NFL  > Green Bay Packers  > Packers vs. Saints Post Game Grades (Packers)
September 9, 2011, 12:36 AM
My after-action review of the game. I'm a Lombardi student, so I grade VERY HARD!

Offensive play calling: B+ There were a few bizarre calls, one of which was why the QB sneak wasn't used on at least 1 occasion inside of the 20 with 1 yd to go.

O-line: B On a few occasions Rodgers had to run for his life. Though on at least 1 occasion, the back (Starks) failed to pick up his block.

RB's: B Got it done through out the game for the most part.

WR's: A Great game, and some spectacular catches! Greg Jennings was the man.

TE's: C Basically a non factor, but Finley made some plays.

QB: A+ Rodgers was deadly tonight
--------------------------------------------

Defensive play calling: I (incomplete), I can't say anything other than Dom Capers has a ton of work to do. I don't know if he was off tonight, or the players themselves were responsible for this farce!

D-line: D The only thing that saved them from an F was 2 stuffed plays. Ever hear of the word "TACKELING?"

LB's: D Same as above, but needs serious work in pass coverage!!!!!

Secondary/Safeties: F Completely non existent throughout the game!

Special Teams: F/A Same as above. Time to fire the coach, like last year already! Cobb get's an individual A+!! That was one of the greatest kick returns of all time in the NFL, no doubt about it! WOW, and a very nice TD catch/run to the end-zone too!

Kicking: B They showed up, and the punting game and the field goal kicking was good.

Over all grade: C-/C This team has issues on defense obviously. The secondary is in a shambles (thanx to Brees sticking it to them, I understand that), and needs work. The Packers can't tackle anyone, that's obvious, and they looked rusty on defense too. The linebackers looked lost at times, and like the D-line, need to hit the tackle drills hard this week.

I understand there were a few plays made on defense, but I'm grading an OVERALL approach to the game. A few plays made properly doesn't make up for the garbage OVERALL I saw tonight.

Right now they just have to win the games. Doesn;t matter how well they play as long as it ends with a W. THe playoffs are when they have to be on top of their game.

While I wasn't terribly impressed (at all) by the Packers D, we have to remember that this is the Saints offense they were dealing with. The Saints O looked good. Interested to see what this defense will do against some lesser offenses. Packers O looked solid, thats for sure!

I can agree, but this was waaay worse than advertised for a Dom Capers defense.

Ditto, and I did mention they looked rusty, but 420 yds passing for even Brees is a disaster! Not to mention the lack of tackling on run defense. YIKES!

Great game to watch as a season opener. Very entertaining.

Couldn't ask for much more....maybe more defense I suppose, but from a fans standpoint it was fun!

QUOTE(#9):

Both defenses need to look in the mirror and nowhere else, even though there were some high points. Both offenses are amazing, and Sean Payton made some poor decisions, hindsight being 20-20. 4th and inches, you're golden - if you make it. But when you don't it's a huge momentum swing - in GOD's house. And GB took that momentum and went to the house immediately thereafter. Clock management, too. And final play of the game, how do you take the ball out of Brees' hands after he has torched the Pack for 400+ yards? If Ingram scores, once again you're golden. But he didn't. And he's a rookie in his first NFL game. That P.I.call getting them there sure looked suspect in the one replay i saw.One more thing. I miss Darren Sproles already. Hated seeing that guy in a Saints jersey, but it's all about the $. That guy is a true X factor. Worth every penny he's paid. He's going to be all over the field all year long. Both teams had special teams failures, too. I saw that in SD all year long last year.Solid game by GB. Congratulations. That offense was a machine. Very impressive. All other teams in the NFL, notice has been served. Both of those teams are the real deal.

Defenses were getting ripped on the morning shows, and that was my point. Looking outside of the box (team performance, which is what I was grading) the game was an A+ for entertainment value.
