terrible, but the history prior to that is nothing to be embarrassed by. You don't need to go back to 1985 to find winning ways in Raider Nation.
