NFL  > Baltimore Ravens  > Extra Down not being talked about in TEN game...
January 10, 2009, 10:27 PM
In the divisional round game against Tennessee, everyone is talking about the play clock running out on the Ravens on the last drive but did anyone see the extra down Tennessee got on the drive that started on their one... After the first down play by Hall which Ray Lewis hit him hard on the sideline the next play Johnson goes for 7 yards to the 18. There is a 15 yard penalty on TEN O lineman after the play... the ref comes on mic and says the unsportsmanlike if after the play and the play counts penatly is half the distance... LOOK AT THE PLAY BY PLAY... they didn't count the play and gave them half the distance form the end of the run... IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SECOND DOWN!!! The lineman marks it a first down and no one says a word (they took three more plays to convert the first... I know the Ravens won and it didn't wind up hurting them in the end but I am amazed this isn't getting covered... this drive changed the whole game as the field position was completely changed.

I reread my post and it is incoherent. So my apologies... I am just trying to see if I understand the rules properly. Should the play have counted? By my estimations it should have. I suppose I am preparing myself for the onslaught of bitter Ravens haters saying the clock ran out on the Flacco throw to Heap and I'm just preparing my defense. Petty as it may be...

Since the penalty occurred AFTER play was complete--and since the result of the play was a first down--the refs got it right. They move the ball back--but it's still first down.

The refs got it right.

The penalty came AFTER the play was complete. The result of the play was a first down. Then there was a dead ball foul (unsportmanlike conduct). The result of the play--first down--stands, but the team gets backed up as a result of the penalty.

Nobody can take anything away from the Ravens. That was one helluva football game.
As was the Cardinals romp over the heavily favored Panthers. If I were a Panthers fan...I'd be pissed! I don't know what team showed up for Carolina last night, but it wasn't the Panthers from the regular season! What va humiliating way to end a pretty good season especially at home! But who am I to talk...the Buffalo Bills didn't do any better!

9:58 2nd Ten -- Ten-David Stewart PENALIZED -9 yards for Unnecessary Roughness
